Alex Smith traded to the Chiefs for 34th overall pick+conditional 2014 mid-rounder

Jason La Canfora ‏@JasonLaCanfora
The 49ers have expressed to others that a deal for QB Alex Smith is effectively complete. Can't be finalized til league year begins 3/12

Jason La Canfora ‏@JasonLaCanfora
so it's not official, both clubs view it at as it's effectively done. I do not know the other team. KC and JAX are 2 teams that make sense

Interesting.

Stad 02-24-2013 05:27 PM

I bet it's the Chiefs as well. **** me.

Avs_19 02-24-2013 05:44 PM

It would be a good move for KC. Trade for Smith and then draft Joeckel like they talked about on NFLN earlier today.

McOilbleeder 02-24-2013 06:58 PM

Adding Smith doesn't mean they won't draft Geno.

Remember, they have Albert at LT who gave up something like 1 sack in 14 games. If they re-sign him, adding Smith to be a stop gap starter while having Geno Smith sit and develop might not be a bad idea.

Apart from Joeckel, I'm not sure I'd consider any other prospect for 1st overall. Star probably, but his heart condition is worrying. Jones' spinal issue is in the same boat. No WR or secondary players worth the pick either.

here's some more info from nfl.com

"Everywhere I go in Indianapolis, I hear someone say that the Alex Smith-to-Kansas City Chiefs deal is all but done.(Now CBS is reporting a deal is "effectively done" for Smith, but won't name the team.)
Quote:

Jacksonville Jaguars general manager Dave Caldwell said it's "not us" who has a deal in place in a text to the Florida Times-Union.
Quote:

NFL.com's Albert Breer reported a high-ranking San Francisco 49ers source says he's not aware of a deal being done. NFL.com's Ian Rapoport says the Chiefs have showed the most interest. Mr. RapSheet also hears the Chiefs are particularly high on tackle Luke Joeckel as a No. 1 overall pick candidate.

San Fran should get a decent haul for Smith. If Kevin Kolb can net Dominique Rodgers Cromartie and a 2nd round pick, Smith should go for quite a bit. Two 2nds and a 5th perhaps?

Clowe Me 02-24-2013 08:21 PM

I hope it is KC and I hope Smith has success there.

Just like Montana

McSkittlez 02-24-2013 08:41 PM

Goodbye Smith. You did what you could in SF. Hope he has success where ever he goes. Ok, maybe not everywhere.

Rickety Cricket 02-24-2013 08:58 PM

I'd imagine it would be a conditional pick.

spintheblackcircle 02-24-2013 09:33 PM

Gotta be at least a 2nd

Except for, you know, all dem shiny trophies. ;)

If it's the Chiefs, was hoping Reid would overpay to get Foles back. Heck, even if they get Smith, Reid could still want to go after Foles.

It's a 2nd and more. You can bet on that. QBs carry a premium moreso than any other position in the league. You would never see any team give up what the Redskins gave up to get RG3 if it wasn't for a QB.

Jets?

Rickety Cricket 02-24-2013 11:10 PM

I like Smith, but is he going to really help the Chiefs that much? I figure the 2nd would be more valuable for a team like the Chiefs because they have so many holes.

That second round pick would likely get wasted on somebody like Barkley is they keep it. Their biggest problem was turning the ball over. Smith is the best in the league at avoiding turnovers so that would help out a ton.

A good QB can hide many holes that a team has. I'm not sure if Alex Smith is that good of a QB, but I would gladly spend a 2nd round pick+ to find out. Even if the Chiefs were able to find a great RB, O-Lineman or whatever with that 2nd round pick, that team still goes nowhere without a good QB.

Bob Richards 02-24-2013 11:55 PM

I wish Smith the best. Still a fan.

mmk786 02-25-2013 12:07 AM

I would be surprised if its KC's 2nd.

Agreed. 3rd round pick IMO. Maybe a conditional second pick based on starts or a contract extension. No way is it for that 2nd rounder straight up

saba 02-25-2013 03:46 AM

And how is San Fran in a position of strength here. Everyone knows Smith is not coming back and you know this year he was a good soldier but is not going to do another year as backup.

I will say a 4th that moves to a 2nd provisional in 2014 dependent on performance.

Respect Your Edler 02-25-2013 07:08 AM

I doubt it's more than a 6th. The guy has an underwhelming resume and only one relatively expensive year left on his deal. He has no upside either.

Big Poppa Puck 02-25-2013 07:59 AM

I read somewhere (I forget where) that it's a 3rd plus a late rounder.

GKJ 02-25-2013 08:09 AM

In this draft, I'd rather spend a late 2nd round pick-3rd on Alex Smith, who has proven he can win games, than the underwhelming group of QB's out there.
