Kontiola was selected to Finland's national team's first camp

Petri Kontiola (round 7 #196 overall 2004 NHL Entry Draft) was selected to Finland's national team's first camp on the road towards the World championships.

Here's the squad:

Goaltenders:
Fredrik Norrena, Linköping
Teemu Lassila, TPS

Defensemen:
Petteri Nummelin, Lugano
Toni Söderholm, HIFK
Tuukka Mäntylä, Luulaja
Pekka Saravo, Tappara
Pasi Puistola, Tappara
Jere Karalahti, HIFK
Jyrki Välivaara, Linköping
Olli Malmivaara, SaiPa (Selected by Chicago Blackhawks round 4 #117 overall 2000 NHL Entry Draft)

Forwards:
Jarkko Immonen, JYP
Lasse Pirjetä, HIFK
Petri Kontiola, Tappara
Ville Peltonen, Lugano
Jukka Hentunen, Fribourg
Timo Pärssinen, HIFK
Mikko Eloranta, Rapperswil
Ville Nieminen, Tappara
Jarkko Ruutu, HIFK
Kimmo Kuhta, HIFK
Hannes Hyvönen, Ilves

Most likely he won't be selected to the final squad, but of course there's always a chance (a small chance but still). I personally see his selection as a reward of a good season he played.

Petri's
regular season stats: 54gp 8g+17a=25pts ,+6, 26pims (6th in team scoring)

playoffs stats: 8gp 2g+2a=4pts ,+1, 2pims (2nd in team scoring)

The upcoming games will be career first for Malmivaara as well, which is just as noteworthy now that he has been resurrecting his status as a legitimate NHL prospect.

We've had brief updates on Olli as well, basically saying that he plays on the first d unit for Saipa.

Is he skating better? That to me looked like the thing that would really hold him back (that and he wasn't all that physical for a guy his size). Now I have only seen him a handful of times, but most of us here had written him off until this season.

Nice to see he's coming around a bit.. he certainly has the size to play in the NHL.

Not notably, but he's having less trouble with his mobility since he's doing the right things more often. The same connection to hockey sense goes with his physical bias, which hasn't changed that much either.

I remember reading in an interview that Malmivaara is very interested in crossing the pond after the CBA situation is cleared.
