Best stoner rock / doom metal albums, or your top ten

Really enjoying the doom lately. If I heard more of them I may have thrown in some Trouble or Pentagram. Candlemass I'm having trouble really digging because of the vocals on Epicus Doomicus Metallicus. Here's mine:

Mournful Congregation - Weeping / An Epic Dream of Desire / Tears from a Grieving Heart / The Dawning of Mournful Hymns // Worship / Mournful Congregation (split)
Winter - Into Darkness
Sleep - Sleep's Holy Mountain
Thergothon - Streaming from the Heavens
The Melvins - Eggnog
Sunn o))) - The Grimmrobe Demos
Eyehategod - Dopesick
Earth - Extra-capsular Extraction / A Bureaucratic Desire for Extra-capsular Extraction
Paradise Lost - Gothic
Saint Vitus - V

"Blues For The Red Sun" by Kyuss
"Queens Of The Stone Age" by the Queens Of The Stone Age
"In Search Of..." by Fu Manchu
"Come My Fanatics..." by Electric Wizard
"The Big Black" by Orange Goblin
"Spine Of God" by Monster Magnet
"Rated R" by the Queens Of The Stone Age
"Clutch" by Clutch
"Colour Haze" by Colour Haze
"Welcome To Sky Valley" by Kyuss

Tough to put 'em in order outside of the first two.

hototogisu 02-20-2013 09:28 PM

1. Sleep - Jerusalem
2. Electric Wizard - Dopethrone
3. Earth - Earth 2
4. Sunn O))) - White1/White2
5. The Melvins - Houdini
6. Kyuss - Welcome to Sky Valley
7. Boris - Flood
8. Down - NOLA
9. OM - Conference of the Birds
10. Neurosis - Through Silver in Blood

Not going to lie, the order is pretty arbitrary since (a) I love all those albums and (b) the spectrum of what can be considered doom/stoner is incredibly broad.

seventieslord 02-21-2013 02:08 AM

Insert three by kyuss, three by qotsa, two by monster magnet, and black Sabbath's first two albums. Other than those two, I can't decide on specific albums right now.

Roboturner913 02-21-2013 02:51 AM

Stoner and doom can be two completely different things to me. Something like Candlemass or Daylight Dies sounds nothing like The Sword or early Mastodon before they went all prog and artsy.

Stoner rock?

Doesn't that scream Pink Floyd?

Nah - Stoner Rock is actually a genre.

Pavelski2112 02-21-2013 09:24 AM

Sleep's Holy Mountain
Electric Wizard - Dopethrone
Saint Vitus - Born Too Late
Kyuss - Welcome to Sky Valley
Winter - Into Darkness
Sunn o))) - Black One/Monoliths and Dimensions
Earth 2: Special Low Frequency Edition
Nebula - Atomic Ritual
Goatsnake - Trampled Under Hoof
Witchfinder General - Death Penalty

In no particular order.

Gustav Nyquist 02-21-2013 09:24 AM

Reverend Bizarre - II: Crush the Insects
Cathedral - Forest of Equilibrium
Gates of Slumber - Hymns of Blood and Thunder
Acid Bath - When The Kite String Pops
Saint Vitus - Born Too Late
Semlah - Semlah
Sunn - Monoliths & Dimensions
Solstice - Lamentations
Orodruin - Epicurean Mass
Fall of the Idols - The Womb of the Earth

Been awhile since I've listened to any of this.

Acallabeth 02-21-2013 10:12 AM

No real order. I guess my list has nothing in common with stoner rock, but the OP has Thergothon... :)

Esoteric - The Pernicious Enigma.
Esoteric - Epistemological Despondency.
Anathema - The Silent Enigma.
My Dying Bride - Songs of Darkness, Words of Light.
My Dying Bride - 34.788% (or how many of them...)
Virgin Black - Requiem: Mezzo Forte.
Estatic Fear - A Sombre Dance.
Mournful Congregation - The Book of Kings.
The 3rd and the Mortal - Tears Laid in Earth.
Autumn - Осень вечна.
Люди Осени - Восстание.

