Helene St. James: Helene St. James: Red Wings' injuries provide opportunities for good stories

Red Wings goaltender Jimmy Howard watched Petr Mrazek as he talked to journalists, and laughed.

"He hasn't stopped holding court since yesterday," Howard said. "Look at him."

Look at Mrazek, look at Brian Lashoff, look at Tomas Tatar. And look at Damien Brunner, too.

The Wings hit the quarter point of the lockout-shortened season this afternoon when they host the defending Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings. Saturday's 2-1 victory over the Edmonton Oilers improved the Wings to 6-4-1, keeping them in the middle of the nascent playoff picture in the Western Conference.

The Wings have accomplished this even as they've gone through so many injuries. From losing forward Jan Mursak during opening night in St. Louis to losing defenseman Jonathan Ericsson during practice the next day to losing defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo in Game 2, and defenseman Ian White in Game 3, players have dropped like dominoes. It got so bad the Wings had to sign a fresh body three days after the season began.

All the injuries -- and they include top-four defenseman Brendan Smith, third-line center Darren Helm, second-line winger Mikael Samuelsson, backup goaltender Jonas Gustavsson and most recently, top-six forward Todd Bertuzzi -- have created opportunities, opportunities that have become good stories.

Is starting goalie confirmed? i've got kind of hopes Mrazek can get another experience.

Yes, was confirmed right after the game yesterday.

Excellent work Shoalzie.

Cleary did not look too bad with Fil and Datsyuk yesterday. I agree it seems he's being rewarded for basically being awful all year, but hopefully he can contribute again today.

The kids are impressing, this would be a very nice weekend for us to come away with two wins.

GO WINGS!!

mindfly 02-10-2013 09:41 AM

Gutted that Mrazek doesn't get his chance he so deserved.

Drama Queen....

last_sd 02-10-2013 10:10 AM

Why not play Mrazek and give Howard break on back-to-back game?

Shoalzie 02-10-2013 10:55 AM

They don't play again until Wednesday so Howard will get his rest after today. I think you stick with the lineup from yesterday because this is a classic letdown spot. Second game in a less than 24 hours against the struggling (and banged up on defense) defending champs on your own ice. You don't want to be the team that let the Kings up from the canvas...keep 'em down and move on. I think they can learn from the Calgary game.

WingedWheel1987 02-10-2013 11:35 AM

Wings need to take care of business at home. I dont care if it's on the wrong end of a B2B.

Vladdy84 02-10-2013 11:43 AM

Must win.

3-2 Wings.

Would be nice if Jimmy can actually steal a game for us for once.

Agree. Time to show they can bring it consistently. Played a rather lackluster St Louis and yesterday was a good game. Want to see another good one today.

Wish Mrazek was in, its one of those few games that actually start at decent time for us in Europe, would love to see him live... sigh

P U L L H A R D 02-10-2013 12:22 PM

Missed the game yesterday :( Pumped to see this one. Kings are a good test for our forwards, I think. Struggling though they may be, scoring on them is never the easiest thing to do.

patekilla 02-10-2013 12:30 PM

Would have like to see Mrazek in but Howie is always pretty solid. But for that one softie every couple games but what goalie doesn't.

Harnessed in Slums 02-10-2013 12:30 PM

I hope Babs has the hook ready if Jimmah and the team look like they aren't ready to go at puck drop. With it being an early game plus back to back this game might require Babcock make some quick adjustments on the fly.

InjuredChoker 02-10-2013 12:32 PM

Here we go, expecting at least one point, hoping for two.

f1seb 02-10-2013 12:33 PM

We're "Clearly" going to win this game.:sarcasm:

InjuredChoker 02-10-2013 12:33 PM

I'd have liked to see Mrazek too but have no issue with Howard starting.

waltdetroit 02-10-2013 12:37 PM

Didn't realize that when Mikael Samuelsson strained his groin, he fractured his jaw

Chevrier 02-10-2013 12:37 PM

Well, the last two times I remember watching the Wings play the Kings, the first they pretty much handled them, did their thing, believe Wings won. The second one was probs around last March and the Kings took it to the Wings and it generally about when they went on that massive run all the way to the Cup.

Here's to hoping we face that first team again. Their scoring is spread out right now, but they shouldn't be taken lightly. Glad Howard's in goal, as much as it could be cool to see Mrazek, I prefer this sorta' game to go to Howard for so many more reasons than just wanting to see Mrazek get another in there.

InjuredChoker 02-10-2013 12:38 PM

And Doc on booth. Awesome.

ProPAIN 02-10-2013 12:38 PM

Gamecenter is blacked out for me. :banghead:

SoupGuru 02-10-2013 12:39 PM

Cleary with the hatty, book it.

Harnessed in Slums 02-10-2013 12:40 PM

Wings sleepwalking early. :shakehead

SoupGuru 02-10-2013 12:40 PM

Looking pretty shaky so far. Has the puck even been in the opposing zone once?
