Leafs-Islanders

TO TOR: John Tavares + Rick Dipietro (to be bought out)

TO NYI: Phil Kessel + Jake Gardiner + Tyler Bozak + Joe Colborne/Carter Ashton

Leafs pay the price for their #1 centreman. It costs them lots of talent and millions in a Dipietro buyout to get it done. They give up similar point production in Kessel and lose a potential top pairing offensive defender in Gardiner. Kessel's buddy Bozak and a forward prospect sweeten the deal.

Islanders get similar production out of Kessel and add a bluechip blueliner to their team. Isles ownership pockets the ~36 million owed to Dipietro which in turn makes the team easier to sell. Americans Kessel and Gardiner easy to market and still put butts in seats until the team moves to a new arena.

I was inspired by Lindros/Gretzky style trades involving lots of money being components of the deal and possibly the only reason why a team like the Islanders would move Tavares in a blockbuster.

CharasInCharge 03-07-2013 04:57 AM

Leafs would be overpaying and I still don't think the Isles would do it.

IrishPaulie 03-07-2013 05:03 AM

Overpayment but the Isles likely still say no. Kessel is a real good player but I think most teams have learned from Burkes mistake that trying to build around a scoring winger is a lot tougher than building around a very good center.

BonkTastic 03-07-2013 05:16 AM

Tavares is one of those guys who just won't get dealt unless he demands his way out of town (Heatley), or the owner can't afford him anymore and needs to sell him for cash (Gretzky).

In the event Tavares ever demanded out of Long Island, OP's offer might be close, value-wise. Knowing the Isles, they might want more picks and less Colborne/Ashton.

Wanderson 03-07-2013 05:17 AM

Close this thread. Tavares won't get traded.

Xamboni 03-07-2013 06:00 AM

Why do people keep making trade offers like this?

.... or the Leafs could just keep their assets and take their chances at the up-coming draft to get what they need/want (which is probably the best thing for them to do right now). :)

The Lefs are already helping the Islanders via revenue-sharing. They're not going to put more money into Wang's pocket by trading for a an injury-prone goaltender they don't need only to buy him out (even if Tavares were to come with him).

It's not good asset management on the Leafs' part when you consider that they already have contracts on their books that they may need to buy out if said contracts can't be traded. There's no sense wasting a compliance buy-out if you don't need to.

Not an overpayment...not yet...this would require multiple first rounders, and the likes of a trade package the NHL hasn't seen before.

Why?

Draft lottery rules changing.

Think Kessel, Gardiner, 2013, 2014, 2015 firsts...

No single player is worth 3+ first round picks, especially considering that the draft rules have changed.

Morlu 03-07-2013 07:53 AM

Lol Kessel, Gardiner and 3 1sts lol.

I agree, that's probably what it will cost. He's an excellent young center and if you support him with better wingers you will vastly elevate his point totals.

Pi 03-07-2013 08:26 AM

I wish money deals were allowed...the Leafs make enough profit, just trade half of that to get an elite center.

I don't think we need Tavares for the price it would cost. It's just not realistic.

Eh, if I knew my team was going to be good, and I mean "top-10-or-better" good, for the next 3 years, and knew those 1st rounders were going to be in the... say 24-30 range? I'd move three 1st rounders for Tavares in a heartbeat.

I mean, you need to be confident that your team is elite, and that the picks probably won't be lottery picks, but I could make a case where three 1sts for a player makes sense.

Porn* 03-07-2013 08:43 AM

**** no

kasper11 03-07-2013 09:03 AM

First, there is almost no way the Isles trade Tavares.

Second, this package wouldn't come close. Not that the players aren't good, but Bozak is a UFA after this year and Kessel after next. The Isles are looking for long-term success, and having just Gardiner and a center prospect who would be the third best center prospect on the Isles (behind Strome and Nelson) at best is a serious downgrade for the future. The Isles are much, much better off keeping the star signed for five years after this.

daveleaf 03-07-2013 09:07 AM

Tavares will never get traded. Whatever season ticket holders they do have would turn all their tickets in. He is the best player in an Islander uniform that has been drafted by them since Bossy, Trottier and Gillies.

Really? Unless we are talking top-10 picks, you have about a 50% chance of getting a legit NHL player with a first. So you are talking about 1-2 NHL players for a superstar.

Other than the teams that have been consistently bottom-5 (and even some of them), I think for the majority of teams you will find that if you look at any three-straight first round picks you would trade them for Tavares in a heartbeat.

Heck, the Isles have drafted top-6 three straight years, and I would probably trade Nino, Strome and Reinhart for a 22 year old ppg+ player signed to a reasonable deal for five years after this. And I like the Isles prospects.

So few picks turn into true stars or even above-average players, if you have a chance to get a true star you have to do it.

Yes, Toronto got burned by giving up two very high picks, both of which have developed very well so far. But the problem with the Kessel trade wasn't that he wasn't worth the price, the problem was Toronto was the wrong team to pay it. They didn't have a team in place around Kessel that would allow them to succeed. Adding a player like Tavares now would be the opposite (assuming they re-sign Kessel and Bozak long term).

SLAPSHOT723 03-07-2013 09:31 AM

Are you trying to be funny? Because even that isn't working.

19NYSports91 03-07-2013 09:51 AM

Any trade proposals involving John Tavares, please just close the thread.

How orginal. Never seen such a fantasy proposal before.:sarcasm:

Wang bought out Yashin, when Yashin had more money left on his contract. He's bought out Witt and Bates. DiPietro's buyout, is a very affordable $1.5m per.

Isles will go into Brooklyn, with Tavares as the face of the franchise, the big ticket draw.

Here's a novel idea... why don't the Leafs draft and develop their own #1 center?

therealkoho 03-07-2013 09:57 AM

.........and so then the guy says, and I swear this is true!

"I've always like coddled eggs and whole wheat toast and a big glass of chocolate milk"

and just like magic

Gardiner's the only thing of longterm value in that offer.
Kessel's an impending ufa, rumored to be seeking $7m-$8m. I don't think he's worth that kind of money.

Bozak's a huge downgrade and Joe Colborne/Carter Ashton are meh prospects, no better then what Snow already has.

If the isles were to move Tavares, I'd want Stamkos back, not a bunch of quantity.

StrongIslanders90 03-07-2013 10:32 AM

Just stop it....I wouldnt trade Tavares for the leafs whole team, 5 first rounders, and them taking Dipietros contract....

Quality not Quantity.....

DesertDawg 03-07-2013 10:44 AM

Leafs have a better chance winning the lottery than being able to acquire Tavares

seafoam 03-07-2013 11:09 AM

The Islanders are John Tavares, he is not going anywhere.
