Wayne Simmonds??

Flyers need help on D without a doubt. I know Pens and Flyers would never make a deal but for HF fun. What would it take to get Wayne to Pitt?

LetsGoFlyers1825 01-20-2013 02:17 PM

If we need help on D, why would we be going to Pittsburgh of all teams?

Boba Fettuccine 01-20-2013 02:22 PM

I couldn't see the Phlyers and the Penguins making a trade.

dannyj10 01-20-2013 02:41 PM

In the thread I said i know it would never happen but for fun. Pens have plenty of D prospects and that could help Philly out.

MurrayBannerman 01-20-2013 02:55 PM

Hjalmarsson?

Flyers should give Buffalo a call. We've got 8 defensemen on the roster, as well as Pardy in the A. One of Leopold, Sekera, or Brennan will probably be moved at some point this year. Leopold could be had for a 3rd, but Darcy is probably going to hold onto him until somebody offers something more. Sekera for Wayne Simmonds also seems like a pretty fair deal to me. Anyone who disputes that should look at Reggie's cap hit this year. He's a top 4 guy on any team, and he's due for a damn big raise.

Yeah, I was kinda confused about a team looking for scoring being interested in Simmonds also. :p:

Flyers D isn't that bad, assuming Timmonen retires after this year then they do need a talented offensive guy to compliment the giants they've currently assembled (Meszaros, Schenn, Grossman and Coburn are all 6'2 + 220 lbs +). Looks like slim pickings in the UFA market when it comes to offensive dmen though.

Grossman - Coburn
Meszaros - UFA/Trade
Gustaffson - Schenn

is a decent defense depending who they can find to fit next to Meszaros. They could definitely use some more offensive talented dmen in their prospect pool.

I'd only move Simmonds if it was in a package for a true number 1 dman. We have enough 2-5ers.

I'd agree with that, if they can't get a number 1(or really good #2) then Simmonds wont be involved. I could see them moving Matt Read for a talented offensive 3-4 who is a similar age.

Setting aside the otherwise fatal premise of Philly-Pitt per your request, Philadelphia's need for defense requires players, not prospects. They've got prospects. (They could use more, but that's not something they'll trade roster players for; that's where draft picks come in.) So Pittsburgh is not a good trading partner regardless.

Which players do you consider as being true # 1 dmen in the NHL which would realistically be available?

Actually buffalo will be more interested in one of their younger fowards

I "might" do that.

Not many, which is why we had to give the offer sheet to Weber a try. I was somewhat hoping Holmgren would offersheet Kulikov or Subban in hopes that they'd develop into a number 1 dman.

And since there really isn't too many top tier defenseman available we pretty much have to play some Philly pond hockey in hopes of outscoring the other team, because really, we're loaded with second pairing dmen and don't need another.

That package would have to include Couturier or B.Schenn. No amount of picks would make up the difference for a #1 dman if Simmonds is involved.

Might have had a chance with Kulikov. Habs would match pretty much anything the Flyers could throw at Subban given the Flyers capspace.

I figure the Habs would have matched any offersheet, just like I imagined Nash would match the Weber one, but there's no harm in giving it a try. And yea, I really think Holmgren dropped the ball on Kulikov.

Might do that. Still not entirely sold on gardiner though.

schenn schenn for Subban

Crede777 01-21-2013 12:57 AM

Philly is re-tooling with youth. So trading for a top pairing defenseman who is 30+ would be kind of pointless.

But you're not going to get a top pairing defenseman who is younger. Unless you draft him or somehow get one in free agency. So...

LAX attack* 01-21-2013 12:58 AM

how is simmer doing in Philadelphia? I always thought that deep within him there was a really good offensive player just waiting to arrive

The Flyers are in desperate need of help on d? Well then, how about:

to Phi: Ballard, 5th round pick

to VAN: Simmonds, 4th round pick
