Is it me... or are the Habs struggling on even strength?

I mean we scored all these PP goals that it seems to hide a little the fact that we haven't been that good on even strength... and I won't even get into how woeful our PK has been!

The Pleky line has been good, the rookie line has played well considering it's 2 rookies playing with a grinder.

Our so called top line has been brutal and our fourth line are amazing... at getting penalties.

Is the loss of Max Pac the main reason for this issue? The lack of production from Lars Eller who seems to be lost wherever he plays? Or does Therrien need to change all the lines and experiment to find winning combinations?

I mean something will need to be done otherwise the PP will have to keep being this effective all season and that's not a guarantee (although I hope it does).

Discuss!

We're actually doing well on ES right now (1.29 5-5 F/A), but we are sucking mightily on the penalty kill. Obviously it would be nice to get some production from the DD line, but on the PK is where we really need to improve, it's sitting at an unimpressive 78% right now. We are really taxing our d-men, and it's starting to show.

Monctonscout 01-31-2013 10:11 AM

It's just you, before last night we were +3 on ST and +3 5 on 5.

LePoche69 01-31-2013 10:12 AM

To me:

They're above average on PP.
They're slightly below average even strengh.
They're below average on PK.
They're above average in goal.

Truth is, it's barely a .500 team. We shouldn't get carried over too much by their season start. There was so much enthousiasm, it's almost certain it's gonna slowly fade away to let their flaws be more apparent.

They're interesting and fun to watch, but they have lots of flaws. We love the kids, but they're too young yet to be really efficient on a nightly basis. And the d-men are below average in their own zone.

They'll fight for a playoff spot, which is good news. But for now, I'll stick to my initial prediction: they'll end somewhere between 8 and 11.

2nd periods are horrible

Kriss E 01-31-2013 10:40 AM

We're currently 7th in the current Goals For/Against ratio at ES. So, we're not bad at all.
We're 8th on the PP, and 19th on the PK. So, it's actually where we are best.

Subban will help our PK tremendously, as well as our ES and PP.

If the refereeing is consistent with what we've seen yesterday, then special teams are even more important than ES.

sharks9 01-31-2013 10:41 AM

Pacioretty was 4th in the league last year in ESGs (Behind Malkin, Stamkos and Gaborik) so losing him definitely hurts. Hopefully if the PP can keep playing the way it has been and our PK improves we'll be fine until he gets back.

You're right. But stats after 6 games are not enough to categorize a team.

True but I don't agree with Montreal being weak on 5 on 5. When it comes to the teams Top 10 in PP, we have the fourth best five on five game to compliment a Top 10 PP. That's a very good thing. We could still score more but that would come from Max Pacioretty.

HabbyGilmore 01-31-2013 10:53 AM

it's kind of just you but you're kinda sorta right?... Last night we just sucked in general which made us look horrible on ES, but the other games, no we've done good up til last night.

swimmer77 01-31-2013 11:06 AM

Markov has no even strength points.

Of course, just like coming to any kind of conclusion about them not being strong at ES.
It's only 6 games in, small sample for everything.

OP asked a question based on the 6 games we played. It just goes to show you how subjectivity can be completely wrong.

I'm not sure but I believe that Eller is hardly getting any PK time at all - which is disconcerting as he was one of the best PK forwards on the team last year. For some reason he has been supplanted by Armstrong.

The Russian General 01-31-2013 12:07 PM

The loss of Darche has greatly impacted the PK. Habs should sign him.

Buy him out.

Madam Kadri 01-31-2013 12:24 PM

Desharnais line sucks right now.

Pleks line seems to be only good on the breakaways.

Gally line has been boss in sheltered minutes on ES

Energy line obviously can't do much.

Yes, you can say we've been a one line team + dependent on the PP like a coke addict.

its definitely you.habs are doin just fine 5 on 5.it ll only get better once pk settles in.

Dharvey33 01-31-2013 12:30 PM

Subban will help the pk soon enough. We cannot say how much a difference Subban will make last year he was playing top pk minutes and we were the best in the league.

I have nothing against Emelin or Bouillon on the pk but i can't wait to see a pairing Subban Gorges

Uber Coca 01-31-2013 12:32 PM

I don't think it's an issue yet. Michel Therrien needs to figure a way to get Desharnais going because they've been our worst line on even strength.

bcv 01-31-2013 12:50 PM

I hate the PK right now. Stupid forward pairing and all I see them do is skate around being wayyyy to aggressive.

Seriously, why is White and Prust on the PK while Eller is on the bench and why the **** does Pleky and Moen are not always together on it? They were the best PK duo last year.

bigtimehockeyfan999 01-31-2013 12:50 PM

our PK needs PK than we'll be better.

JGRB 01-31-2013 12:57 PM

Simply put, our two best 5-on-5 players are currently out of the line up: Pacioretty and Subban.

That and Cole and DD are completely off their game right now. Once/if everything fall in order it should look a bit better. Granted the Habs haven't been that bad at ES but they haven't been stellar either. Decent but nothing earth shattering.

I love Frankie, but it seems like his reach isn't long enough to cut off passing lanes. His size isn't an issue along the boards, but it is in front of the net. Getting leverage on a 6'2" forward when you're 5'8" is a daunting task no matter how strong you are.

PK's quick feet and hands should help the PK out. (ok, that sentence looks weird)

Tim Wallach 01-31-2013 01:30 PM

Remember the suckiness of Cole to start last year? He's just a slow starter. Once he gets going, DD should too.

Eller's awareness, reaction time and assertiveness are all hindering him right now. He seriously needs a beast mode.

That's a #1 line right now that is contributing nothing. And we're 4-2. That's a positive if you ask me.
