I worry too much about money, and am looking to stop that.

In the grand scheme of my life, I won't dwell on the tax dollars, but I'll remember the building.

I drive down 104th every day too...hell, this will likely eff up my parking, and I'm still all for it...it will be a really nice addition to the downtown core. :handclap:

just got this e-mail at work

Today Council approved a new framework to build a $480 million downtown arena that will become the new home of the Edmonton Oilers. This agreement between the City of Edmonton and the Katz Group comes after many months of negotiations and design work. A new downtown arena is a critical step forward for our plans to revitalize the heart of our city.
The arena and entertainment district is one of a series of catalyst projects outlined in the Capital City Downtown Plan. A strong downtown is a vital part of a dynamic city and today Edmonton took a huge step in the right direction.
You can read the full news release at http://www.edmonton.ca/city_governme...new-arena.aspx and learn more about the deal at www.edmonton.ca/downtownarena
I would like to extend my appreciation to all staff who have contributed many hours working collectively and collaboratively to advance this project. This project, involving staff from all Departments, is a great example of a One City approach.

Simon

Yes I work at the City in Planning and I'm partially involved with the arena... that's why I'm not posting in this thread (other than this particular post)

I am truly excited for the city and citizens of Edmonton with this new arena. Sure it's pricey but it will be worth it. It will bring life and vibrancy to an otherwise dead downtown. This is the first step towards making Edmonton a better city.

Awesome stuff!:)

I am very happy this has happened. Now I want them to officially sign something so we don't have any more surprises.

I'm getting drunk off the tears of haters. :handclap:

From the Edmonton Journal article:

http://www.edmontonjournal.com/sport...481/story.html

Several Oilers players, who lost 6-3 to San Jose Sharks Tuesday night, watched the discussion from the front row of the council chamber, where they were teased by Mayor Stephen Mandel.

“This is a punishment. Don’t ever allow six goals in the first period, otherwise you have to come and sit here again.”

So yeah basically all's well that ends well. I always was pretty confident both the new CBA and the new arena would get done, probably pretty close to each other no matter how bleak things looked maybe six months ago.

Senor Catface 01-23-2013 04:36 PM

I like Option A, because the plaza view looks like a giant Cylon head with a blue visor.

402 01-23-2013 04:37 PM

Good news we aren't moving to Seattle for a long time :sarcasm:
Great to have this done and to have secured 35 years of Edmonton Oilers

@JasonGregor: "There is a location agreement signed by Oilers and the NHL to keep Oilers in Edmonton for life of the arena lease, 35 years." Laforge. #nhl

Hockey Nightmare 01-23-2013 04:40 PM

I like that the NHL signed it. So if Katz has to sell someday, it won't matter as much.

Yeah, I loved that. Mandel was in fine form today.

I am planning on buying a condo downtown......do you think this arena will increase the price of the condos in the next couple years?

Niet 01-23-2013 05:11 PM

Hopefully this doesn't go off the rails again

Gord 01-23-2013 05:13 PM

I was pretty sure there was dancing in the streets last fall with an "agreement"

so what's the difference between this agreement and the agreement they had last year?

It's basically the same with an extra $30 million (split by the city and Katz Group).

Katz set the construction back by about six months with his money grab (annual $6 million subsidy) last fall. Construction was scheduled to start this spring originally but now won't start until August/September.

so no use getting excited about this agreement either then, at this point.

Awesome news.

Seattle my ***, I hope that city never gets a NHL team.

Thank you Gary!

I think this time is a lot more solid though, they actually have the master agreement signed, and the actual dollar values are assigned to Katz and the City. For instance, a lot of people assumed the city was paying the full price on the Wintergarden, however Katz is paying $28 million on it and the city 25.

thats very good news, then.

alphahelix 01-23-2013 06:06 PM

I hope its the best arena in the NHL. Edmonton deserves a nice toy!

Dorian2 01-23-2013 06:15 PM

I'm happy that it is finally done.

And to the posters that are complaining about the pedway thing...just wondering if you've ever worked downtown. The pedway system facilitates travel to and from a lot of different business...especially in the cold winter months. It is definitely a needed addition for the multitude of businesses that will be opening in and around the new venue.

BlueChip01 01-23-2013 07:25 PM

Place is going to be spectacular. Katz will have his own private elevator to his suite, nice underground heated parking for players will help as well. Dressing room will be GIGANTIC.

Blue And Orange 01-23-2013 07:27 PM

Very glad they picked Option A.

Option A looks more iconic. Edmonton needs an iconic structure in downtown.

Q Continuum 01-23-2013 07:33 PM

Well, I know who I'm not voting for next election.

And the missing $107M from the province, allotment fund, lottery, casino, or whatnot shows up.

It's funny though, there are things about option B I like better though. For example, not having that tower immediately to the left of the plaza.
