Look at Toronto...

They had a coach that didn't play their type of game: Wilson.

Now they have a coach that plays their type of game: Carlyle.

Now look at Philadelphia...

We have a coach that doesn't play our type of game: Laviolette.

Now they need to get a coach that plays our type of game: Who ?????

1) Fire Laviolette, hire a coach like Carlyle.

2) Build a team like the current Bruins or Leafs.

3) Play Flyers hockey.

dats81 02-11-2013 05:46 AM

Let's wait until Toronto has won a cup, or at least qualified fo the playoffs before we pick them as our role model.

RoDu 02-11-2013 06:19 AM

What is our type of game?

BackWithaVengeance 02-11-2013 06:25 AM

Next year IF we buy out Briere and sign Perry or trade for his rights it will be so much more Flyers hockey again. I'd be very surprised if Holmgren won't at least try to get him.

A top-9 with Hartnell, Simmonds, B.Schenn and Perry would do a lot of damage. And Score :naughty:

Still undecided if it is a good idea to let Mr. Playoff go.

You want to model our team off the Maple Leafs....

RussianRocket10 02-11-2013 07:08 AM

Yeah not exactly a perfect model...

Morlu 02-11-2013 07:15 AM

I think the OP just meant the toughness model. Leafs have gotten bigger and tougher to avoid embarrassment at the hands of Boston.

Mid 90s was when Leafs were successful and they were known as the Black n Blue Leafs, I think they are trying to become v2.0

1865 02-11-2013 07:23 AM

Look at Toronto, a team that manages to do almost everything wrong.

JDinkalage Morgoone 02-11-2013 08:42 AM

Flyers (5-5-1) and Toronto (7-5-0). If the Flyers had a real coach they could have two more wins.

ORYX 02-11-2013 09:02 AM

I'd like to know if the same people who think the Flyers should Fire Lavy think the Rangers should fire Torts, The kings should fire Sutter, Detroit fire Babcock, etc?

6 months ago people were singing praises, now, 10 games into a new season, one which the roster has been down graded from the previous season and decimated with injuries to key players, we should fire the coach and pursue the same team model as a team who didnt qualify for the playoffs since before the last lockout in 2004?

Okay....

Okay....

Not everyone who thinks lazy needs to be replaced think they should model themselves after the leafs. In fact I think most wold say the opposite. And 6 months ago there was plenty of lavy firing talk amongst he fans on here, where have you been.

This thread is about firing the coach and following the leafs way. Of course not everyone who wishes Lavy fired will think that...but again, thats the topic of this thread is it not?

This team has an identity crisis, one which changing the man behind the bench isnt going to fix, but the man who dictates on ice personel can.

Lavy has to ask players to be players they arent, never have been, and will never be. The Defense blows, it consists of Timonen who is no longer a top pair player, Schenn who is not a top pair player, Coburn who is a nice number 2, Mesz who is a number 5 on a good team, and a plethora of #7's in Lilja, Walker, Gervais, Foster, etc.

because of this defensive ineptitude, the forwards who would ideally be trying to generate offensive rushes and chances out of the defensive zone, are covering, and just chipping the puck out. Why? Because they cant take a chance knowing that the two guys between themselves and their goalie BLOW!

You bring in a capable D-man to anchor this team and just you watch the offensive players start to worry about scoring the goals instead of preventing them.

Lavy has them working as a very defensive unit right now, smothering the offense because he simply has no choice.

Well at least he's adjusted somewhat and yes out of necessity. You can't win a horse race without horses or at least horses that are lame. Losing Carle didn't help and not being able to get Weber or Suter to fill Pronger's skates has really killed us and finding a franchise D man is going to be almost impossible although there are a lot of them now developing on various teams and they won't be going anywhere anytime soon...not unless we want to mortgage our future again. Bottom line..Flyers have to start building their D through the draft like freakin Nashville does. Problem is we have to wait and Flyers have no patience with that....look at Pitkanen...became a goat here and now he's pretty solid with Carolina.

Lavi is fine. Defense is fine. Forwards will be fine.

CharlieGirl 02-11-2013 10:24 AM

The Leafs, seriously? That's the best example you could find???

Please don't even start with this idea.

I like your optimism. We have what, till hockey or the world goes extinct for us to win a cup right? Plenty of time. It will come. People got to relax! ;)

But seriously, there are holes on this team that need to be fixed before everything is fine.

It is kind of Laff-able....

More shocking than Pope Benedict's resignation....

This.

Once Giroux kicks his ass back into scoring gear, he will be up there with the rest of the team.

If anyone is guaranteed to pull out of a scoring slump on this team, it's Giroux.

All the other forwards have slowly jumped back into scoring rhythm it seems.

LuigiStone* 02-11-2013 10:47 AM

OK, maybe the leafs were a bad example in a way. But what I meant was that they got a good coach, that likes his team to play a tough brand of hockey, and when they play like that, they win.

And that kind of hockey is Flyers hockey, unfortunately Laviolette does not understand Flyers hockey.

Get someone like Carlyle, and then get players like Clowe, Lucic, Neil, Carkner and even a guy like Orr. And let them play Flyers hockey.

Keep the top players like Giroux and of course tough players like Hartnell, Simmonds, Rinaldo and maybe Sestito. Get rid of Shelley because he is too old and not nasty enough. Then get rid of guys like Fedotenko and replace them with bangers. Then you obviously need some nasty defencemen to replace the likes of Pronger.

Keep the skilled guys and replace the average guys with tough nasty players that you hate to play against. That is Flyers hockey.

Which hasnt won in 30-40 years. But I think we had this conversation before where youd rather see Flyers hockey and lose then the current NHL skilled hockey and win. Oh well...

I thought Flyers hockey was overwhelming forecheck and physicality in the corners and along the end boards.

We're plenty physical.

Would you rather our lineup be populated by fighters? ...Because playing physical and finishing checks is much easier if you can skate.

FreshPerspective 02-11-2013 10:54 AM

I got an idea..ask Clarke to be the GM again and get Hitchcock for Giroux..I'd love a redux of the season that shall never be mentioned ! We need more Hatchers and Rathjes...:shakehead

Lavy's system worked pretty well in 2010 despite not being "Flyers Hockey"

CyborgLindros 02-11-2013 11:37 AM

Oh for the love of god we haven't missed the playoffs since "the season that shall not be discussed." and have been in the finals with Lavi at the helm. This teams growing they could put a huge run together for the foreseeable future, of course assuming quite a few things (health, keeping the young core etc) and not to mention our "slow start" this season has us going into the game tonight in a 3 way tie for 9th place and ONE point out of the playoffs.
