Good for him.

wej20 01-31-2013 01:32 PM

Wow that was quick, guess they're hoping he's the next Andrew MacDonald.

CREW99AW 01-31-2013 01:33 PM

Congrats to Strait. This reminds me of the Andrew MacDonald's current contract and Frans Nielsen's previous contract. Isles gave MacDonald the security of a 4 yr deal, after only 40 or so nhl games and he signed on the cheap.

They also got Frans Nielsen to sign a 4 yr/$550,000 per deal, by giving him the security on a multi yr deal.
Hopefully, Strait works out as well.

wej20 01-31-2013 01:35 PM

Don't think he'll develp as well as MacDonald has but he should be a solid bottom pairing guy for the next 3 years.

Hopefully. He's been solid, but this is an awfully short length of time getting to this point.

Pretty much. I have faith that this will turn out to be a MacDonald like signing, Strait has been a smart and stable D-man for us just like MacDonald is. Snow, while being a ****** GM when it comes to the free agent market, is truly the king of Waivers. Have to give credit where credit is due.

Strait has been terrific in his short time with the Islanders, he looks like a bigger AMac out there, he has been great paired with Streit. Very happy to have him as a part of the core and I'm sure most fellow Isles fans will agree.

wej20 01-31-2013 01:37 PM

It is a bit surprising given that even if he played well for the rest of the season I don't think his price would have gone much higher than say a $900,000 caphit.

Good money, I was expecting it to be for the minimum.

xECK29x 01-31-2013 01:42 PM

3 years @ $775k per Staple...great value

PWJunior 01-31-2013 01:46 PM

I guess Strait was tired of the AHL-NHL express. Took the security of a one-way contract over the potential money. Good for him, been very happy with his play so far.

Izzy 01-31-2013 01:46 PM

Hopefully this works out... He did look good in the 2 games I watched.

Pretty much my thinking.

Nice contract! Good luck to him!

TheRollingPuck 01-31-2013 02:03 PM

Grait for Strait.

He's playing on their top pairing and getting over 19 min a night. Hard to suggest that he'll only ever be a bottom pairing guy after what we've seen to date.

Good for Strait. Still bitter that we waived him instead of Lovejoy. Hope he plays great for the Islanders - just not against us.

SLAPSHOT723 01-31-2013 02:06 PM

He's been awesome, but I don't like the timing. He really has been a surprise, very poised and steady.

SUBdrewgANS 01-31-2013 02:07 PM

well that escalated quickly

Zirakzigil 01-31-2013 02:08 PM

Wish him all the best with this contract, he deserves it. Would have loved him to have been given the chance over Lovejoy on the Pens.

IslesRock4 01-31-2013 02:09 PM

Obviously a small sample size, but pretty much all Isles fans can agree this was well deserved. He has played like a top 4 shutdown guy so far. At the worst, he's an everyday #5. Could be a very good contract for the Isles.

Oilers thought the same with Corey Potter and he played more than 6 games.

I don't want to cut anyone down here as I haven't seen him play, but most sane Gm's would've waited a tad bit longer before giving a 3 year commitment.

bigd 01-31-2013 02:17 PM

With Strait, what you see is what you get. He's played the same way throughout his career. He had a slow start this season in Wilkes because he had Mono but that looks like it's behind him now. He still has room to improve.
