Hipchecking

Not used much in the NHL these days, eh?

Lucbourdon 02-22-2013 12:26 AM

Ever since they called the penalty on Ballard/Hamhuis PERFECT hipcheck during the playoffs last year , Players are basically afraid to even use it anymore.

Dr Jan Itor 02-22-2013 12:26 AM

Correctly, at least.

Pigs On The Wing 02-22-2013 12:27 AM

No because every hip check is called a low-bridge now.

Yeah, why is that? I remember Scott Stevens doing it the best when I was younger, albeit his was a little smoother than Hall's attempt

The Sullivan hip is an absolute beauty. So effortless, yet effective

For the record I think Hall was trying to hip check clutterbuck.

And should NOT be suspended.

Ha, nice! Bozak wasn't expecting that at all. I'd like to see more of the ol' boys club bring back some hip checks, I bet it would really throw off some of the young guys.

It's a lost art.

Yes, but it's not the end of the world.
If you miss a hipcheck, you put yourself way out of position. And if you hit the player too low, you'll get a penalty and possibly injure someone badly.

kingsholygrail 02-22-2013 01:06 AM

Gotta be good at it. Otherwise you just look like a dumbass.

EpicNeilTime 02-22-2013 01:11 AM

Half the time it's interference now. At least in Junior hockey.

From various Rock'em Sock'em videos:

In b4 Kyle McLaren videos.

I miss hipchecks though, with today's officiating they're all but out of the game

Here's a nice one from Ian White a few years back. One of my favourite moments of him

kingsholygrail 02-22-2013 01:18 AM

Rob Blake and his fat ass was the king of hipchecks.

CanucksSayEh 02-22-2013 01:30 AM

Yup, Ballard and Hamhuis could be hoola-hoop champs with dose hips.

WTFetus 02-22-2013 01:34 AM

I wouldn't put Ballard in the same conversation as Hamhuis. Hamhuis knows how to deliver clean hipchecks (same goes with Doughty). A lot of Ballard's hip checks look like they are knee-level.

cotillion 02-22-2013 01:53 AM

canucks party all up in 'ere

sunnyvale420 02-22-2013 02:05 AM

Another plus for the nhls anti canucks conspiracy
