Hannibal (NBC)

Premieres April 4.

I'm a fan of the movies so I'll give it a try. I think they made a great choice for Hannibal Lecter. Problem of course it's on NBC. I've watched their shows before and enjoyed them only to have them cancelled because of ratings. We'll see how this does.

Bruv 02-28-2013 10:14 AM

I'm gonna watch the premiere, but my expectations are extremely low for a couple of reasons. It's on NBC and a TV series on the subject matter is more suited for HBO, Showtime, or something like AMC.

Bubba Thudd 02-28-2013 10:21 AM

Yeah, this would be much better if it was on HBO, Starz, etc.

Still, though, I'm a big enough fan of Dr. Lecter that I'll give it a watch.

Graveland 02-28-2013 01:34 PM

Damn I was hoping this was about the son of Hamilcar Barca.

I totally agree.

Nice cast...too bad it is on NBC.

td_ice 02-28-2013 09:33 PM

Damn, saw the title and thought it was about Hannibal Buress.

The first 14 reviews are out on Metacritic. A couple very high grades and some low ones as well.. will probably check it out regardless.

Mads Mikkelsen is awesome, but he's at his best when he has a sword in hand.

I would remove the best and worst scores and average it all out.

Pilots are usually tough to gauge because there's a lot of premise-setting that needs to be done, I'll watch it though, do doubt.

Oilbleeder 04-05-2013 01:09 PM

Anyone else catch it last night?

I watched it and I really enjoyed it. I'll be watching against next week.

Bubba Thudd 04-05-2013 01:12 PM

I missed it. I'm hoping it'll be "On Demand" so I can watch tonight.

jumptheshark 04-05-2013 01:12 PM

reminds me too much of the following and dexter

Also--the main detective is too much like Holmes from Sherlock Holmes on CBS

it is almost like they looked at 8 shows and took characters from them and put them into this show

I'm not sure if you have read "Red Dragon" or not (great book, better than the great movie) but he is portraying Will Graham better than Norton. He is supposed to be emotionally and mentally unstable, which he wasn't in the movie. (Although to be fair this show is set 6 years before the movie, which only deals with the tooth fairy case)

Bruv 04-05-2013 04:47 PM

Missed it as well.. completely bombed in ratings, not surprised really.

1.6 rating with 4.36 million viewers overall.

I've watched it and it reminded me of neither of these shows.

The main detective bears a physical resemblance with Holmes from Sherlock Holmes but that pretty much stops there.

It is almost like you see what you want to see. I think you forgot to say it was a filler episode.

I caught about 20 minutes of it. Looked pretty good.

Just watched the first episode. Nothing groundbreaking but Mads Mikkelsen is absolutely outstanding.

I think Norton portrayed some of that. Maybe just a little more subtle.

I'm a big fan of Manhunter and I have read Red Dragon. I'm not a big fan of the Red Dragon film adaptation of 2002.

That said I think that the Hannibal pilot was entertaining enough to satisfy me. The Metacritic score of 68/100 sounds about right. So far, anyway. It takes time for a TV series to really gel, so I expect things will improve as time goes on.

This is really Will Graham's story, as it was in the book, and it does him a bit of a disservice to name the show Hannibal. I know that the Lecter character has become far, far more memorable to the general TV and movie-watching audience, so it's a concession I'm willing to live with.

I think Hugh Dancy does an admirable job as Graham, although I'm not sure if I like the characterization so far. The Graham of the book and of Manhunter was much more intense. I got the feeling he was only a few steps away from becoming a serial killer himself, whereas Dancy's Graham is, as he said, "closer to the Asperger's/austism end of the spectrum". He reminds me more of the character of 'Spencer Reid' from Criminal Minds than the Graham I know. The Will Graham here seems fearful, whereas the Will Graham of the book and of Manhunter was fearsome; he was creepy and off-putting whereas Dancy's Graham is very meek and, so far, very much a 'fraidy-cat. I look forward to finding out what they do with the character.

I'm a little scared of what they end up doing with the pacing of the show. I figured they'd do it such that one season = one case, like The Wire was. I didn't expect them to catch Garrett Jacob Hobbs so early, and I'm not sure if the show will be better for it. I think the show will fall apart if it's "serial-killer-of-the-week" la Criminal Minds. I think it needs to be about the main characters more than about the killer(s).

Just finished the pilot, enjoyed it a lot. Amazingly acted, well shot, well conceived. Now, it's been a long time since I've read Red Dragon, but I very much liked that book and the character of Graham which is why I'm really going to get into this series. A show with Clarice Starling would've been interesting, considering her odd friendship with Lecter, but I do like the premise of Hannibal.

Was hoping it was an A-Team prequel.
