Who Does Your Team Take With the #1 Pick?

MacKinnon vs. Jones has been heating up all year, but in my mind it's never been a matter of who's better. I think they've gone back and forth enough that their draft placement depends on what the needs of their respective teams are. In that spirit, given the number one pick who does your team take?

I wasn't sure whether this was the place to post this, but since there are so many discussions about who's going to go first, it seemed logical to put it here.

Pittsburgh would take Nate, definitely. He and Crosby would be dangerous for years, and the Cole Harbour connection would be legendary. We'd have to lock up Shero to make sure he doesn't draft Jones though.

I think the Canucks would/should take Jones, as we've never in our history had a franchise defenseman. But I could see an argument for either, we have no glaring need one way or another.

Darcy Regier 01-31-2013 04:51 PM

Buffalo, absolutely no idea.

I would lean towards Jones since we have Grigorenko who looks poised to be a #1 center.

I don't think any team can go wrong with either, both are legit #1 picks. 2nd pick this year is as good as first and a much easier decision.

blasted_Sabre 01-31-2013 04:51 PM

Leafs take MacKinnon.

Absolutely no question.

TheHudlinator 01-31-2013 04:52 PM

I think Calgary would take MacKinnon or Barkov.

SolidusAKA 01-31-2013 04:52 PM

Dallas takes Jones

HooliganX2 01-31-2013 04:52 PM

Jones IMO reminds me a lot of Erik Johnson. So I would pick MacKinnon easily.

Jones is basically is better at every facet of the game at the same age, the only comparison is they are american right hand blueliners.

Flyers takes Jones or at least I hope so.

I think people seem to forget how good Johnson was making statements like this.

Leafs will gladly take mackinnon

TheJuxtaposer 01-31-2013 04:59 PM

Sharks take Mackinnon easy. Mackinnon-Couture 1-2 punch down the road would be sick. Also, Mack would be able to play in our top-6 right now: Marleau-Thornton-Pavelski, Couture-Mackinnon-Havlat.

oilersfan11 01-31-2013 04:59 PM

BPA which is Jones.

Nathan Mackinnon 2nd overall

Johnson still has one of the better tool sets for a defenseman in the NHL he seems to lack hockey sense. Johnson was the #1 overall draft pick his draft year for a reason. He had an amazing set of tools.

Hedman and Tavares were debated on who would be the better player their draft year. Hedman also was know for his high skill set.

It seems like a majority of draft years there is a highly touted forward and defenseman battling to be the #1 pick. It also seems like a majority of the time the team taking the forward end up making the right decision.

People tend to have short memories and forget about how skilled the defenseman were at their ages and the next one coming up always seems to be worlds ahead of the past ones in skill sets it seems.

To be fair, Johnson's development was messed up after his injury. But I agree there's more risk in taking Jones than Mackinnon.

Gnashville 01-31-2013 05:54 PM

I'd take MacKinnon, but Polie would take Jones or trade down and take another Dman

K9 01-31-2013 06:28 PM

Leafs would take the BPA, which right now is probably Jones in their eyes. Gotta believe if there is any doubt in Jones among the scouts that Mackinnon is choice #2.

LatvianTwist 01-31-2013 06:29 PM

Jones without even thinking.

BillyShoe1721 01-31-2013 06:29 PM

The BPA, whoever that may be.

TheNudge 01-31-2013 06:31 PM

Detroit would take Jones over anyone. But wait do they need the 1st overall pick to get the best player in the draft. They could found a better player in the 7th round ;)

A1LeafNation 01-31-2013 06:31 PM

Leafs should definitely take JONES!

catters078 01-31-2013 06:36 PM

Dallas takes Jones and assembles a dam good looking blue line of the future, size and talent wise by adding Jones to oleksiak (pick 14 in 2011) and Patrick Nemeth (pick 41 in 2010)

Oleksiak will be on the team from Friday, Nemeth will be in the NHl next seasn and Jones will start immediately you would think..

Jones - 6'3
Oleksiak - 6'7
Nemeth - 6'3

Something very good to build around

TheJuxtaposer 01-31-2013 06:39 PM

Johnson and Jones share physical tools, but Jones has an INSANELY high hockey IQ. That's the distinguishing factor IMHO. Johnson's still a borderline top-2 defenseman despite missing a year of development. But yeah, Jones has the extremely high hockey IQ to supplement his elite physical tools.

JSC 01-31-2013 06:46 PM

Oilers draft Mackinnon. Then we ship Gagner for a top 4 defenseman.

Hall - RNH - Eberle
Yakupov - Mackinnon - Hemsky
