PHILADELPHIA Ė The Flyers were hoping for the best. Instead, they got the worst.

Just when it seemed the team was getting healthy and close to being at full force, Matt Read took a crunching hit from Penguins forward Chris Kunitz in the first period of yesterdayís game.

The result of that injury? Read has torn rib cage muscles.

He will be out of the lineup for six weeks.

Itís a significant blow for the Flyers as Read, 26, was the teamís top goal-scorer so far this season, leading the way with seven tallies.

He had 13 points and was playing well on the Flyers top line with Claude Giroux and Jake Voracek.

But now, he wonít be back until April and the Flyers will have to find ways to make up for his lost production.

Itís not just on that top line either as Read was a key component to the Flyers special teams, playing frequent roles on both the power play and the penalty kill.

For tonightís game, Tye McGinn returns to the lineup and takes Readís spot, but the loss of Read Ė the third Flyer who played on that top line this season to be beset with an injury Ė will leave coach Peter Laviolette to once again search for chemistry on his forward lines.

Hoping it's not the flu.

flyguy 02-20-2013 09:43 PM

I think in the GDT, someone posted from NHL.com that he left after taking a shot to his chest.

Hopefully it's not serious. Losing Read would not be good considering he is one of our 3 forwards who can play in any situation throughout a game.

They showed the hit on NHL network and it doesn't look like he hit his head.

Mgkibbles 02-20-2013 09:47 PM

NHL Network said he left after a hit by Cooke or somebody. Looked like he got smushed into the boards in a way that it could be a broken collarbone, hopefully I'm wrong, or that wasn't the play he got hurt on.

FreshPerspective 02-20-2013 09:51 PM

If it was Cooke I won't be surprised...guy is a grim reaper out there

Paul Holmgren says Matt Read will be re-evaluated tomorrow. Injury still unspecified as upper-body, some thinking concussion is possible.

sources say it was the hit from Kunitz that felled Read. Holmgren only says he will be re-evaluated tomorrow. Concussion?

Apparently the hit came with about 3:30 left in the first period.

GoneFullHextall 02-21-2013 12:50 AM

sucks about Reader.
Just plug McGinn back in there. He never should of been scratched anyway.

OzFlyers 02-21-2013 03:58 AM

I was looking for the injury as I was watching the game when it was over and I think it was the hit by Kunitz but he still finished his shift so I hope it is nothing too serious!

Having Read back for tonight's game would be huge, as he would at least be rested. Hopefully Read, McGinn and (gulp) Foster will be in the line-up for fresh legs.

Yeah if Foster comes in I hope its for Gervais. I assume McGinn will be in for Read if he can't go

No thanks to Foster. Only one he should replace would be Gervais and he played under 12 minutes yesterday so he should be fine today. Plus Foster and fresh legs is an oxymoron. That dude is slower than molasses

Sestito and Mcginn look to be scratches again tonight. That has to bod well Read playing.

We were told these are scratches. If that's the case, it looks like Matt Read is in and Bryz starts.

Ryker 02-21-2013 11:15 AM

Good to see Read back, but I hope they're not rushing things and that he is actually ready to play.

Jtown 02-21-2013 01:51 PM

What a relief. Imagine how much more potent we will be in a week when hartnell is back.

Still waiting for Homer update on Read, but McGinn expected to take his spot tonight. #Flyers #Panthers
Tweet from Chariddiaidididi. Seems like he won't be playing tonight. Beat writers got a little ahead of themselves I believe.

MiamiScreamingEagles 02-21-2013 04:37 PM

McGinn is in tonight.
