A closer look at the top5 (info via Eliteprospects.com):

http://files.eliteprospects.com/layo...jones_2_ep.jpg

1. Seth Jones

A defenseman with an excellent frame. Jones' athleticism allows him to be a very good skater for a player of his size. He has excellent mobility and is solid both offensively and defensively. Jones gives a smart first pass and is also capable of utilizing his skating ability to bring the puck up himself. He has good hockey sense and is an assett on the powerplay thanks to his mobility, puck-handling and a very dangerous slapshot.

2. Nathan MacKinnon

A superstar in the making since an early age, MacKinnon provides a very complete combination of speed and skill. He is an amazing skater with fantastic puckhandling. MacKinnon has the ability to make quick plays and score flashy goals, but isn't shy about battling for the puck in front of the net either. He is surprisingly physical and owns a great shot to go along with quick hands.

3. Jonathan Drouin

An agile forward, Drouin is very creative and a good skater. He is an extremely offensive player with fantastic hands and excellent on-ice-vision. Drouin has a good shot but is best used as a playmaker and is very dangerous on powerplay. Drouin is not a large player or an explosive skater, but he is very agile and able to play his way out of tight spots thanks to his hockey sense.

4. Aleksander "Sasha" Barkov

A very calm center who uses his vision well, Barkov has an excellent offensive game and good size. His very good passing and puckhandling combined with great hands and hockey sense make him a big offensive threat. He plays with high confidence and never seems to be under pressure. Barkov is a creative with a very solid overall package and the skill set to compensate for his below-average skating, making him one of the top prospects for the 2013 NHL Draft.

Thought this was in place after the piss poor start to the season.

Discuss.

angry_treefrog 01-27-2013 11:59 AM

Well done. This is probably all we have to look forward to this season, so might as well enjoy it.

SoupyFIN 01-27-2013 12:07 PM

I didn't include the date, originally meant for 30th of June, because it could get pushed back depending on how long the playoffs last.

Also it hasn't been confirmed by the league itself.

Let's become the Oilers of the East.

This year we'll tank, get the 1st overall and draft MacKinnon.

Next year we'll tank, get the 1st overall and draft McDavid.

Erick* 01-27-2013 12:11 PM

Since everyone seems to be mentioning the forwards in recent days, count me in on defenseman, Seth Jones, bandwagon.

There's no way the Panthers should pass up on Jones if they draft 1st. That's one rare physical specimen.

Ghoste 01-27-2013 12:13 PM

Since this is kinda like a tank thread, let's not forget that Weiss & Kuli are probably our best trade assets. It's possible they could net us two more 1st round picks. Use all three 1st round picks and go into full-on Edmonton, high-end skill mode drafting? Haha

McDavid is 2015. If we get MacKinnon, no way we're drafting 1st in 2014. MacKinnon will play next season.

SoupyFIN 01-27-2013 12:16 PM

If it ends up being between 3-10, I'll be furious if DT doesn't take Barkov. If it's 1 or 2, I'll be happy with regardless which one of Jones/MacKinnon gets picked by Tallon.

MacKinnon and Jones are very, very close according to most scouting services. Some have Mackinnon 1st, some have Jones 1st. I've seen both play a few times, I think it's really whether you want a forward or a defenseman. I think the Panthers would pick MacKinnon. He could be the next Stamkos, I can't see us not taking him if we have the chance.

This guy is also only 18 years of age and he's already listed at 6'4," .208 .lbs.

AND HIS DAD'S NAME IS POPEYE!

I like Jones too, but on the real, we need OFFENSE. MacKinnon sound really good at #1. If we have the 2nd overall pick, then it's easier to take Jones.

You've probably seen them both play a lot more than I have so I'll take your word for it.

All I know is that it's really hard to pass up on a 6'4, .208 lbs. (he'll probably only get bigger, as well) player with all the tools that Seth Jones has.

I would normally just say take the forward, but this guy pretty much has it all.

Android 16 01-27-2013 12:20 PM

Seth Jones over MacKinnon?

:shakehead

Plus he's had success with Huby in the Subway Series.

Jones will provide offense, as well. He has all the tools to be a very, very good offensive defenseman.

Also, we could use a game-changing, franchise D-man. I know many think Kulikov and Gudbranson are that guy, but I don't really think they are.

Yes, what a horrible idea.
The guy is only listed as the #1 prospect. Ahead of MacKinnon...

Laughable idea though. :help:

Just like Oilers didn't end up last after taking RNH. :sarcasm:

Mike Matheson could be that guy.

Why would we pass on a potential allstar in MacKinnon. Also, keep in mind we can barely score 2 goals per game. Makes no sense.

No, he can't.
There's really no comparison.

It's laughable to draft another defenseman..

Sometimes the defenseman is too good to pass up...

No doubt, Jones is the total package, it's very easy to salivate over him. By the same token, you can say the same about MacKinnon. A pure sniper, elite skater, and he plays defense and uses his body effectively.

Erick* 01-27-2013 12:29 PM

Also, drafting Jones gives us some great depth on the D core which means we could trade one of our own for a PROVEN NHL forward.
