Euro Hockey Tour turns to European Championship with 16 Teams (from 2014 on)

IIHF will reform the Euro Hockey Tour, the value of the teams will be raised from 4 to 16. the teams will be splitted up in 4 groups and they will be play 4 tourneys in November / December / February & April.

The Tourney will also change his name from Euro Hockey Tour to "Ice Hockey European Championship" (from 2014 on).

More details will be released until the 25th of february.

What you think, good or bad idea?

cska78 02-09-2013 02:40 PM

it would be good for lower level teams to see Russ, SWE, CZE, and Finns of the world, as for the fans fo this nations - it will be boring.

vorky 02-09-2013 02:41 PM

EHT needs to be reformed, but I am not sure if this formula is ideal.

We still would have 4 international breaks of 7 days each. That is almost a month, leagues (including play offs) can be played only 7 months. Not a solution for KHL, NHL has 7 months for regular season! Swedes/Finns want to create Champions League. The hell, when do they want to play it?

Why European Championship every year? I can imagine it every second year, but not every year.

FIFA has 4 day international breaks. No problem. Why does hockey need 7-10 breaks for NT?

russianhockey 02-09-2013 02:59 PM

i hope we will get at least a tourney either in germany, switzerland, france oder austria. i also dont really like that idea, but its better than the tourney with always the same 4 teams.

Gaps 02-09-2013 03:25 PM

What will this mean in regards to the number of games played by each team? Because at least in Finland the tournaments are mostly used to evaluate possible candidates for the next WC. Playing 12 games altogether is just the perfect amount, if not too much. How many games would we be talking about with this format?

Also, would this mean that each group would get one of the "Big 4" teams or would those four countries simply form one group and play each other like they do now?

If that is the format I think it's too much. Not sure where the golden balance is, but it seems like right now they are taking off too much time from reg leagues.

KRM 02-09-2013 06:36 PM

Any change to the EHT is a good change. Also, good overall for hockey in Europe if teams like Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Latvia, etc get to compete with the top level teams more than just at the Olympics.

But yea, I'd also like to see shorter national team breaks.

boris4c 02-10-2013 03:20 AM

Excellent idea.

The current qualifying tournament has shown that even the lower teams such as Slovenia or Great Britain can compete with the others, even though it's still a long way before they can compete against the usual EHT participants.

However, the current version of the IIHF World Championships includes 16 teams, of which 14 are from Europe, so it's not like there are no opportunities for them to face each other at that time.

TheFatOne 02-10-2013 03:20 AM

I like it. 16 teams?

sweden, finland, czech, russia, slovakia, germany, switzerland, denmark, norway, lativa, belarus, france, austria, slovenia, kazakhstan, hungary.

russianhockey 02-10-2013 04:27 AM

Valeri Fesyuk explains the the European Championship

ficohok* 02-10-2013 05:31 AM

So looks like that Ice hockey will be only team sport that have both european and world championship in one season :D

Mr Writer 02-10-2013 05:42 AM

Sounds like a great idea to me; maybe it can replace the World Championships and that way Canada and the United States don't have to bother with showing up anymore. All we need is a World Cup (1 every four years) and the Olympics.

Just kidding on the WHC (kind of) I'm not that anti-WHC as some N.Americans are, but it wouldn't bother me one bit if the World Championships morphed into a Euro-Championship, as I prefer the NHL playoffs anyway.

What a joke, watching czhech and russia is boring enough, but now they have to add to that?

They should just skip this and recreate the nordic trophy for sweden danmark norway finland.

So what good is that for the rest of Europe? You know the world doesn't rotate around Scandinavia.

LiveeviL 02-10-2013 05:57 AM

Good to get rid of all these meaningless tournaments.
I see this as 100% positive. I gladly watch France -Hungary if it means that it promotes the sport in Europe.

No one stopping other countries from making a tournament of their own, im talking about sweden pulling out and creating a tournament that might actually be worth putting on the TV for if your a swede. The free TV i might add.

You sure about Kazahstan ? I know their club Torpedo Kamenogorsk used to play at Continental cup, but at same time their national team played at Asian games IIRC !?

They have a team in KHL. They play in the European sector in football.

Where would they play hockey? Together with Japan and Korea? Not likely.

MaxV 02-10-2013 10:55 AM

Kazakhstan plays soccer as a European Nation, it probably will in hockey also.

Dosing, so watching Russia or Czech is boring for you, but you would relish the idea of watching Denmark or Norway? Ooooookay.

vorky 02-10-2013 11:27 AM

there are 2 proposals, one made by national federations of EHT coutries and one by group which was created after Barcelona´s meeting. It is goal is to find new model of club´s competitions in Europe (and change the NT calendar)

I will never watch EHT version 2 as a Finnish fan, I guarantee it. EHT v1 games are boring enough

joe89 02-10-2013 11:23 PM

I've lost almost all interest in EHT, so I cannot imagine what the interest is like for those who are casual hockey fans.

I'd say this sounds suiting in this day and age. Look at the Olympic qualifiers. Fine, NHL players were missing but to see Slovenia, France, Kazakstan, Austria etc. do well makes me feel like it is time to widen the horizon a bit. If you can't get the interest going with current format, at least make it into something positive for the sport. I'm dead tired of watching the same four teams play each other over and over, who also know each other inside out. I'll take the occasional 7-0 game just to see Sweden play some "new" countries, and hopefully it gives them a nice bump to their hockey program.
