SNAKE EYES AND PUCK LUCK

Winnipeg (6-8-1) @ Carolina (8-5-1)

After going without a point on their homestand, the Winnipeg Jets kicked off their longest road
trip of the season with a much-needed win.

They'll look to build on that result as they continue the five-game trek Thursday night against
the Carolina Hurricanes, who are hoping to have Jeff Skinner available as these Southeast
Division rivals square off for the first time.

The Jets (6-8-1) gave up three goals in each game during an 0-3-0 homestand before pulling out
a 2-1 victory at Buffalo on Tuesday. Andrew Ladd scored his team-leading eighth goal and Bryan
Little added his third as Winnipeg improved to 5-0-1 when surrendering two goals or fewer.

"The first thing that it does when you win is it brings joy back in your life, which we all
welcome because it's been miserable enough for a while," coach Claude Noel told the league's
official website. "We didn't want to go down the same path we've been for the more-than-enough
times I'd like to think about."

Ondrej Pavelec, who had gone 1-7-0 with a 3.72 goals-against average in his previous eight
appearances before Tuesday, made 29 saves to earn his fourth victory.

"Pavelec was outstanding in this game, he really helped us win," Noel added. "He made some key
saves, he was big in the net, he was really focused and I thought he was outstanding which is
the way we know he's capable of playing."

Pavelec hasn't been very sharp against the Hurricanes over the course of his career, going
3-6-2 with a 4.04 GAA. He's given up at least four goals in eight of 12 starts in this series.

The Jets, though, have compiled a 6-1-2 record in the club's last nine visits to Raleigh.

The Hurricanes (8-5-1) had averaged 3.8 goals during a 5-0-1 stretch before failing to get
anything going in Monday's 3-0 loss at Montreal. Carolina, which was limited to a season-low 19
shots, was without Skinner (upper body) as well as defensemen Joni Pitkanen and Tim Gleason due
to lower-body injuries.

"We just couldn't find that next gear that we've been playing with for a while," coach Kirk
Muller said. "We just didn't have it from the start.

"We're missing some key guys. In a tight game like tonight, Skinner is a game-breaker type of
player. But you're going to have injuries, everyone's going to go through it, and you have to
find a way to win."

Skinner, Pitkanen and Gleason each have a chance to suit up Thursday. Skinner, who has 14
points in 13 games, has notched four goals and seven assists in his last nine against Winnipeg.

Cam Ward stopped 23 of 26 shots Monday in his sixth consecutive road start. The veteran has
allowed 11 goals while going 1-2-0 at home.

Ward is 21-10-4 versus the Winnipeg franchise - his most wins against any team - despite a
lackluster 2.96 GAA. If in goal, he'll face a Jets attack that's scored two goals or fewer in
each of its last six games while going a combined 0 for 13 on the power play.

Winnipeg has killed an NHL-low 68.1 percent of its opponents' chances on the man advantage, but
it's yielded just four goals on 20 opportunities over its last seven games. The Jets held the
Sabres scoreless on three chances Tuesday.

"Our penalty kill has been actually really good (of late)," said Ladd, who spent the first
two-plus seasons of his career with Carolina. "We've kind of turned that around lately and it's
been a big thing and it's going to be a big thing going forward."

Holy smokes. Ridiculously awesome GDT. Don't know how you do them YWGinYYZ. Hopefully Jets can get lucky tonight and come out with a BIG WIN! :handclap: It would be very nice to be within 2 pts for 1st in the soft-east division heh.

BTW noob question: What's BDT?

garret9 02-21-2013 02:30 AM

Man, you always do such an awesome job!

Nice BDT, but I have to play debbie downer here. I predict a 4-2 Canes final, with Eric Staal getting an EN goal.

ps241 02-21-2013 03:47 AM

Gez Louise YWG you have a great imagination and redic talent (my mom use to chop ridiculous up and say redic). Love the theme!!

Now that we need to win 2 of every 3 games until the end of the season :help: what do we really have to lose? Let's just see another solid effort and a fun game to watch.

I have a follow-up question:

'Bro-Day' - can we get some background and context to that?

I'm doing it lazy this game because the next game is big time.

