Caps sign, recall D Steven Oleksy

@SWhyno: #Caps will recall Hershey defenseman Steven Olesky for tomorrow's game vs. #Bruins. He has team-high 151 PIM.

@RenLavoieRDS: Capitals signed D Steven Oleksy (27 years old/ first contract) 3 years / $542 000 avg (2 way)

@VogsCaps: Oleksy contract info: three years (incl '12-13), two-way each season. NHL: $525K, $550K and $550K. AHL: $95K, $110K and $110K. #Caps

Green to IR being the logical roster move. Another righty.

calicapsfan 03-04-2013 07:59 PM

caps sign Olesky for tomorrow, per Whyno's twitter. more thuggery. who sits?

Capitlols 03-04-2013 08:01 PM

Any Hershey fans with a scouting report?

NobodyBeatsTheWiz 03-04-2013 08:04 PM

That's a productive use of a contract slot.

I mean, if the Caps didn't get Steven Oleksy signed long-term, he'd likely be poached in the UFA market and I'm not sure how the organization would recover.

RandyHolt 03-04-2013 08:06 PM

George like many here saw our lineup was embarrassingly soft and is addressing it rather quickly. Way to go George!

A RH shot D man with toughness - its been a while since we had one.

?
Alzner Kundratek
Erksine Carlson
Poti Olesky

Maybe we sit Crabb and lace up Ole at RW, or go with 7 D

RandyHolt 03-04-2013 08:12 PM

Sure Green and Orlov's injuries are in play here, but I think its more than that.

George is finally getting tired of our soft as butter defense. Showing the entire organization that if you want to commit to the extent a fighter does, you can land a 2 or 3 year contract. First Erksine, lands Volpatti, and now Olesky. I like the message he is sending.

I still want him to see a Mr Softee moved out, for the max effect on everyone in the org.

Liberati0n* 03-04-2013 08:12 PM

Can he play at all?

Adding fringe players who can fight isn't really addressing the problem. The players who have to go out and win the games need to be tougher. Adding toughness at the margins of the lineup does help somewhat, but it doesn't address the fundamental issues.

He can only address issues one at a time.

And I will go ahead and wager that the star players will now actually play with much more confidence, fearless, a playoff look, having 2 new guys in our lineup that WILL have everyone's backs.

Watch for it.

I think a fundamental problem of the team is that most play scared of the opposition. They just hang on for dear life and try to survive. Actually taking the play to the opposition = minds blown.

Langway 03-04-2013 08:26 PM

He reminds me a bit of Engelland. He's smaller obviously but plays bigger, although I'm not sure he'll be able to as successfully at the NHL level. Decent skater and hands for the AHL level.

It probably says more about Stafford and the rest of the Washington depth D than anything. Handedness is nice and all but not essential.

Now for Mitchell & Crabb to switch places...

CrashTheNet9 03-04-2013 08:26 PM

Hopefully Oleksy is on the ice when Perreault gets picked on for the third game in a row.

RandyHolt 03-04-2013 08:39 PM

+1 call up Mitchell and get more crazy in the lineup.

Anyone think George watched that B's game last night?

I think it should be an unwritten rule in hockey, that if you are the worst team in the league, you have to ice a bunch of goons so at least the fans of tough hockey may be enticed to pay to see your lame duck team. I was always surprised how weak our 1970's teams were. Poor Yvon Labre.

I dont know jack about Ole but suspect he was also inked for 3 years in part because he is a RH shot, and there is clearly a shortage of them in George's eyes.

I totally agree. If you're going to lose atleast don't get pushed around doing so. I would have liked them picking up Sestito also.

Earth shattering, franchise foundation shaking moves I tell ya...

If he plays with an edge I'm on board. I'd rather play guys who look like they actually hate losing instead of the ones who have been passively accepting it.

AlexBrovechkin8 03-04-2013 09:13 PM

As long as I never see 55-3 paired together again I'm cool. Would like to see some violence tempered towards the other team for a change.

Green, killin' me bro.

i hope they're planning on him spending a lot of time in Hershey.

Eric Scheib 03-04-2013 09:53 PM

Yes, Olesky will bring toughness. Cameron Schilling is much better, but doesn't bring the toughness and I think the Caps want him to get a full season in the AHL. I'd compare Olesky with Erskine, but Olesky has shown a bit of offensive upside lately. Personally, I think Kevin Marshall could have filled the same role without the need to sign a player.

Brad Tolliver 03-04-2013 11:14 PM

The shoving grinders into the lineup strategy has worked so well at forward, GMGM figures he might as well start doing that on defense too.

He'll need to bring his glove for the warm up.

What a waste of a contract slot. And for three years!?! :shakehead

Have Green and Orlov on the mend, and Wey coming after the BC season ends. Not sure the need to sign a useless depth RD.

It's okay. They can just use an amnesty buyout on him if they need the contract slot.

RandyHolt 03-05-2013 05:33 AM

George clearly sees some potential in the kid. Lets see him in a game before we bash a contract for 550K. We know Dmen dont come into their own until their later 20's, and its not like he inked him for 4 x 2.75.

He is George's fav a RH shot with toughness and a little bit of offense. If that is not worth 550K, what is it worth? George is thinking that the contract will look good in a year or 2.... ok just like he did when inking Sarge

At least Olesky can fall back on protecting teammates if his skills don't develop more.
