2013 MLS Season Thread

Seems like the right time now that every team has a coach and training camps are under way. Only 37 days until First Kick.

Whitecaps sign Japanese AM Daigo Kobayashi.

Presumably with a heavy dose of Manneh up front? I'd call that a competitive team, at the very least, and they have a good shot of returning to the playoffs and making some noise.

Tiebert hardly played at all last year, I doubt he starts this year. Plus it seems Reine is a fan of the 2 D-mid system.

If the Galaxy don't sign Lampard and Landon is retired, we are doomed. I'm just glad Juninho has signed a permanent deal.

IHaveNoCreativity 01-25-2013 11:17 AM

Landon has said he will be back, and it's looking like Lampard will arrive soon.

I read on wikipedia that the draft has been considered to be secondary to youth academies during recent years. Do all teams have their own system and are those players forced to sign at their club when they reach eligible age? Or how does this NA system work?

Quick write up on the HGP rule (from the Red Bulls academy website)

Quote:

Players in the New York Red Bulls Academy will be added to the MLS home grown talent identification list.

Players who are on the list will benefit from the opportunity to be signed directly by the New York Red Bulls first team, as opposed to entering the MLS Draft where they could be selected by any MLS team. Set in place by the MLS in 2006, the rule is designed to provide increased opportunities for local players. In order to be eligible players must abide by the following guidelines.
All players must reside in a team's "Home Territory" for at least one year prior to being added to the team's Home Grown Player List.

Players must be added to an MLS team's Home Grown Player List prior to entering a four-year college, but can maintain their Home Grown Player status during college if registered before entering that institution.

Members of the U17, U20, and U23 U.S. National Teams cannot be added to an MLS team's Home Grown Player List, but a player already on a Home Grown Player List can maintain that status if selected for a U.S. National team at a later date.
It's not making the draft obsolete, but in some cases (especially this year with Zardes and Yedlin) some of the top draft prospects will sign HGP deals and creates less top talent in the draft.

So could you make the argument that the draft will highlight the late bloomers and those who weren't afforded the ability to play in a academy structure?

Sure. There will still be plenty of talent available in future drafts and it will still be important for the clubs, it's just I think you'll see less and less top talent in the coming years.

Because making fun of Chivas never gets old....

I'm told Chivas USA came very close to dealing Dan Kennedy on Wednesday only to back out of a big deal. #ChivasGringoFireSale

Dan Kennedy WILL be on a new team come next week. #ChivasUSA #MLStransfers
So they've made it pretty much known that Kennedy and Joseph aren't needed. How in the world do they expect to get anything of value in return? Please let Agudelo go to Celtic, MLS, don't let him rot at Chivas. Well on second thought, they're probably going to trade him, seeing as he's not Mexican.

True, I forgot Rochat played with Koffie in the midfield last year. I guess it will be closer to this instead:

They will likely get both. If they can tread water until May, they will be in great shape.

Some possible kit leaks

Those Seattle aways are very nice. But I'm glad the Galaxy got Juninho signed, and that London will be back. Just need Lampard to get here.

vsk92 01-25-2013 04:48 PM

Portland (Red & White) one looks too much like Ajax's shirt

Vamos Rafa 01-25-2013 05:17 PM

Are the Galaxy changing their kits? I really hope not. The 2012 kit I bought last year is still nameless. Heck, tag is still there. I was thinking about putting Beckham's name on it since it was probably his last season and I wanted to get it signed by him, but it didn't happen. Now if we get Lampard, I'll definitely put his name on it.

The Alaska Airlines logo looks too much like Air Asia so that kinda reminded me of QPR.

IHaveNoCreativity 01-25-2013 05:52 PM

I miss the blue Seattle away jersey, it was beautiful.

worstfaceoffmanever 01-25-2013 07:30 PM

The Sounders are ditching the man-bra on their away kits? Hopefully the home ones will follow suit. I just hope they keep the "Easter" alternates they trotted out last year.

There have been no talks of changing the jerseys again. It seemed that most of them liked the new ones alot, so I suspect that they won't change them. They do have a new 3rd jersey coming out soon.

Brock Anton 01-27-2013 12:42 PM

English tabloids (BBC, Mirror and Daily Fail) say that Beckham will try to get Ashley Cole, Steven Gerrard, Michael Carrick and Peter Crouch to come over to MLS in the next couple years in his new role as 'MLS recruitment officer'.

The only one I could possibly see coming over in the next couple years is Crouch and maybe Cole.

Vamos Rafa 01-27-2013 06:02 PM

If it wasn't for Mexico's violent crimes, would Liga MX be the preferred North American destination for former stars in Europe?

Live in the Now 01-27-2013 06:04 PM

No. The culture and economy there would also be a major factor in keeping that from becoming the case.

IHaveNoCreativity 01-27-2013 06:38 PM

Whatever happened to that MLS challenge against Mexican teams ?
