Preview
PANTHERS (1-4-0) at LIGHTNING (4-1-0)

TV: FS-F, SUN

Season series: This is the first of five games between the NHL's two Florida-based teams. The Lightning dropped the first two games of last season's season series but rebounded with four straight triumphs, including two that came after regulation.

Big story: The Panthers, who have dropped their last four in regulation after beating the Carolina Hurricanes in their season opener, never lost more than three straight games in 2011-12 when they won their first-ever Southeast Division title. The last time the Panthers began a season 1-4-0 was in 2009, when they finished 14th in the Eastern Conference and 11 points out of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Team Scope:

Panthers: Florida dropped a 7-1 decision to the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday in Sunrise. Peter Mueller scored the lone goal for the home team, which has been outscored 18-3 since scoring a 5-1 victory against the Hurricanes on Jan. 19. Jose Theodore started in net for the Panthers, but was pulled for Scott Clemmensen to start the second period after yielding three goals on nine shots.

"Time is short here and obviously we're not taking good advantage of it," coach Kevin Dineen said after Saturday's defeat.

Lightning: The Lightning, 3-0-0 on home ice, close out a season-high five-game homestand. Steven Stamkos (three goals, seven assists), who had a goal and an assist in a 5-1 victory over Philadelphia on Sunday, enters with a five-game point streak. Additionally, Vincent Lecavalier, Eric Brewer, Victor Hedman and Teddy Purcell also scored for the Lightning, who spotted the Flyers a 1-0 lead less than a minute into the game before scoring five unanswered goals.

Lecavalier, the Lightning captain, also picked up his 22nd career fighting major and first since Feb. 3, 2009, when he tangled with Luke Schenn 5:09 into the first period. The Lightning have been prone to quick starts this season, as evidenced by the fact the club has outscored the opposition, 13-1, in the first period.

Who's hot: Lightning rookie Cory Conacher has tallied a point in four of his team's five games to open the season. … Panthers defenseman Brian Campbell not only leads the team with four points (two goals, two assists), but he also averages a team-high 25:06 in ice time.

Injury report: Florida forwards Kris Versteeg (groin), Stephen Weiss (lower body) and Tomas Fleischmann (skate cut) are questionable. Forwards Marcel Goc (ankle) and Sean Bergenheim (groin) and defenseman Erik Gudbranson (shoulder) are doubtful. … The Lightning placed defensemen Mattias Ohlund (knee) and Matt Taormina (upper body) on injured reserve.

Btw, this is my first GDT ever so it's nothing special and the lineups are just based on speculations.

LUUUUUIS 01-29-2013 05:48 AM

Good job! I like the clean presentation.

If the lines are as speculated, I'm expecting a loss. Not even Versteeg's excitement about being back can overcome his rust and Santorelli being in the lineup.

Per twitter..

Shore played in the AHL ASG last night and had a 3 point night in the West's 7-6 win over the East.

This is doing great for his first year in the AHL. Excited for his development.

30 points in 41 games and a +4 on the 2nd worst team in the West. AHL All-star.

Heard he is likely to get called up for tonight..

MacKinnon here we come!

Let's get the win tonight!
I want to see the Panthers playing like this:

You are correct. I read on twitter he's been called up.

ShootIt 01-29-2013 08:56 AM

Shore should be our first line center with Flash and Steeg as his winners.

Better the current setup IMO.

Jeff Shafer 01-29-2013 08:59 AM

is it too early to ask for a Christmas present? I don't wanna get our butts kicked anymore.

PanthersRule96 01-29-2013 09:23 AM

We usually play well against the bolts. I predict either a blowout for Tampa or sneaking out a win.

PanthersHockey1 01-29-2013 09:30 AM

I just want to see them be physical pound them into the glass and hold up them at our blueline. Im tired of seeing teams fly right past our blue line with glorious scoring chances. We need to make life a living hell in the neutral zone. Thats where games are won and lost.

PSLguy 01-29-2013 09:38 AM

Good job on the GDT! I like artist's rendering of the arena.

Well, the so-called experts picked Carolina to win the division and the Panthers dominated them (for one period anyway) so with these same "experts" picking the Panthers (FL +160, Tampa -170) to get crushed tonight, I expect a Panthers victory!

Versteeg gets two goals, Hubs one - Panthers win 3-2.

Well, I can hope!!!

SoupyFIN 01-29-2013 09:44 AM

Dineen please, scratch Parros. I'm begging you.

Dr Beinfest 01-29-2013 10:14 AM

It's amazing how quickly everyone has abandoned the season.

I mean... things aren't looking so hot but it's still early enough. Give it another 5 games. Obviously with a short season, if they don't have their act together by the first quarter of the season things start to look bleak.

It doesn't take much for Panther fans to give up after the number of years they've been disappointed. Unfortunately one year of playoffs in that time isn't enough to break that thought process. Positivity isn't something we're good at.

AaronEkbald 01-29-2013 10:27 AM

We need to avoid the bad start.

This has been our game plan the past 4 games.. The puck drops. Give the puck away and hook, hold, trip and slash to get it back until we get a penalty. Lose the face-off, repeat the last process until we get another call against us. The 5-on-3 ensues and we give up the goal we all saw coming. Spend the next 5-8 minutes trying to take another penalty. Take a penalty and give up another goal. Then give up a goal in the last minute of the first period. It's 3-0 and we don't have enough offense touch to even sniff a comeback.

The last 4 games have been different variations of this.. we gotta change it with smarter play and better efforts out of everyone.

We need to have a great first period to give ourselves a chance to win.

Yes, please. He sucks. Let's roll four lines.

gizmo12688 01-29-2013 10:53 AM

I'm down for putting Shore on the first line to center Flash and Steeg. He can win faceoffs at least.

pens87jets7fan 01-29-2013 10:56 AM

same shore is doing really well.

jkscott 01-29-2013 11:28 AM

Nightly hypothetical:

What if Parros actually contributed?

Then people would be saying to keep him in and he would actually be an asset to the team instead of the useless pick up he is now.

FlaPnthrsPunk 01-29-2013 12:39 PM

Excellent job on the GDT! I'm not saying that we're in a great position to win tonight and it's really hard to stay positive after what we've seen over the last four games, but I don't think we're going to see another blowout. Dineen drove them hard in practice yesterday and the players know the situation.

Even though Versteeg may not contribute too much tonight just coming back from injury, having him in the lineup hopefully will boost the rest of the players morals.

Good to see Shore back in the lineup after an impressive performance in the AHL AllStar Game. That kid impresses me more every game.

I really hope Dineen finally decides to put in Strachan instead of Ellerby. We cannot afford to take stupid penalties tonight with an explosive Lightning offense.

End the damn losing streak! Go Panthers!

Slight correction...

Tampa has outscored opposition 13-1 in the third period, not the first. We've started pretty well, finished great, and the second period we get our ass kicked. Anyway, hoping for a good game tonight!

JP Mick 01-29-2013 01:23 PM

Nice GDT! Thank god Versteeg is back, LET's GO PANTHERSSSSS!!!!!!!!

Update on our team: We've played 15 periods, and 14 of them have sucked.
