Boyes - How does he look so far?

Are you guys happy with what Brad Boyes has done so far in the season?

InformTheMasses 02-05-2013 08:51 PM

I'ts all in the eye of the beholder and their expectations. There are some who actually think Marty Reasoner has been playing well despite his minus 5 rating and 6 shots on goal on just 9 minutes TOI/G. For that to look good, you must have set the bar REALLY low.

Boyes has been fine I guess. He's exactly what I thought he would be. A 1 dimensional player that can finish, but has difficulty creating for himself and others. Also streaky and allergic to defense. I like complete players, so he isn't my cup of tea, but he has produced some offense.

LeapOnOver 02-05-2013 09:40 PM

Is he the player he was for ST. Louis? No.. Has he been a steal of a contract? Not really. He has however added offense and been a legitimate scoring threat so I'd say so far his play has been above average. I think he has earned a chance at the first line which he got today. It will remain to be seen if his contract becomes a steal. He's not PAP right now though...

im satisfied

A Pointed Stick 02-05-2013 10:42 PM

He has his moments, but in general Wang's plan to keep salary at league floor has yielded yet another bland addition to the club. He is on pace for 20 goals over 80 games which if we had a full season wouldn't be awful, but some of the predictions about 30 or 40 goals... THOSE posters must be pretty unhappy.

The one thing I am unhappy about, though unsurprised over, is Brad has a whopping 4 hits on the season.

You betcha, we added another Mary to our squad. Watch out Brad, you might hurt your squash arm.

Kevin27nyi 02-05-2013 11:39 PM

He's what I expected. A stop gap player who has the ability to put up decent points but lack a good defensive game.

For what I expected, he's been good. He has filled his role. I wish we could get better players but for his role, I like it.

steveat 02-06-2013 04:35 AM

put it this way..he isn't a complete and utter disappointment. Think people might have expected more, but he was on his downswing and this s a new team with a different system.

He has better hands than I thought he would have and I think once he builds some chemistry, there is potential of getting 25-35 goals. We have many other things to worry about before Boyes.

IslesZoso 02-06-2013 07:49 AM

Not terrible, but if I had my druthers, I'd have preferred that we kept PA Parenteau instead.

Felix Unger 02-06-2013 07:52 AM

I think we're seeing a preview in Boyes what we've got to look forward to in Moulson when he gets tired or unable to keep taking the punishment he takes in front of the net. Very few players can play like that for a long period of time, and most of those are meatheads.

Cheers,

Dan-o

Boyes is a right-handed Moulson. Doesnt create his own chances but is an opportunist. JT does ALL the work on that line for the most part.

PA is playing really well for the Avs with Matty D. Scoring at a pace he never had here on the Island. Watched a bit of the game on NBCNetwork the other day and he looks good. Still lacks on the defensive side, but hes there to put up points and he is

Watched one of his games this season as well and he looks good, just like last season. We really should have held onto him and I knew it was a huge mistake when it happened. This team lacks a 2nd solid Winger for JT that is pretty desperately needed, we can't just keep plugging a hole and switching it up constantly.

The Underboss 02-06-2013 11:59 AM

He's what I expected so far.

xECK29x 02-06-2013 12:04 PM

He is fine for the money.

thats Him to a T. we knew what we were getting so no complaints here.

Brooklanders* 02-06-2013 06:56 PM

I like Boyes better than PA and neither are spectacular nor good defensive players

rikker 02-08-2013 07:38 AM

i think he's a decent pick up for deeper pools. i wasn't sure where he fit, but if he's going to get some time with JT, he's worth a gamble.

to me, he's a place holder. but to be honest, that's what i thought of Parenteau the first year or two.

essentially a low risk, high reward, PP specialist... for now.

SpeedDemon 02-09-2013 01:38 PM

I'd say he's okay. not a total bust but he's more of a power forward or a one-on-one guy.

He's not a playmaker so playing him with Tavares and Moulson is pointless. (not that Okposo's been doing any better.)

He's not a speedster either so playing him with Nielsen and Grabner is also a poor decision. (Why didn't they trade for Hansen?)

The Isles are not the type of team he can excel with.

Dutch Frost 02-10-2013 12:37 AM

Id rather have PAP, Hell we could of had PAP and still signed Boyes.

Terrible move by this Mickey Mouse organization.. PAP has 7 goals and 2 assists in 10 games and is a +5 overall.

He's making less than half the average NHL salary. Problem is, the Isles signed him to play in the top 6. Legitimate top 6 players don't make $1m.

IslesNorway 02-10-2013 06:06 AM

Boyes is okay but he's not a top line player. Realistically he should be playing on the 3rd line if the Isles were remotely good.

LotteryForLife* 02-14-2013 10:10 PM

Brad Boyes

Islander fans should start talking about this guy more and more over the next few weeks. He's fitting in fairly well with JT and should only get better the more the two play together but Garth has found some gold early with this guy. I really like his offensive game

steveat 02-15-2013 05:13 AM

I agree ..10 points in 13 games is nothing to laugh at.

Brooklanders* 02-15-2013 08:56 AM

Boyes has played very well all season long and is a better defensive player than PA. PA is not going to continue scoring goals at the current pace. I am very happy for Parentau because he is a great guy and a solid player but I dont think PA is a much better fit than Boyes. Instead of resigning PA I would have rather seen the NYI go after Semin long term

Really? I guess I don't see that.

Boyes is better aspects certain of the game. He's more patient, more creative, and has a better shot (although I hope he hits the net more regularly).

But for a guy with some size, man does he shy away from contact. His idea of finishing his checks is love-tapping the defender with his buttock.

Cheers,

Dan-o
