Phil Kessel vs PK Subban

Who would you take to start your franchise if you were rebuilding.
Take into account age, contract, etc.

Blind Gardien 02-19-2013 03:04 PM

Kessel would be UFA after next season, so I don't see how you can really make a comparison when taking contracts into account? He could be 1 year and gone, which would be a risky way to start your franchise, whereas Subban is at least an RFA you have control over.

That aside, pretending contracts aren't an issue, as a Habs fan I would easily take Subban. He brings a perfect combination of offensive ability/upside and defensive execution, also with a very marketable personality for my new franchise. Kessel's goal-scoring would be equally valuable on the ice, but more easily replaced with a committee approach if I had to resort to that, whereas a top-minutes defenseman is harder to come by.

MessierII 02-19-2013 03:11 PM

PK for sure. Legit top D man with a well rounded game.

Nicko999 02-19-2013 03:13 PM

PK for sure.

x74Pacioretty74x 02-19-2013 03:13 PM

PK Subban

Kezia 02-19-2013 03:17 PM

PK...

bigtimehockeyfan999* 02-19-2013 03:17 PM

they have the same amount of goals this year. PK's played nine games on D...Kessel's played 16 at F. but aside from that...he's just a more valuable player....he's more competetive...he's more passionate.....he is more of a leader and will become that leader more and more as the years pass. He doesn't curl up and hide against boston. He's always engaged and always looking to make an impact.

PK SUBBAN 100PERCENT

The Podium 02-19-2013 03:22 PM

Subban due to age and contract status. Aside from that i dont think there is any reason id chose Subban over Kessel.

Bob Cole 02-19-2013 03:31 PM

PK has played like an absolute stud this year. I think he could crack top 15 DMAN by years end.

Exactly lol.

Who cares about this silly poll?

If I start my hypothetical rebuild I want neither of them, give me one of Sidney Crosby, Stamkos, Malkin, Tavares etc.. you know, the guys who are a step or two above Kessel and Subban.

If we're talking D, I want Karlsson, Pietrangelo, Doughty over Subban...he takes WAY too many needless penalties and isn't really tough, Colton Orr scored a goal against him..the guy has like 10 goals in 400 games.

Phil Kessel holds more trade value than Subban, so I'd take him.

In what kind of world do you live in...

Pi 02-19-2013 03:50 PM

That stud of a defenseman has also faced the easiest competition on the Habs this year.

ya okay

I hate to agree with a Leafs fan but there is no way Subban would fetch a #2, #8.....ah forget about it, bad joke.

Weird thread OP, always pissing matches between the Habs and Leafs.

Mowerman 02-19-2013 03:57 PM

PK. But what does PK stand for? :sarcasm:

Montreal Shadow 02-19-2013 04:28 PM

At this point, I still don't consider PK a Dman you build around. I consider Kessel an elite complimentary forward. Subban has been terrific in the playoffs so I'll go with him I guess. Difficult choice but Kessel just hasn't impressed me in big games situations.

Noah23 02-19-2013 04:28 PM

I'd kill for Subban to be a Penguin...

The Powerplay would be insane

Malkin - Crosby - Neal

Subban - Letang

MastuhNinks 02-19-2013 04:54 PM

Kessel has already proven he can be elite in his position over a long period of time, Subban is really good but he isn't elite status yet. Kessel was a top 6 scorer last season and arguably the best player in his position. Subban still probably isn't a top 20 defensemen, although he's well on his way. I wouldn't be surprised if Subban could be a top 10 defensemen in a few years but that jump is not guaranteed, so I'll take the guy who has proven he can be one of the best in his position.

NyQuil 02-19-2013 04:57 PM

If Kessel were playing with an elite #1 centre, it'd be a much more interesting poll.

As it is, Subban is being judged on potential while Kessel's potential is essentially what he's producing now.

shaner89 02-19-2013 05:20 PM

I'll take the 6th overall point producer in the NHL every single day

Whydidijoin* 02-19-2013 06:07 PM

If I was starting a franchise, I would probably be forced to take Subban, since I would need a guy who I know is going to be on my team for longer, and since there is no time to build up a relationship with a player, and the team would probably suck, they are more likely to leave the expansion team in UFA.

In any other scenario, or in trade value, it is Kessel by a mile.

This. Building a team: probably Suban.

If I had a choice to pick on off UFA just to trade away Kessel easily. With a true #1 he's a 40 goal 90 point player easily. much more value then Suban.

Edit: should note if contract lenght wasn't an issue I take kessel easily. If I was starting a franchise I'd be lucky enough to have Crosby as my center :sarcasm: bring on the 90-100 point kessel years baby.

Corban 02-20-2013 12:05 AM

P.K. without a doubt

Hennig 02-20-2013 12:28 AM

If both were the same age and had the same contractual status I would go with Phil Kessel, but going by OP's rules and I'd choose Pernell Karl.

SchennSational1022* 02-20-2013 12:43 AM

As a flyers fan, it's obviously PK due to our needs.

BobbyFischer* 02-20-2013 12:52 AM

PK.

Small speedy sniper forward is nice but... I'll take the stud D-man who can do everything.

Habs 4 Life 02-20-2013 08:02 AM

The guy that would play 25+ minutes against the other teams top line

Rob Brown 02-20-2013 08:15 AM

This thread is dumb.

As for the thread, different players so it depends on what you need/were looking for.
