Is Mario Lemieux a bit overrated?

In his 1995-96 and 2000-01 Stats - close to 50% of his total Goals and Assists came from the POWERPLAY - not that impressive when you look at the whole picture.

If you look in the top ES Goal Scoring Seasons - Lemieux is not even in the top 10.

In fact he has only led the league ONCE in ES GOALS!

Also All his His International stats are average (except for the 87' playing with Gretzky and the ref's)

Bergeron47 02-13-2013 06:55 PM

Ya, he was a pretty m'eh player

NyQuil 02-13-2013 06:55 PM

It's a good thing that the powerplay is an important part of hockey.

I saw him torch the Senators for 5 points when he was old in his post-cancer form.

Joe Sakic 02-13-2013 06:56 PM

That's actually pretty interesting and a good find on your part, but it doesn't change my opinion on him.

Kiss 02-13-2013 06:56 PM

Hey, don't drop Mike, he's a cool guy..

Thepainter 02-13-2013 06:56 PM

He was awful

Sh00terMcGavin 02-13-2013 06:56 PM

We should have traded him for a 7th rounder when we had the chance.

Scottrockztheworld* 02-13-2013 06:57 PM

blasphemy!

THEALLKNOWING* 02-13-2013 06:57 PM

He was better than Gretzky.

Smoke 02-13-2013 06:57 PM

How much is a bit?

kmad 02-13-2013 06:57 PM

I heard Bobby Orr had terrible relative CORSI. He's a dud!

NyQuil 02-13-2013 06:58 PM

Maybe he's an overrated dresser.

Phu 02-13-2013 06:58 PM

or did other teams just take a lot of penalties trying to defend him?

dahrougem2 02-13-2013 06:59 PM

Sorry man I forgot that powerplays weren't part of the game? The fact that he could score so much on the powerplay just goes to show that he will score if you make a mistake. He's not overrated at all, he is one of the top 5 players in the history of this game, along with, in my opinion, Wayne Gretzky, Bobby Orr, Maurice Richard, and Patrick Roy. Legends, you cannot deny what Lemieux accomplished. He is the ONLY player to have ever even come close to 200 points besides Gretzky, how can he be overrated? Give your head a shake. If the guy was Russian or American or Swedish or whatever and had the exact same career he'd still be thought of in the exact same way

Qward 02-13-2013 06:59 PM

This is a problem with people that are too young to have watched a player play.

Dado 02-13-2013 07:00 PM

Mike Bossy only led the league once. One of the greatest snipers, ever.

Guy Lafleur only managed it one time more than Mario, and that's despite being on a team that won, like, 47 cups in a row.

Oh, lookey, Phil Esposito also only did it once more than Mario.

Captain Saku 02-13-2013 07:00 PM

He was underrated if anything.

Sometimes he's taken out of the discussion of the top 2 player of all time and this bugs me very much.

Bobby Orr played in a garage league with no Soviets or Europeans - like 95% Canadian league - and There was the WHA (who beat the NHL more often)

Lomes 02-13-2013 07:02 PM

As someone who actually watched him play and is aware of his all his other attributes, no, he is not overrated. It's incredible that anyone could even think that. Absurd.

This post sounds like it's serious.

Moosie 02-13-2013 07:04 PM

No way is Mario as a player overrated. He was dominant and so graceful. If not for his health issues, he could have rivaled Gretzky on the top of the all time NHL scoring list. On the other hand, as an owner Mario could be overrated.

Zaffy 02-13-2013 07:04 PM

He's unarguably in the top 5 best players of all time, and it can be argued that he's #1. So no, not over rated.

King Woodballs 02-13-2013 07:04 PM

Still top 5 all time

gja 02-13-2013 07:05 PM

Your post proves why Mario was the greatest powerplay threat in hockey history. It doesn't prove that he was overrated.

Nothing makes me feel older that young kids trying to use stats to say that the most gifted player of my lifetime was overrated. Yeeesh.
