Tim McCarver’s Final Year at Fox

http://www.thebiglead.com/index.php/...aces-mccarver/

Quote:

Tim McCarver, the longtime Fox baseball analyst, is one of the most divisive TV voices in sports. Fans either enjoy his witty banter with Joe Buck, or absolutely canít stand him and wish Fox would replace him.

Fans who donít like McCarver may soon get their wish. McCarver 71, is entering the final year of his contract at Fox Sports. Heís been calling the World Series with Buck on Fox since 1996 (except for 1997 and 1999, when NBC had it), and sources say the two sides havenít made much progress about a contract extension. If a deal is struck, itíll likely happen in the next few weeks.

[UPDATE: Fox Sports spokesman Dan Bell tells me: We fully expect Tim to continue with us.]

The decision Fox faces: Keep the duo together (Buck has said nothing but great things about McCarver), or go in a new direction. Thereís the ďif-it-isnít-broke-donít-fix-itĒ crowd who says they have chemistry Ö and everyone else who is ready for Buck to have a new partner (or two).

Ugh, no three man booth please.

MurrayBannerman 02-24-2013 09:54 AM

How about we have neither?

GIN ANTONIC 02-24-2013 10:14 AM

Get rid of both. Just awful. McCarver is one of the worst sportscasters I have ever had the displeasure of hearing. Good riddance.

GOBLUES4257 02-24-2013 11:33 AM

I just can't stand McCarver. He always says the most obvious things as well.

PanthersPens62 02-24-2013 12:22 PM

I'd miss him. I've learned a lot from his deep analytical thoughts over the years.

There are two things I will say in McCarver's defense:

1) Joe Buck could make anybody look bad. Good broadcasting thrives on chemistry and Buck is so disinterested that any color analyst, even an enthusiastic young guy, would die on the vine.

2) Most color analysts have a distinct shelf life. With a handful of exceptions, if you're not talking about guys you used to play against, you aren't really relevant. McCarver played his first major league game in 1959...there's no way he was going to stay good in 30+ years of broadcasting. He was pretty good in the 80s, then started to go by the end of the decade when there weren't too many guys left in the league that he'd played against (he retired as a player in 1980).

Saying that, it's clear he needs to be put out to pasture. But so does Joe Buck. I don't understand what Fox sees in him. He doesn't care, he doesn't have good pipes or the gravitas that comes from decades in the game. He's the lazy son who took over dad's business and is proverbially running it into the ground.

Can we steal Jon Sciambi? He's great.

Why did Fox have gaps in '97 and '99?

Yeah, Buck should not be doing baseball. He sounds like he is bored with the sport. His football broadcasting is much better.

mccarver met with fox executives and tried to plead his case that he was entertaining.

NBC had the World Series in both those years. They shared the World Series with Fox back then.

He is locked up long-term with ESPN

Clowe Me 02-25-2013 02:32 PM

That's unfortunate (the ongoing talks).

Whoa, it actually happened. Tim McCarver's 17-year-reign at Fox (and at CBS and ABC before that, and in our autumn nightmares every year) is all over. The 71-year-old poet of the obvious will stop calling games for Fox at the end of this season, the network announced today. This is especially good news since Fox has the World Series locked up through 2021. He called 23 World Series and was actually decent for probably the first, oh, five or six of them.

As an alleged media expert, you should know that McCarver wasn't that bad.

10 years ago he was among the best. His head just isn't there anymore. Guys get old and get worse at their jobs. Announcers are certainly among them.

MurrayBannerman 03-27-2013 03:56 PM

Today is a good day.

HabsByTheBay 03-27-2013 04:34 PM

McCarver's been in the toilet for longer than 10 years. At least 15, if not longer.

Now having a damp towel for a partner doesn't help...chemistry between your PBP and analyst is an underrated part of broadcasting. Joe Buck makes everyone look bad.

But McCarver is way past his sell-by date. I think broadcasters tend to have a limited shelf life and McCarver's been in the game for over 30 years. Even a legend like Madden had lost something off his fastball after 30 years.

PanthersPens62 03-27-2013 05:02 PM

Well, say what you want (and yeah, I posted the meme earlier in the thread, but just for a laugh), but Timmy was a legend & very well respected by his peers. Yeah, he may have slipped a bit recently, but he was still a joy to listen to. Enjoy your swan song, Tim, and have a great retirement.

Steve Stone is the best color guy in the biz.

Don't think Buck would like sharing a booth with him, tho.

Stone is a victim of chemistry. He's average because Hawk is so terrible.
