Timonen will sign one year (6M) extension with Flyers

Sam Carchidi ‏@BroadStBull

#Flyers will sign Timonen to a one-year $6M extension, source confirms.

SolidSnakeUS 02-06-2013 09:27 PM

It's pricy, but as we are, we need him, and yes, we can fit it in for next year.

Billy Mays Here 02-06-2013 09:29 PM

A little expensive but Timonen deserves it. He's done a lot for Philly.

AirheadPete 02-06-2013 09:30 PM

really smart move for the flyers. timonen is an integral part of that backend and is criminally underrated IMO. good to lock him up for another year then decide from there.

Dark Knight 02-06-2013 09:30 PM

I don't think he's a $6M player anymore.

I don't think he is either, but next season will have an artificially higher salary cap than it would otherwise due to the CBA compromises. Lessens the effect of "overpaying" for another year.

It's pricey. I figured he would go for $5M.

GKJ 02-06-2013 09:37 PM

Flyers didn't have a choice. If he would have left, there was no one to replace him. They are desperate for a puck-moving defenseman, and the #1 guy on the market was already on the roster. Guess what happens in that scenario.

They re-sign said player.

Can't complain at all. He's such a valuable player to this team. Veteran leader, great PMD, and PP QB.

laundryman 02-06-2013 09:43 PM

I really expected him to retire after this year, but I guess he's always been a warrior.

Tripod 02-06-2013 09:44 PM

Carle just got $5.5 mill
Wideman got 5.25 mill
Kimmo is not worth the 6 anymore...but it is what a UFA D man can get now especially if he is the best one available. Was hoping for a team friendly 4 mill :)

Edler got 5 :handclap:

Avs44 02-06-2013 09:52 PM

But much...but the Flyers need him. I don't think they could have afforded to lose him this year

Makes sense. Flyers are worse without him and its better to lock him up. I think they need a established top 3 D-man to become real threats though.

TorstenFrings 02-06-2013 09:56 PM

They need him in a bad way, so the $6m are an expression of that, but it is for one year, so it could always be a lot worse.

And I agree that Edler's is a great deal. I am almost willing to bet that if Edler didn't sign, Philly woudld have been trading for his rights and then offering the Kimmo $

Yep. The cost of good defensemen doesn't go down

BROOKLYnKNIGHTS 02-06-2013 10:03 PM

Not sure why he signs a one year deal

Bubbles 02-06-2013 10:04 PM

Overpaid by 1.5-2 million IMO.

Because of stupid owners and GMs inflated the values by bidding

Because he is 37 and getting close to retirement?

DJENTLEMAN 02-06-2013 10:14 PM

Smart move by Philly to lock him up well before July 1st or even the months approaching July.

Wingerz 02-06-2013 10:22 PM

Ouch. At least it's only for 1 year.

Alchemy 02-06-2013 10:30 PM

Under appreciated and underrated.
