Berger: Leafs, Sens Targeting Stephen Weiss

Leaving it as a speculation. Not sure the credibility.

Howard Berger @ Berger_BYTES Source tells me today #Leafs and #Senators have approached Florida about centre Stephen Weiss. Would look superb on either team.

Marty Straka 02-07-2013 12:10 PM

Its been speculated for a while now that the sens would be interested in Weiss... I for one would definitely love the move.. could slot in as #1 or #2 with Turris while we wait for Spezza to come back and then Slot in as our #2-3 when he's back to have 3 solid scoring lines.

Liferleafer 02-07-2013 12:10 PM

Well....color me intrigued.

supercilious 02-07-2013 12:10 PM

Bozak + Kulemin for Weiss + 3rd

dannyboy8920 02-07-2013 12:10 PM

Please take him Ottawa.

He is an upgrade, sure. But I don't see him in our future; Just another patch work, like always.

Sidney the Kidney 02-07-2013 12:11 PM

Is Weiss really that #1 center Toronto is after, though? Don't get me wrong, I like him as a player. But isn't he more like what the Leafs already have in Grabovski (a good 2nd line center), rather than a legitimate top line center?

Why would the leafs go for Weiss, doesn't really fit the building slowly through the draft idea.

If we do go for him, then I guess any hopes of a legit rebuild are gone. I don't see how Nonis thinks we're going to become a legit playoff team with out completely restarting our defensive group, and moving out these bad contracts.

I just hope it's not Kadri as the piece going back.

Im thinking something along the lines of Stone/Ceci + Bishop gets er done.

Kadri would never go back

Weiss is a good player and all, but his career high is 61 points

He may be #1C by default in FLA, but hes about as #1 as Grabovski tbh

Schenn 02-07-2013 12:14 PM

Never really been a Weiss fan. Depends on the price.

without an extension in place that maybe too rich for my blood.

I really hope not.

But look at our team history.

Rask for Raycroft
1st + Boyes for Nolan (1st got packaged to nab Couture)
2x 1st + 2nd for Kessel (we know how that turned out)

We keep selling picks, young guys.

Leafs can't be targeting Weiss. Majority of fan base, per another thread on this forum, insists that he is over-rated and not a #1 center.

Bozak and Kulemin won't get you Weiss. Forget the 3rd. Florida can do better.

Leafs at Knight 02-07-2013 12:20 PM

Pass.

Ugh too much. I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm sure he'll return something similar, but that's still a lot.

SprDaVE 02-07-2013 12:21 PM

Obviously it all depends on the price but I doubt the Leafs are that interested, especially not with the way Kadri has been playing.

He'd be a solid upgrade over Bozak though. And I like Bozak quite a bit.

If Weiss were NOT an impending UFA, then I think Kadri would be in play.

Only way Weiss moves is if he basically tells Florida he is not coming back. Tallon has said publically he will not deal Weiss, he will try to re-sign him, though George Richards speculates that Tallon can not let him go for nothing, like he did last year with Jason Garrison.

That said, Weiss for Kessel?

Ouch... pass for a pending UFA.

I would do that with an extension in place though. Probably would give more even.

Not the same deal. The 1st in the Nolan deal turn into the 21st pick(Mark Stuart) in the 03 draft, The pick that was moved that help them get Couture, Came via the Toskala trade(1st, 2nd, 4th).

Not even close.

Coolburn 02-07-2013 12:28 PM

Weiss won't even be considered to be put on the trade market (if at all) until the Panthers are clearly out of the playoff picture and thats not in the 3rd week of the season. So doesnt matter if those teams are targeting him or not unless they plan on waiting another 6-8 weeks.

Two legit 2C's puts you in a better position than a lot of teams.
