Olympics 2014 @ Sochi, Toughest Group?

Group A - United States, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia.

Group B - Canada, Finland, Norway, Austria

Group C - Sweden, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Latvia

Looking at the groups, I'd have to say group A should be the most competitive. I think most would agree the US and Russia are in the top 4 for best rosters heading to Sochi, and Slovakia has a handful of players that are very good players in the NHL, compared to Norway which has none and Switzerland which has some NHL players but no proven stars yet. Switzerland does always seem to play very well as a team though despite this.

I forgot to check the add poll option, if a MOD could add one that'd be great, thanks.

Group A's a toughie.

MastuhNinks 02-10-2013 03:32 PM

Group A has two top-tier teams and a 2nd-tier team that finished 4th last year and nearly took Canada to OT in the semi-finals.

Group AINEC.

VinnyC 02-10-2013 03:34 PM

I think C is the toughest, SWI and LAT have upset potential. A is better overall, but Slovenia will almost certainly be a punching bag.

I'll go out on a limb and say Group C. Underrated nation in Switzerland who always gives the Top 5 a solid run for their money. I wouldn't be surprised at all if they were able to sneak into the medal round.

Giant killer.. yes we will be punching bag.. but big teams will still need to find ways to win... they will need to be aware to NOT lose any points... (see qualification for Sochi..)

The USA/Russia/Slovakia group is clearly the group of death.

Group C isn't far behind - I think Switzerland is clearly ahead of any non top-7 country.

Canada has by far the easiest draw - it would be a disaster if we lost to either Norway or Austria.

Machinehead 02-10-2013 04:32 PM

Went with group C.

It's between A and C because both groups have 3 of the big 8, but as far as the weak link goes, Latvia is vastly superior to Slovenia.

Gotta hope Kopitar can carry the offence and Robert Kristan has a brilliant performance ... and maybe you can steal a game ...

Seriously though, Slovenes should be very proud of their team even getting to the Olympics. Wasn't expecting them to even qualify, congrats! Always nice to see new teams in the Olympics!

Dellstrom 02-10-2013 05:17 PM

USA/Slovakia/Russia are all potential medal teams. I'd go as far as saying potential Gold teams. Slovenia is just there.

Canada is the favorite, and Finland has medal potential, but A is definitely tougher.

Sweden could take a medal and Czech Republic is pretty high up there, could medal. Switzerland is a tough team, especially if you underestimate them. Latvia is again, kind of there.

Big 8 doesn't exist (yet), big 7 does. Therefore A is the hardest

stlblues9 02-10-2013 10:33 PM

I don't usually follow International hockey outside of the big tournaments, but how did Austria and Slovenia get into the Olympics? How did Germany not make it over these teams?

Christmas Izzy 02-10-2013 11:10 PM

A.

Canada had better finish atop their group

Only the top 9 seeds, following the 2012 World Championships, are guaranteed a berth at the Olympics. Coming into this year's qualifying tournaments, they were (in order): Russia, Finland, Czech Republic, Sweden, Canada, Slovakia, USA, Norway and Switzerland.

Seeds 10 through 12 (Germany, Latvia and Denmark) then hosted a prequalification tournament. Three groups of four teams play a three game round robin, the winners of each group earn qualification to Sochi. The results are as follows:

Group D: Austria, Germany, Italy, Netherlands
Group E: Latvia, Kazakhstan, France, Great Britain
Group F: Slovenia, Belarus, Denmark, Ukraine

On the final day, needed only a point to gain qualification, Austria lost to Germany in overtime. That would be why the Germans failed to qualify.

Cory Trevor 02-11-2013 01:23 AM

And Canada with a walk into the next round...

Group A is going to be ridiculous. I should be in Europe at that time. Find a place that has a ferry boats from Varna to Sochi. It's about 600 miles by boat or 1300 miles by car.
Any other Muricans wanna take an adventure?