3rd pair 1.865 68.4 12.8 12.84 0.00 1.65
Forwards: Their top line has been scoring pretty high rate (although 12% is pretty crazy sh%), and their second line is scoring pretty similarly to ours... and that's without Skinner. Their 3rd line is about par with ours... Ignore their 4th line stats 'cos it's only for one player as two of them are missing from BHTN. Notice how everyone on the team has positive possession (Corsi)! Ya this team will be tough. Although, their team takes the Byfuglien approach to out-chancing their opponents (offense to create defense).
Defense: They are indeed weaker without Pitkanen but still doing alright, although I hand that to having stronger top6. Like us, they have a lot of injuries, so the usage and lines is pretty tough to make anything out of anything.

LLW: These guys DOMINATED last game. By eyes and stats. Their possession was great.
KBA: Burmi and Antro had rough games last time but Kane made up for it. Hopefully Kane keeps going and Burmi's (minimal) + Antro's (substantial) lack of puck luck picks up.
TJW: This line seemed to work ok last game, although there wasn't much substantial that came of it. Tangradi awaits his first point, Wellwood has been underperforming, and Jokinen is looking to be as unlucky as Nino and Fehr combined last season (ok not that bad).
WST: I like Thor but there's no doubt he's the weak link here. But, weak links on a 4th line don't affect the game as much as other lines.
Hainsey-Bogosian: Oh my did this pair do well last game. Buffalo's top line did not gain a single Fenwick for (shot on goal or missed attempt) against this pair. Not one. Hopefully Enstrom returns soon so we can have 3 working pairs.
Clitsome-Byfuglien: Hopefully Enstrom returns soon.
Stuart-Postma: They've done well for a third pair, but hopefully the mistakes lessen a bit. I've noticed them both cleaning up their errors, but there's still a lot to go.

King Woodballs 02-21-2013 05:48 AM

great GCT per usual YWG

Pretty much a must win IMO

Especially with playing the division leader.

Boom Boom Anton 02-21-2013 06:28 AM

FYI on the Canes line-up for your GDT. Following guys are out: Ruutu, Skinner, Brent, Gleason, McBain and Pitkanen (there's a chance Pitkanen will play)

Based on practice yesterday, forwards line-up looks to be:

Tlusty-Staal-Semin
LaRose-Staal-Dwyer
Bowman-Jokinen-Wallace
Welsh-Nash-Nodl

Canes had to do an emergency call-up of Ryan Murphy from the OHL. Not sure what the pairings will be, but I suspect something like:

Harrison-Faulk
Corvo - Sanguinetti
Jordan - Murphy

Thanks - pretty crazy! I caught 4 of the injuries, but didn't realize there were 6 out. As much as it's beneficial to the Jets that Skinner isn't in the line-up, I hope that he's OK / recovers quickly. G'luck tonight.

KingBogo 02-21-2013 06:54 AM

Another great BDT. Pretty funny. Looks like we are up against a depleted Canes team tonight. But any team with Staal - Staal down the middle will be tough for the Jets.

It will be interesting to see if the boys can put a couple good games together, or we will be back to "the sky is falling" later tonight with demands for Noel's head, everyone is soft, slow or both and we should draft Mackinnon over Jones with the first pick talk.

Sorry I forgot to add the forwards can't score to my little rant.

Gump Hasek 02-21-2013 07:27 AM

Great GDT, YWGinYYZ, as usual.

Prot 02-21-2013 07:30 AM

Awesome GDT but don't you think the price per game is a little too high on that slot machine? :)

Ruutu has been out all season, a slight chance he may be back IF the Canes make the playoffs. McBain we just heard about yesterday ourselves and have no idea what that's about. Not complaining though, the other guys need to step up and some younger guys get a chance to get some experience. I think overall, that helps the team in the long run and I'd rather have injuries now vs. in late March/April.

Good luck.

BennyTheJet 02-21-2013 07:41 AM

Amazing BDT!

5-2 Jets.

Guerzy 02-21-2013 07:53 AM

I am speechless, this BDT is fantastic!

This game could be tough, then again the Canes have a pretty depleted line-up due to injuries. E. Staal and J. Staal could be a force, and Semin can snipe with the best of them.

I hope our Jets continue to build off of last games effort, intensity, desire to win, etc. They played like they did not want to lose, and that was huge. They played with a chip on their shoulder.

Show it to me again, JETS!

Guerzy 02-21-2013 07:57 AM

BREAKING NEWS...

Zach Bogosian will return to the line-up TONIGHT after serving almost a FULL YEARS suspension for his hit on Nodl last March............................................. ..
