Devils poised to take over Atlantic?

For years people have predicted the demise of the New Jersey Devils. They won’t be the same team after Scott Stevens retires, or with Scott Niedermayer in Anaheim, the Devils system will start to show leaks. The experts claimed that they couldn’t replace Bobby Holik, or Scott Gomez, or Brian Rafalski. We’ve seen it all through the years, and through it all the Devils just keep on being a perennial contender in the NHL’s Eastern Conference.
Devils vs Penguins this weekend with back to back games for the first in the Atlantic and first in the East. Most pundits and even The Hockey News had them pegged being a lot worse than this. Is this just the early season surprise or for real?

Rob Nieds work ethic 02-08-2013 02:31 PM

Eternal underdogs, and we like it that way.

HenriquesJawLine 02-08-2013 02:32 PM

We're for real but i'm not expecting much against the Penguins, we've never matched up well with them. Probably the only Atlantic division team we've consistently struggled against

NjDevsRR 02-08-2013 02:32 PM

Shhh. Dont say anything, we like being unnoticed and ridiculed.:sarcasm:

As a born and bred New Jerseyan who decided to be a Ranger fan as a child, the number one thing that I have learned about hockey during my life is that the Devils will be a good team no matter what.

It is infuriating, mind boggling, and all around sucky, but it is a fact of life that I have learned to deal with. :pout:

metalan2 02-08-2013 02:32 PM

Pens will sweep them this weekend and everyone in NJ will go into panic mode, even though they shouldn't.

HarrisonFord 02-08-2013 02:33 PM

Got rid of Parise, Brodeur got another year older, and yet they are still 6-1-3. Pretty impressive

Cheddabombs 02-08-2013 02:33 PM

Wow thanks. First overall pick here we come :sarcasm:

GM17* 02-08-2013 02:39 PM

Great. Now EVERYBODY knows

Also, I've got Crosby Elias and Brodeur in my pool, which (by the laws of hockey pools) means that the Pens will win both games 10-9 with Crosby 0 pts, -9 + Elias -10 and Brodeur will get yanked in the first after letting in all 10 goals

Tasty Biscuits 02-08-2013 03:05 PM

Devils will probably be able to expose the probable lack of Letang much better than the Caps. Should be good games.

I'm smelling a split this weekend. I would certainly take it as a Devils fan. The Pens are playing great hockey.

Yea me too. I'm just saying after the last Pens loss your board was in full on panic mode, can't imagine after two in a row. But such is life in all fan bases.

A lot of it had to do with coming off a very sloppy OT loss against the Islanders prior to that game. Devils weren't looking good during that stretch and it was a bit concerning. The last 3 games have definitely calmed the nerves, though.

Looking forward to how the Greene-Larsson pairing handles Crosby/Malkin this weekend.

Everyone wanted Volchenkov's head on a platter. Made me a sad guy and changed my user name so I didn't look like a huge homer defending him.

I'd be happy with a split.

Devils Trap 02-08-2013 03:26 PM

God Damnit. I liked being under the radar.

Pens games are always tough. I would be happy with a split , and ecstatic if we could sweep

Stevens 4 02-08-2013 03:30 PM

Death, taxes, and the New Jersey Devils.

Pens have been playing great though, this will be a tough home and home.

You not that old then........ from 1982 to 1992 with the exception of 1988 wasn't that easy to live through as a Devil fan :)

WVP 02-08-2013 03:35 PM

No Letang on Saturday.

Shouldn't be, but I am still surprised to see the Devils this good year after year when they keep losing key players.

L0STEDT* 02-08-2013 03:36 PM

With Brodeur in net, you can do a lot of things.

Dying Alive 02-08-2013 03:36 PM

So everyone writes off the Devils and they turn out to be solid? Must be any hockey season in recent memory.

TOML 02-08-2013 03:37 PM

Hmm... Don't remember them being a powerhouse with Chris Terreri in net.

TOML

Luigi Lemieux 02-08-2013 03:38 PM

Maybe, but their only regulation loss was a 5-1 pounding by the pens.

useless 02-08-2013 03:39 PM

All kinds of weird things happen early in shortened seasons. They will fall back down by the end of it.

Jaded-Fan 02-08-2013 03:41 PM

I agree completely.

Pens are the underdogs.

begbeee 02-08-2013 03:43 PM

Ouh, so suddenly we're good because of Brodeur? Wasn't it like before last year playoffs that Brodeur is old, done and washed up in like one such thread per a week?
