Ryan O'Reilly's KHL contract terminated

It appears that ROR's two year contract with Metallurg was terminated by mutual agreement this morning and he is returning to the US. No real mention of what this means with respect to this his contract negotiations with the Avs.

I wasn't sure where to put this news, but it seems to fit on this board.

bottomofthefoodchain 01-24-2013 08:34 AM

And people thought he would be stuck there. Yeah...

Razor29 01-24-2013 08:36 AM

With Downie injured and such, I wouldn't be surprised if he is getting the contract he wanted.

HarrisonFord 01-24-2013 08:39 AM

ROR about to get a big money truck dumped on him

Yeah, if Colorado wanted to be in PO race they had to bring ROR back, imo.

Unless, he's gotten traded :naughty:.

SoundwaveIsCharisma 01-24-2013 08:54 AM

He was injured a few games ago in the KHL, some reports saying that it may be worse than originally thought. So it could be very simply that he and the KHL realized that he would be too injured to play for a large chunk of the season and therefore wasn't worth keeping around in Russia.

joe89 01-24-2013 08:58 AM

Said it as soon as he signed it this would happen as long as the appropriate NHL deal would arrive. That's how they do it in the KHL. Terminate the contract, cite injury. Easy peasy for both parts. Technically not a lockout deal.

Yes, Ryan O'Reilly is coming home from KHL. No, he is not any closer to deal with COL. There's been no progress. None
As I was saying before...

Come on we both know that the Avalanche organization is secret as hell. No insider has inside information on the Avs or all those trades Sherman makes wouldn't be out of the blue. Even if ROR did say something, could be because they are close and his agent or the Avs is telling him to keep his mouth shut.

GordieHoweHatTrick 01-24-2013 09:20 AM

Trade him to Toronto for scraps please. We could use a guy like him :D

TOGuy14 01-24-2013 09:32 AM

I am still willing to offer Gardiner + Biggs / Colborne / Percy + 3rd rd pick for ROR with some flexibility on the deal.

centrehice 01-24-2013 09:37 AM

Hmm, I didn't realize ROR signed a 2 year.... why?

Most NHLers signed the "lockout" contracts in the KHL, why would Ryan sign a 2 year deal?

Negotiating ploy.

And the Colorado Avalanche would like to inform you that they are still able to say no.

Negotiating ploy failed hard. Now he's injured which will lower his value and all his perceived leverage is gone.

Why people insist on putting Gardiner in trade rumors is beyond me. Defence wins championships and he is one the best young d in the game. This is the kind of dumb stuff Leaf GMs of the past would do.

1. We have Reilly in the wings and Liles who can bring the offence for now.
2. How do you dismiss this trade on the premises on defense when ROR is a VERY good defensive C?

Freaky Styley 01-24-2013 10:40 AM

Whatever the reason, I'm just glad he's back in NA. Can only be a step forward to him re-signing.

What rt said plus Metallurg already had their lockout contract quota filled with Malkin, Gonchar, Kulemin. He could not have signed one with them.

Freudian 01-24-2013 10:59 AM

Strange that he would leave them. I heard O'Reilly was a fan of Metallurg Magnitogorsk growing up.

I wouldn't do this personally as a leaf fan. Gardiner is a young player we need to keep! O'Reilly isn't exactly the type of centre we need anyway.

I'd definitely offer Gardiner+ for Duchene though.

COL having trouble resigning ROR, seems like just the thing that would make them hesistate to trade Duchene though, doesn`t it?

Or a step in trading him

Yep of course. It was closer to a fantasy proposal than a reality proposal.

Lacaar 01-24-2013 11:43 AM

If he's hurt why would he leave the team and terminate the contract and hence giving up the money? Is it because he didn't want to stay in Russia to re-hab the injury? Do they even make him stay in Russia?

1. He's hurt, doesn't want to stay in Russia to re-hab which the team requires if he wants to be paid.
2. He's not loving Russia and just wants to go home.
3. He's close to a deal with Colorado and is heading home.

Any other possibilities?
