I'm a little surprised by this as I'd heard some say he was weak at the AHL level. But, he's a depth defenceman with experience and teams love to stockpile those going into the playoffs.

NEWS ALERT: Penguins have signed defenseman Mark Eaton to a one-year contract. He was a member of #Pens 2009 Cup team

CB Joe 02-25-2013 12:55 PM

I guess no one is really selling depth defenseman at this point.

BeauKnows19 02-25-2013 12:57 PM

I don't see the point, until another d is traded. I'm fine with carrying him but I don't want him playing over Bort or Despres. Seems like a waste to now be fine with carrying 8 d when we could have just kept Strait who is better.

Matt Damon 02-25-2013 12:57 PM

Is it a 2-way contract? Doesn't make much sense if its not.

domaug* 02-25-2013 01:00 PM

if it isn't a two-way contract, i can't see him being on the big team.

airforceones25 02-25-2013 01:01 PM

Should have kept Lovejoy.

I don't care what any Pens fans say about him but he has been sensational with the Ducks.

good for him. he was a soft turnover machine in Pittsburgh. maybe Boudreau's system suits his style better.

He's been outplayed by Bortuzzo and Despres so unless you mean for Wilkes-Barre, no.

It was better for him to go somewhere he gets ice time. PIT needs to let Bortuzzo and Despres play and there will only be more Dmen coming up next season.

This is a simple low risk insurance deal, not someone suddenly missing Lovejoy.

Happy Benny is doing well with a change of scenery. He isn't the first, and won't be the last player to suck on one team and then turn it around in a different environment.

That said, the Eaton signing is "meh" at best IMO.

Why would a two way contract matter? He has to pass waivers to go down regardless and I doubt the pens are cash strapped.

TorstenFrings 02-25-2013 01:21 PM

My usual overreactions about wanting to keep Niskanen aside, I feel actually rather indifferent about this.

Shrimper 02-25-2013 01:31 PM

Eaton had a PTO at Wilkes-Barre so clearly something went right for us to sign him. My thinking is that someone is getting traded, my guess is Niskanen or a F player is being sent down.

gdsmack267 02-25-2013 01:33 PM

Mark is a good vetran guy to have in case of injuries. He knows the team, already played in the system before and if someone goes down he can easily play a bottom pairing role.

SEALBound 02-25-2013 01:34 PM

Don't mind this as a depth signing. Hopefully he never has to play but if he does it will be nice to have a journeyman as opposed to a greenback.

wej20 02-25-2013 01:40 PM

Could do worse for an 8th dman.

And I don't care how sensational he is with the Ducks, he was lousy as a Penguin.

I'd rather have Eaton and a 5th round pick than Lovejoy. Eaton will be nothing more than an 8th defender who gets in the odd game because of injuries. Shero loves his defensive depth and Eaton cost us nothing...so it's hard to find much to complain about here.

JawandaPuck 02-25-2013 01:57 PM

May free up a young roster d-man to trade for a winger.

Rivet52 02-25-2013 02:06 PM

Eaton's not terrible as a seventh. Won't look out of place on the bottom-pairing. Seems as though Pittsburgh's got a lot of defensemen now though. I'm not one to usually jump to conclusions about what a signing signifies, but maybe a defenseman will be on the move.

xECK29x 02-25-2013 02:06 PM

Just steady depth, nothing more, nothing less. Didn't the Pens carry 9D during the cup run?

danishh 02-25-2013 02:08 PM

depth dman, bylsma already knows him. Cant really turn out that badly, can it?

Honour Over Glory 02-25-2013 02:10 PM

He was skating with the big club after his PTO with WBS in the AHL, maybe he looked like he still had something left in the tank, for about 29 games, he wouldn't be that bad of a 7th-8th defenseman to have around.

He's going to be good to have around for the younger guys and it adds some experience to the Pens blueline that has Bortuzzo and Despres as regulars (well, Borts rotates in and out of the line-up, deserves a more permanent spot).

This could also mean Ray is ready to make a trade now that he has 8 defensemen on the roster again or maybe he plans on carrying 8, at the start of the season that was the plan until it wasn't anymore and we lost Strait on waivers and then traded Lovejoy (who did suck with the Pens).

Alex Goligoski
Sergei Gonchar
Brooks Orpik
Rob Scuderi
Hal Gill
Mark Eaton
Philippe Boucher

So eight.

Yep.

Orpik, Gonchar, Scuderi, Gill, Letang, Eaton, Goligoski, Boucher, & Lovejoy.

Eaton will be in the Boucher role this year. Lovejoy joined after the AHL playoffs and didn't get in any games, but he was there. That's the role Dylan Reese would likely be in this year.