cynicism 02-21-2013 06:52 PM

Doom:
Morgion-Solinari
My Dying Bride-Turn Loose the Swans
Candlemass-Epicus Doomicus Metallicus
Cathedral-Forest of Equilibrium
Disembowelment-Transcendence Into the Peripheral
Black Sabbath-Volume 4
Anathema-Serenades
Mournful Congregation-The Monad of Creation
Skepticism-Lead and Aether
Katatonia-Brave Murder Day

Stoner:
Electric Wizard-Dopethrone Holy Dopethrone
Sleep-Dopesmoker
Eternal Elysium-Spiritualism D
Kyuss-Welcome to Sky Valley
Electric Wizard-S/T
Sleep-Holy Mountain

can't think of any other stoner stuff, I'm not that big on it.

eXile59 02-21-2013 07:21 PM

Electric Wizard & Eyehategod are always where I go. I don't think a lot of others compare.

I also don't consider Down or Acid Bath Doom or Stoner but if they are those too.

Eisen 02-21-2013 07:28 PM

Not enough love for ...and the circus leaves town.

Fighting Saint 02-22-2013 06:19 AM

Seemless

MetalheadPenguinsFan 02-22-2013 08:36 AM

Huh...I thought Eyehategod are more "Sludge" instead of Doom or stoner??? The only "stoner" thing about EHG IMO, are their lyrics about addiction and even those could be considered more "junkie" and not stoner.

Besides, if you're gonna namedrop Eyehategod OP, you cannot leave out their "Take As Needed For Pain" album. :yo: It's a masterpiece.

That Disembowelment is another one I may have included in my list if I heard it more. Once or twice on youtube doesn't cut it.

Ah genre talk, the vampire that just won't die.

I think of it like this:

blues --> rock --> metal

Each spring out of the other organically and nonlinearly (i.e. the progression is more like a dynamic web than this simplification). Black Sabbath is sort of between rock and metal (stoner rock) and sludge is sort of between stoner rock and doom metal. So it is implied that sludge is included in the thread title of stoner / doom. In short they are similarities and differences between the genres and it is not cut and dried.

Also MHPF, I don't include repeats on these sorts of lists. I just put in my fave / the one I think is best. I agree the first three Eyehategod albums are comparable. I think Take as Needed for Pain is actually my least favorite of the three.

Woah really??? How come???

You're the first person I've ever heard say that. Obviously it's not a bad opinion just alot of folks consider "Take As Needed For Pain" to be their best work. Myself included.

With that said, "Dopesick" rules. "My Name Is God...I Hate You" is such a perfectly vicious and hateful opening track. :yo: Also it's one of their best songs ever IMO.

Bobo420 02-23-2013 10:16 AM

As mostly already mentioned, anything by Sleep, Electric Wizard, High On Fire, Mournful Congregation, earlier Katatonia, Saint Vitus, Cathedral, maybe even Baroness' First and Second EPs, although that might fall more into the sludge category.

Really? That album seems so much worse than Angel and the Dark River to my tastes.

I like the unhinged feedback of the first album, and there were a number of good effective songs on there. It sort of tells me, it's okay to lose it sometimes at the same time that it says society is ****ed-up. Dopesick is most like a concept album and has a consistent feel, while still having high quality songs. Take as Needed was sort of in between and just didn't stand out quite as much. Song titles like Sister****er parts one and two seem shock rockish in its pure debauchery. Just doesn't grab me the same. My opinion might change cuz like I said they're close. I'm probably not an Eyehategod connoisseur like yourself, I listen to a lot of rock, punk, and especially metal in general.

Yeah, I know that it's not the most popular opinion. I wholeheartedly enjoy this album with his "dirty city" atmosphere.

You mean 34.788% Complete? I don't see what the big deal with that album is. It's not that big a departure from their core sound, a couple of songs are more experimental but other than that it's pretty typical MDB. It's certainly better than Like Gods of the Sun or some of the mediocre albums they did in the 2000s.

CaptainChara 02-26-2013 09:23 PM

Clutch - Clutch

My favorite album to get high with.

True enough. Sister****er Part 1 does sound a tad more rockish (well for Eyehategod anyway) but I must say that Sister****er Part 2 is pure sludge and Sabbath-esque goodness. You're right about Dopesick being a concept album of sorts though.

Regardless of which EHG album is your favourite, at least we both know that they kick ass. Cheers. :yo:
