Ryan Suter and Shea Weber

How are they doing? It looks to me like they are having a pretty hard time. Suter do have four assists in 8 games but is also -6 while Weber has no points at all!

Do you think it was a mistake to part ways? Suter was by many considered the better player (but Weber is a lot more flashy), do you agree with that?

Mowerman 02-04-2013 12:32 PM

Nashville hasn't really been getting much offense from anywhere as far as I'm aware. Weber is still eating big minutes and keeping a solid +/-. Can't really say much more than that, only really know that because he's killing my fantasy team.

They are like peanuts, butter, and jell-o. You can't have one without the other. I'm surprised Weber has no points.

It's almost poetic. Weber's offensive game has suffered and Suter's defensive game has suffered. They're made to be together.

Suter is still adjusting to the system plus he's already played with 3 different defensive partners (Spurgeon, Gilbert, Brodin). Brodin seems to be playing well with him though so I hope Yeo keeps that pairing.

Really surprised at Weber's slow start. He has to be one of the biggest disappointments in the league thus far.

dre2112 02-04-2013 12:45 PM

I saw Suter play against the Ducks on Friday and he looked nothing like a top pairing defenseman

Yep.

I snagged both of them for fantasy and now I can't even find anyone willing to take them in a package trade.

Paranoid Android 02-04-2013 12:52 PM

Both are going to need time to adjust. They played together exclusively for years. Not to mention they both have fat pay checks. They'll both come around but it will take time.

HockeyThoughts 02-04-2013 12:58 PM

6 games, 8 games..even 20 games isn't going to be enough to evaluate the individual play of Shea Weber and Ryan Suter. For 7 seasons, these two defenseman formed one of the best defensive pairings in recent history -- that's roughly 574 games, played alongside one another.

Now they have signed onto equally ridiculously long 14-year and 13-year contracts -- on rival Western squads. For Weber this means new defensemen to play with at ES/PP/PK and for Suter this means new defenseman to play with at ES/PP/PK, a new system to learn, and a whole set of new teammates to play with.

By the end of this 48 game season + playoffs (assuming Nashville and Minnesota make it) we should have a reasonable look at how each defenseman is faring in their new situations. But after 8 games? It is ludicrous to honestly believe this a long enough sample-size to actually evaluate anything.

Didn't Weber wanna go to Philadelphia? Maybe his heart isn't all there yet.

No, he just wanted to get paid.

If he wanted to go to Philly, he would have signed a 1 year deal with Nashville and then signed in Philly as a UFA.

Gotta love this place sometimes.

Two weeks into a shortened season with only one week's worth of training camp, and we are to evaluate the play of two guys who essentially "grew up" together as NHL players.

Weber looks fine. The team as a whole has reverted back to the days of old when offense was a myth. Defensively I have no issues with him. He may have a bad shift/period/game, but who doesn't? Josi has been filling in the role pretty well considering this is his second NHL season, and he was just thrust into the spot formerly filled by one of the best defensemen in the game.

As far as Suter goes, I don't know. I've only seen the one game. I don't watch the Wild, and likely never really will.

points wise but he is playing classic defensive hockey. He has been a beast he just hasnt scored. Id try to watch the games before calling him the biggest disappointment.

They both wil take time to adjust to their new roles on their teams...

Really not surprising considering how much chemistry these two had in Nashville. Would it really be that surprising if neither one ever hits the highs they had playing together again?

LSnow 02-04-2013 02:02 PM

Suter has been struggling but from the few Nashville games i have seen Weber is been good, at least defensively.

Machinehead 02-04-2013 02:03 PM

Weber's gonna be fine. How exactly is he supposed to be putting up point the way they're playing?? Nobody on the Preds is scoring. But they're not gonna be scoring once a night all year. They will heat up and the points will come for Weber.

thestonedkoala 02-04-2013 02:18 PM

Suter is fine, just needs to find a stable partner.

Haha this. We are averaging 1.5 goals a game and ~20 shots a game; dead last in the NHL for both. 1.5 GF/G x 8 = 12 total goals; if Weber scores a goal next game, everyone should sing his praises for having 7.7% (1/13) of the team's total goals on the season. I still can't believe 5 of our 8 games have gone to a shootout. We're on pace for 30 shootouts in 48 games this season.

Rob Scuderi plays "classic defensive hockey."

This, 100%

Gnashville 02-04-2013 03:41 PM

Nashville has the worst offense in the NHL. How is Weber going to put up points when no one can score? He's wayyyyy down the list of Predators' issues this season.
