GAME PREVIEW

CAPITALS (7-11-1) at JETS (10-9-1)

TV: NHLN-US, CBC, CSN-DC

Last 10: Washington 5-5-0; Winnipeg 6-4-0

Season series: Winnipeg won the first meeting of the season Jan. 22 at Verizon Center, and the Jets have won four straight against the Capitals. The next time Washington travels to Winnipeg, the two teams will play at MTS Centre on back-to-back nights.

Big story: The Jets could end the day in first place in the Southeast Division, while the Capitals have to rebound from an ugly loss in Philadelphia.

Team Scope:

Capitals: Washington won five of seven games and looked to be on the verge of rebounding from a terrible 2-8-1 start -- but one night at Wells Fargo Center did a lot to kill that momentum. The Philadelphia Flyers rolled to a 4-0 lead and cruised to an easy win, pushing the Capitals back into last place in the Eastern Conference.

Alex Ovechkin strung together a few good games in a row, but NBCSN analyst Mike Milbury blasted him during the second intermission of the Flyers game for poor effort and embellishing a hit. Defenseman Mike Green returned after missing nearly two weeks with a groin injury, but after playing in back-to-back games he is out after aggravating it.

The Capitals claimed grinder Aaron Volpatti on waivers from Vancouver, and he is likely to make his debut for Washington against Winnipeg. Matt Hendricks is expected to move up to the top line after Jason Chimera had been there for several games without scoring a goal.

Jets: Two weeks ago Winnipeg was in danger of falling into the basement in the East; now, the Jets are now trying to claim the division lead. Five wins in six games, including four away from home, have Winnipeg level with Carolina at 21 points.

The Jets were dynamite at home (23-13-5) in 2011-12, but this season they are 4-5-1 at MTS Centre and 6-4-0 on the road. The offensive is clicking as the Jets have scored at least three goals in five straight games. Captain Andrew Ladd it tied for fourth in the League with 12 goals, and Evander Kane is one of only two players (along with Pittsburgh's Chris Kunitz) to have at least seven goals and 50 hits.

Who's hot: Mike Ribeiro has 14 points in the past 11 games for the Capitals. … Ladd has four goals and seven points in the past five games for the Jets.

Injury report: Green (groin) is out for the Capitals, along with Brooks Laich (groin), Marcus Johansson (upper body) and Jack Hillen (upper body). Winnipeg will be without defensemen Tobias Enstrom (shoulder) and Zach Redmond (leg).

First! Very nice work benny

allan5oh 03-02-2013 12:05 AM

nice GDT!

StaticPrevails 03-02-2013 12:08 AM

Wicked GDT Benny! 3-0 shutout loss for the Сдрітдфs, Peluso gets his first.

DespoticNewt 03-02-2013 12:08 AM

Pfft. Hockey "Night" in Canada. We don't have one primetime CBC game this year. I'm not that annoyed, seeing as I prefer TSN over CBC, but it would be nice to get some national recognition. I'm floored that Toranah doesn't play tomorrow night.

Winnipeg Jets 03-02-2013 12:10 AM

Nice GDT bud! Go Jets Go!

teebanas 03-02-2013 12:14 AM

I'm 1-2-0 at the MTS centre .. So hopefully I don't jinx this one

Sweech 03-02-2013 12:16 AM

Sweet BDT!

It's possibly we see Welly back this game. Slide Peluso down and scratch Thor for Wellwood?

allan5oh 03-02-2013 12:20 AM

We lose every time I wear my jersey and win every time I don't. It will be staying home.

Bob E 03-02-2013 12:22 AM

Just noticed 1/3 or our forwards are new to the team this year, but they are all in the bottom 6. Just didn't see that coming.

Going into the season, i wouldn't have said that. Would have thought for this team to challenge for a playoff spot, there would have had to be changes in the top 6, or with the guys getting bigger minutes.

Tom ServoMST3K 03-02-2013 12:24 AM

Jets 6 capitals 1,

Bogo and the Hains with 3g3a each for the double hatty and hains tips in one on our own net

Just the tip in baby, just the tip.

Offside?

Turbofan 03-02-2013 12:39 AM

Debbie-downer prediction. Jets come out flat, 0-3 Caps win.

You might of not.. but I did :)

I said the team didn't have to change... just needed a >0.915 sv% avg which is last seasons average (or have as many games as possible above 0.900).
This team is (barely) above average and therefore it lives and die at the goaltending.

So far for Pavelec:
0.930 in wins
0.875 in loses

So far for Montoya:
0.931 in wins
0.783 in loses

In games where Jets' get goaltending at or above 0.900 (which is well below league average):
8-1-1

In games where Jets' get goaltending below 0.900:
2-8-0

I also said that we'd need our top4 D to be healthy too >_< that didn't work out so well...

knorthern knight 03-02-2013 12:59 AM

Arrrgh. Gotta leave my place around 3:15PM EST (2:15PM CST), so I'll only catch the first few minutes of the game. Hopefully the Jets get their standard early goal.

Jet 03-02-2013 01:01 AM

Nice BDT Benny!!!

I want to believe that the Jets have learned from their mistakes and will take this amazing 5 game opportunity in front of them, but they have fooled me too many times.

I will nervously hope for a good effort tomorrow.

GO JETS GO!

I was with you until that, that's just too farfetched! :sarcasm:

Sweech 03-02-2013 01:11 AM

I can't wait for Enstrom to be back.

YWGinYYZ 03-02-2013 01:20 AM

Very nice GDT Benny! :handclap:

No predictions. Just provide me with entertainment, please.

Go :jets Go!

Why be bitter though? Because of one bad stretch? I mean they made it to the cup finals last year. Had a great run. Still several games above .500 this year. 6 division championships in the last 10 years. 3 Stanley Cup wins in the last 20 years. I mean that's not a super-dynasty but that's well above the curve, and pretty rewarding if you've been a fan for the last 20 years.
Because sports fans are notoriously short sighted. Their history doesn't mean anything over how bad the team has played lately. They are 2-6 in their last 8 games played. Tell any sports fan to be positive after that. Look at how MTL reacted last year.

Feeling most confident. 3-1 Jets. Burmi with all 3 goals, with great assists from Hainsey in part to the inspiration of Confusion Corner for passing skills.

Lynk 03-02-2013 02:09 AM

Jerts wern 6 ter 1.
Rern Hernsey scers 6 gerls.

Yeah I'm so excited to see our full healthy D line-up one day  Imagine how much even better we'd be with

Enström - Buff
Hainsey - Bogo
Stuart - Postma
Clitsome

and everyone is 100% healthy and ready to give 110% effort.

one can dream

I have a very good feeling about this game again and predict a 4-1 win. On the other hand, it'd be time for a shutout I think ;)

Kent C Tugood 03-02-2013 03:04 AM

4-2 Jets.

Peluso, Wright, and Hainsey with a couple.

If this comes true, I'll buy a round for everyone in this thread.
