Last 10: Phoenix 6-2-2; Edmonton 2-5-3

Season series: This is the second of three meetings this season between the two clubs. In the opener on Jan. 30, Nail Yakupov scored the game-winner with a power-play goal 3:52 into overtime and Devan Dubnyk made 27 saves to lead the Oilers to a 2-1 victory. Edmonton went 0-3-1 against Phoenix in 2011-12.

Big story: After opening the season 4-2-0, the Oilers have only won two of their last 10 games to fall to 13th in the Western Conference standings with 15 points -- three behind eighth-seeded Minnesota. Following Saturday's home game against the Coyotes, the Oilers will embark on a 17-day road trip that spans nine games.

Team Scope:

Coyotes: After opening the season with four losses in five games, the Coyotes have gone 7-2-2, notching points in nine of the past 11 games to move into seventh place in the Western Conference with 18 points. The scoring has been spread across the board with Radim Vrbata (four goals) leading the way with 12 points. Forwards Martin Hanzal and Mikkel Boedker and defensemen Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Keith Yandle each have 10 points.

Oilers: The Oilers lost to the Minnesota Wild for the 11th time in the past 13 meetings on Thursday at Rexall Place. Ryan Smyth scored his first goal in six games for the Oilers to give the home team a 1-0 lead, but the Wild scored the next three. Edmonton's Taylor Hall ended any hope of an Oilers comeback when he was given a five-minute penalty for kneeing and a game misconduct for an open-ice collision with Cal Clutterbuck with 2:33 to go. Clutterbuck had to be helped off the ice and was unable to put weight on his left leg. Hall had a disciplinary hearing by the NHL department of safety on Friday for the hit on Clutterbuck.

Who's hot: Since returning from injury on Feb. 1, Coyotes goalie Mike Smith has notched three shutouts, posted a 2.08 goals-against average and a .930 saves percentage. Over that nine-game stretch, the Coyotes have posted points in seven games he has started. … Edmonton's Hall has recorded a point in five of the past seven games (one goal, six assists).

Injury report: The Oilers are without forwards Anton Lander (foot), Ryan Jones (eye) and Shawn Horcoff (hand) and defenseman Andy Sutton (knee). … Phoenix could have three players returning to its lineup, forwards Radim Vrbata (lower body), Matthew Lombardi (shoulder) and defenseman Derek Morris (upper body).

Is Yak still on the 3rd line? What was wrong with him with Gagner & Hemsky? I'd either leave him on that line or try him with RNH.

sepHF 02-23-2013 12:52 AM

Are these the real lines?

Senor Catface 02-23-2013 12:52 AM

The game is at 1:30? I'll make sure to tune in about...5 pm.

Spawn 02-23-2013 01:03 AM

I've got a feeling Yakupov pots one. Maybe a bounce back from the team thinking they need to step it up without Hall (wishful thinking on my part)

AimsforGenji 02-23-2013 01:24 AM

Glad I'm not the coach because for **** and giggles I'd try something like:

Jones - Gags - Eberle
Eager - RNH - Yak
Paajarvi - VV - Hemsky
Smyth - Belanger - Harti

Mr Forever 02-23-2013 01:46 AM

Why would Smyth be put in the top 6 before Yak. What is this!!???

Moonlapse Vertigo 02-23-2013 01:53 AM

I think I'll be watching the Blue Jays pre-season game instead.

EchoesoftheEighties 02-23-2013 01:55 AM

This team was awful enough WITH Hall in the lineup. Not a good feeling about this one but hope they can pull it off.

Aww hell yea

I've been fired up for this since November.

Blue Jays season can't come any faster now after how the oilers have been performing.

That's the weird thing about pro sports we could get spanked or maybe we'll find some good new combinations that wouldn't be tried when Hall is in the lineup.

Maybe RNH will find his groove, him and hall have zero chemistry.

Yep. There's simply no avoiding it

McSomnii 02-23-2013 02:52 AM

Oilers are without their best forward for the next couple of games, the only one who seemed capable of generating momentum on his own on a semi-regular basis.

As such, I predict a 5-0 Oilers victory.

Mcnofool6110 02-23-2013 03:12 AM

Best. Location. Ever.

Hall's out.

So... 6-5 OT win. They go up 5-3, we tie it in the third. Jones with a greasy hat trick in his return. If he doesn't... uh... Schultz. Yes. Both schultzes. Hat tricks.
why not.

This team doesn't inspire passion.

NeverForget06 02-23-2013 03:30 AM

Easily the most important game of the season so far, the oilers can afford to come into a nine game road trip on a losing skid, we need to start winning right now. This team can still do it, but Ebs and RNH need to play the way they can, if we go out there and can only manage a goal or two like we have been for the last couple of games things are going to get ugly. I still have a ton of faith in this team but we need to turn things around quick. This game is the perfect place to start

Jepprey 02-23-2013 03:32 AM

Eager with 4 goals.

jackstar 02-23-2013 03:41 AM

Is holiday spelt halliday as a play on words for the start of some spring training baseball or simply a spelling mistake? Either way it has me excited to watch some jays game and then probably tune into the oilers game and watch them lose a snoozer 2-1

my guess it is about baseball--Unless he is taking a run at me with horrible spelling

The Nuge 02-23-2013 04:34 AM

OR maybe its because Hall is taking a holiday

Last season Hall, Eberle and RNH started the season together. The production wasn't very good. Then Hall got taken off their line for a game against the Hawks. That's when RNH put up 5 points and Hall had a hat trick.

Here are their stats.

Before the game against Chicago...
Hall: 17 games- 3 goals and 8 points
Eberle: 18 games- 4 goals and 13 points
RNH: 18 games- 7 goals and 14 points

Stretches after line was broken up....
Hall: 25 games- 15 goals and 27 points(pretty much kept up this pace the rest of the season)
Eberle: 31 games- 20 goals and 31 points(wow)
RNH: 17 games- 6 goals and 21 points(up until his injury)

Obviously Hall and Eberle played together for a lot of those stretches since RNH was out. The point is that we can take Hall off that line and goods things can still happen. Good things probably will happen. It's not even like they're playing bad together right now but we're losing games and they aren't producing so maybe it's time to change things up for more than just a game or two.

I wouldn't mine seeing...
Hall - Gagner - Eberle
Hemsky - RNH - Yakupov

I really want to see what Yakupov looks like on the right side with some offensively gifted players(no offense Smyth/Belanger).

Thank god I'm watching UFC 157 tonight instead of this.
