Love for the Coaches: Who's the best in the NHL right now?

Don't see these guys getting a lot of love for the orchestrating they do, so let's give them some credit.

Who do you think is coaching the best right now? And by that I mean, who has managed to connect the best with his players and motivate them in addition to making good coaching decisions.

I've always liked Boudreau and I think he's doing a fantastic job. More by happenstance than anything I've watched his career for a good number of years and I think he's really efefctive at connecting with players. His style just seems to jive and with the right group they enjoy the flexibility he gives.

Paul MacLean
Randy Carlyle

(ex-Jets bias):P

PricerStopDaPuck 02-27-2013 10:57 AM

Carlyle/therrien

I have a hell of a lot of respect for any coach who can develop a scheme to take an otherwise average team and make them competitive every single night. Tippett, Hitchcock last year, Boudreau, Sutter last year, etc. And while he's not really in that category, I've always thought Babcock was a great coach.

CanadianHockey 02-27-2013 11:01 AM

Hard not to appreciate what MacLean's doing in Ottawa.

Babcock is slightly overrated. Any coach would look great with Holmstrom, Datsyuk, and Lidstrom part of your core.

Maclean/Carlyle for my money.

Call me biased but Maclean just oozes respect and has an AHL caliber team (with spectacular goaltending) winning games.

I don't think anyone in that room wouldn't take a bullet for 'stache right now.

Peter Laviolette

He has magic timeouts

ZARTONK 02-27-2013 11:05 AM

I can hardly talk about best in the NHL right now in any intelligent manner but Therrien's been doing good in Montreal, I wasn't expecting quite this much after he got hired.

TMI 02-27-2013 11:17 AM

Therrien, Carlyle and Q should all get some love due to their starts, and PM due to his team still looking solid after what should have been crippling injuries. Trotz will get some love as always, but I'm not sure he is doing better than he should with what he has.

He's a really good coach. The team also has good leadership. I'm impressed with that whole team.

Dave Lewis didn't.

Not enough love for Trotz

I'm starting to believe everything about the Red Wings is overrated...

Next will be their trainers are overrated, I guess.

Scotty Bowman was legit.

Look at what he did with Anaheim. He almost won a cup there and would have if Burke didn't want to bring in his own guy.

OnionPuck 02-27-2013 11:41 AM

Yeah I totally forgot about Maclean. He's doing amazing, really.

Babcock has always impressed me too.

Holmstrom? Lidstrom? They are both retired, and Holmstrom isn't the difference between a good team and a great team anyways...

He's managed to keep the Wings solidly in the playoff race despite recently losing on the best defenseman of all time in Lidstrom, Rafalski, and Stuart in recent years. That's not even counting the incredible rash of injuries the Wings have sustained this year. It's a shame Babcock has never won an Adams. Maybe this year, depending on where the Wings finish.

hototogisu 02-27-2013 11:50 AM

MacLean, Quenneville and Therrien are my top 3 at this point in the season.

They have to be magic. We are usualy down by 2 goals after 2 minutes of play any way. He should use the timeout before the opening face off and yell at the players then.
