Your teams best free agent signing

There's a thread about players being let go that fans want to have back. Reading it, I thought it could be interesting to see if fans of a team who picked up a player value him as much as the fans of the team who let the same player walk. For example: Sabres fans still start to cry when Briere is mentioned, he's the obvious guy who shouldn't have been let go, but do Flyers fans think he's their best signing (or are they stupid?) ;)

So: Who's your teams best free agent signing over the last years?

For the Sabres, I was about to say Ehrhoff (and he is mentioned by Canucks fans as the one they want back) but technically he was never free agent. His rights were aquired by the Sabres and a deal was made before he hit free agent.

So I'm going with Mike Grier. Classy guy, worked hard, led the way and helped the youngsters develop. I'm glad he came back to finnish his career in Buffalo.

If only there were two guys the Wild could've signed that were heads above the rest of the free agent class. :sarcasm:

Hamhuis

The Senators and free agency haven't gone together for the past few seasons. It's just not BMurr's forte. If I were to make a guess off the top of my head, the best signing for this team would be Sergei Gonchar. Sens wouldn't have made the playoffs without him last season after he played much better than his first season with the organization.

Also, it's not a secret that Gonch has been great at showing the young D-men we have the ropes.

Schultz for Edmonton and Prospal for Columbus. If we go a couple of years back, Huselius was a good signing until his injury troubles. Hopefully Aucoin will do what Prospal did last year. Put up points and show great leadership.

Willie Mitchell
Rob Scuderi

For the Ducks it would have to be Niedermayer and Selanne after the lockout.

EichHart 01-20-2013 02:36 AM

Christian Ehrhoff easily.

Dependent on the window we're talking about...Sergei Gonchar.

Of guys on the team there's not a whole lot to choose from. Paul Martin (hasn't lived up to his deal , but I expect a bounce-back season), Deryk Engelland (worked out as nicely as you can possibly hope a depth AHL signing could), Matt Cooke (probably my vote), Tanner Glass (made his Pens debut today...4th line PKer), and Ben Lovejoy (undrafted collegiate free agent) are the only free agent signings on the team.

Free agency is rarely kind to Pittsburgh-based teams.

Minnesota and Florida are going to love this thread...

2nd that one...
Put him on the 2nd PP unit though - together with Stepan and Kreider & McD + Stralman on the point.
Put Cally with Nash, Pyatt, Richards and MDZ on the top unit.
That is all I ask...

On the sharks current 23 (+1 for injured Demers) they have four players the acquired by free agency. Of these four, two of them were undrafted free agents in Andrew Desjardins and Matt Irwin who has yet to play an nhl game. The other two are Handzus who had a horrible year last year, and Adam Burish who has yet to play a game with the sharks. So Desjardins is the answer for current players in my opinion.

If you want to go back a few years it would be an already retired Roenick, Blake at the end of his career, or Malholtra when nobody wanted him.

Edit, I just did some checking. All time the player that scored the most points for the sharks that was acquired by free agency is Scott Thornton.

Not just because he has played so well for us, but because it burned the Oilers too.

Signing Mark Giordano as an undrafted free agent was a brilliant move too, but that was too long ago I think
