#1 vs. #2

I started thinking about what teams would look like if they were made up of players who were taken in the same spot in the draft over the years. I started out going through 1-30 of the first round, but it was just too much work trying to figure out who never made it to the nhl and whether or not i should count them.

In the end... I went through and picked out the players who were currently playing this year and were drafted First overall and Second overall. I did look up defense, but turns out not many defenseman are taken with those picks.

Anyways... my question to you is which forward group would you take to win if they played each other. ALSO, i just kind of tossed the lines together without much thought. You can reply here with how you would set the lines.

p.s. it was kind of really weird. there turned out to be EXACTLY 12 active forwards who were drafted first and 12 active forwards drafted second. strange...

TEAM FIRST PICK
Taylor Hall - Sidney Crosby - Patrick Kane
Vincent Lecavalier - Steven Stamkos - John Tavares
Ilya Kovalchuk - Joe Thornton - Rick Nash
Alex Ovechkin - Ryan Nugent-Hopkins - Nail Yakupov

TEAM SECOND PICK
Patrick Marleau - Evgeni Malkin - Bobby Ryan
Daniel Sedin - Eric Staal - Tyler Seguin
James van Riemsdyk - Jordan Staal - Gabriel Landeskog
David Legwand - Jason Spezza - Dany Heatley

the biggest thing i realized going through this, is that we haven't had hardly any huge busts at the top of the draft in the past 20 years or so...

WOW. Lame. I messed up the poll. I meant First overall vs. second overall. Not first ROUND vs. second round.

boo.

Moderator Edit: Fixed the poll options.

First one AINEC

I guess the first line is a wash but after that its really not close.

Leidi J 01-31-2013 07:15 AM

hahahaha ok so not fun since it seems first picks are the best. would anyone jumble up their dream lines?

Adding the three active defensemen at each spot would help this poll in the favor of 2nd overalls.

Add Erik Johnson, Chris Philips, and Ed Jovanoski to team 1st Overall.

Add Victor Hedman, Drew Doughty, and Wade Redden to 2nd Overall.

I'd still probably go with team 1st overall though.

This could make for a fun post if we took lower first round spots and opened it up to post you best team of active players from, say, spots 15-30. You might have to make it from two spots so you could actually make half a roster.

Easily first.

1st AINEC.

Maybe an interesting one to do would be team #1 overall (+ highest drafted defensemen/goalies) vs the rest of the draft classes.

What about 1st forward chosen + 2nd defenseman chosen vs. 2nd forward chosen + 1st defenseman chosen? Not sure what this would look like, I don't follow defenseman as closely.

Looking at the draft results, defenseman are a bit of a crapshoot. Still heavily in favor of the first team.

Team #1 overall.

Leidi J 01-31-2013 04:14 PM

yea i looked up goalies too.

Team #1: Marc-Andre Fleury, Rick DIpietro
Team #2: Kari Lehtonen

WingsMike 01-31-2013 05:04 PM

When Ovi is on your 4th line, you're probably gonna win.

Kresnik 01-31-2013 05:38 PM

First overall team is obviously more skilled, but i'm not so sure that they win though, it really comes to which team who has the best chemistry.

MattyMo35 01-31-2013 05:40 PM

Pretty easily #1
