Vancouver claims Tom Sestito

per Ryan Rishaug

Rivet52 03-01-2013 11:10 AM

A few people called this. Makes sense after losing Volpatti. They had the roster space and a contract slot.

bennysflyers16 03-01-2013 11:10 AM

Damn,,,,, at least he is in western conference. I am surprised he got all the way down the waiver wire to Vancouver ? I thought Edmonton or Calgary would claim him for sure.

I think he will be able to be an effective 4th liner that hits like a truck and can bring some toughness to Nucks,

John McClane 03-01-2013 11:10 AM

Should I be happy or angry about this?

McDonald19 03-01-2013 11:10 AM

So they traded Volpatti for Sestito. Why?

That's the million dollar question.

He scores more points. :sarcasm:

LPH 03-01-2013 11:15 AM

seems like a lateral swap at best

Horvat2Virtanen 03-01-2013 11:18 AM

Sestito is bigger and hits more than Volpatti. Anyway whatever seems like neither lateral or progressive movement. I guess MG thought Volpatti would clear waivers.

They clearly thought he was going to clear?

caley 03-01-2013 11:18 AM

I think Vancouver might be banking on Sestito's past potential. In the book 'Future Greats and Heartbreaks', Gare Joyce mentions what a dynamic junior player Sestito is and that Columbus over the course of the season is offered a 1st round pick for him, but won't deal him. A concussion in the AHL seems to have really derailed his potential.

ouch, he has concussion history, didn't know that.

Gillis seems to like his potential reclamation projects.

We'll have to see how this one pans out.

I definitely don't think he planned to lose Volpatti.

Sestito is an actual tough guy. He's not the greatest fighter, but at least he tries. You might be less likely to see this with Sestito on the ice:

And more likely to see this:

Chara clearly gets the better of Sestito, but at least you get Chara off the ice for 5+ minutes, without your own player requiring a hospital stay.

HawksTillDeath 03-01-2013 11:24 AM

wonder how many Hawks he's gonna take out

RJ8812 03-01-2013 11:24 AM

What a stupid move by Holmgren. Yet, they keep Knuble on the roster

Sestito is probably better than Knuble in my opinion.

SiCKNESS 03-01-2013 11:27 AM

I dont mind this, Sestito is Younger, Bigger and more of a physical presence than Volpatti, solid defensivley and much better hands than Volpatti.

Reign Nateo 03-01-2013 11:30 AM

Had a 40+ goal year in the OHL if I remember right. But does a similar job as Volpatti but with much better size.

CookieCrumbs* 03-01-2013 11:32 AM

Volpatti had decent enough hands. This guys fight record isn't great, but if he hits like a truck I'm into it. Any Flyers fans wanna weigh in on this?

25Bieksa3 03-01-2013 11:37 AM

I have actually liked watching Sestito the few times I have seen him play. I think, at first glance, that this is an upgrade over Volpatti.

No probably, Knuble is awful and serves no purpose and can not keep up with NHL players in any role. Nucks got a solid 4th liner and prob is toughest Canuck !

He is devastating on the forecheck. When he was in Columbus, defensemen seemed absolutely afraid when he was forechecking them. I distinctly remember one game vs. the Rangers where McDonough, Girardi and Staal wanted nothing to do with him.

I remember telling my wife, when Sestito is out there, he is intimidating the Rangers blue-liners like I've rarely seen anyone do.

LPH 03-01-2013 11:42 AM

Put me firmly in the group that wants to see Sesito and Kassian on the same line

LPH 03-01-2013 11:42 AM

how is his speed?
