Would You Trade for or Give Subban an OS?

Some team could offer sheet Subban up to $5.04-million AAV and only give up two picks: 1st and 3rd. If it's a late first, why not?
This was posted in the NHL thread on here.

The Hawks do have some guys that hit, but adding another guy who has consistent physicality as an element to his game would be a tremendous addition. The downside is that the Hawks don't have a pick until the fourth-round of the draft if they give Subban, he signs it, and Bergy doesn't match it. The defense would be outstanding. You put Montador on LTIR and have Brookbank and Rozsival (presumably) as your seventh and eighth defenseman. That's what you call depth if you ask me. Nothing is preventing you from still flipping a defenseman in a trade for another center or goaltender. Chances are that Subban is a better player than the guy we will hopefully be picking late in the first-round. I think giving up a late first and a third will be a better deal for the Hawks than what they'll have to give up in a straight up trade.

I say let's do it, but I'd like to hear your thoughts.

Montreal matches, zero hesitation.

Cullksinikers 01-26-2013 12:04 PM

Another thing I'd like to know is if the Hawks can at the moment since they don't have a 2013 3rd. Can they give him an OS with a 2013 1st and a 2014 3rd?

Doesn't seem like they want to pay him that kind of money.

my problem is we don't have enough space to do it, deal with our own RFAs, look to fix other holes we have.

however, if we could swing it financially, i'd definitely support it.

Cullksinikers 01-26-2013 12:08 PM

This is what you'd be looking at:

Keith-Seabrook
Hjalmarsson-Subban
Leddy-Oduya
Rozsival, Brookbank

As I said in the OP, you can always include a defenseman in a deal for goaltending or center help.

ohhh...i forgot about that. i thought it was our 2nd we didn't have. no, according to this the picks have to be available in the next draft (i.e. 2013)...so we couldn't do it.

http://thehockeywriters.com/2011-12-...nsation-rules/

so...i guess we'd have to try to trade for him.

SouthsideHawkGuy 01-26-2013 12:10 PM

Just what the Hawks need: a touch of classless.

In all seriousness, if they can make it work, I'm all for it.

Cullksinikers 01-26-2013 12:11 PM

Always could make a trade for a 3rd.

I'd say Carcillo brought that now and then.

Exactly.

If you can get him to sign an offer sheet, do it, but don't expect him to actually make it to Chicago.

no, i'm pretty sure it's your own third you have to give up...not one you acquire elsewhere. we'd have to get the third we traded away back, i think.

zytz 01-26-2013 12:13 PM

Signing PK means making a trade to clear some of our existing cap first, I think. Also don't think it's possible to keep both Leddy and PK past this season. Though Christ, could you imagine this back end:

Keith Seabs
Subban - Hammer
Leddy - Oduya

Cullksinikers 01-26-2013 12:14 PM

I'd love to see the Hawks get a 3rd-round pick out of some prospect to be able to give an OS.

My guess would be that the asking price for Subban in a trade would be Leddy, a 1s, and a little more. I'd rather give up a prospect, a newly-acquired third, and a late first for Subban through an OS.

CPHawksFan 01-26-2013 12:16 PM

I'd rather get a decent backup goaltender as this point.

They have to have their own 3rd, unless that changed with the new CBA.

I said in the OP and in another post that with Subban, if they wanted to attempt to, they could trade on of their defenseman in a deal for goaltending or center help.

If you think you can just offersheet him and easily sign him because Montreal doesn't want to give a long term contract you're dreaming. Just because we want to sign him to a bridge deal doesn't mean we won't match any offer sheets.

They have their own 3rd, but it isn't from 2013. They have one next year.

I am guessing an OS is a no-go.

Son of a bee sting.

Anyway with the new cba no offer sheet you ever make will have enough money to make us not want to match it and take the compensation.

What? You don't keep the picks if you match the OS.

Thanks for clearing that up:shakehead

No, not a fan of him at all.

Would rather go for a 5mil G than him.

What he's saying is in his opinion, no matter how much Subban would potentially sign an OS for, they would pay him that dollar amount since it would still be more valuable than the compensation they received back.

I, for one, think that's absurd since Nashville would have gotten four first-round picks for Weber. However, Subban won't get that money.
