Logjam at Center: Solution?

With Giroux, Schenn, and Coots, plus Laughton coming up eventually, what do you guys propose we do at center?

The easy thing I have seen thrown around is Schenn to wing, but he has looked FAR better at center.

Coots isn't gonna get moved in all likely hood cause of his defensive ability.

And I can't see Giroux getting moved (though it'd be interesting...) from center.

So what does everyone see happening? Clearly pure speculation at this point.

GKJ 03-07-2013 10:10 PM

I think it's clear they want Schenn to be a winger

RoDu 03-07-2013 10:12 PM

I don't see Schenn moving to wing until Couts offensive game advances

TheLegendkiller 03-07-2013 10:14 PM

Make them centers 1-4. That'll work for a few years.

Norm MacDonald 03-07-2013 10:25 PM

It's not really a log jam. At this point, Schenn is a good second line center and Couturier is a great third line center. Holmgren can reevaluate the situation if it ever becomes a cap problem, but there's no reason to worry about having too many talented centers at this point.

flyersfan187 03-07-2013 10:27 PM

It is never a bad thing to have a lot of capable centers.

mm6492 03-07-2013 10:47 PM

Ok I clearly knew its not a bad thing. But if Laughton comes up next year or the year after, we need an end plan. Is it making Schenn a winger?

Jtown 03-07-2013 10:51 PM

it could be as simple as laughton playing the wing.

Prongo 03-07-2013 11:20 PM

I think we have to wait a few before deciding this. Laughton should get another year in juniors IMO. Two years from now nobody knows what this team will look like, but we don't need to worry about this right now. Also if Laughton does make the team next year, he will get coots treatment or even convert to wing if need be. It seems like schenn is most suitable for the wing though. But like I said something that really doesn't worry me right now

dats81 03-08-2013 12:39 AM

Besides Giroux noone can win a faceoff if his life was depending on it.

They need to bring in a Veteran 4th line Center. Laughton stays in Junior or is traded in a package for a first pairing defenseman or a shoot first Veteran winger. And even if this doesn't materialize, convert Laughton into a shutdown winger.

Just my two cents...

They cant win faceoffs cause they're rookies and second year players. You don't get good at faceoffs for a few years.

And that's why the 4th line center spot needs to be filled with a capable Veteran next season, and not S. Laughton imho.

Indeed, they really do miss that veteran specialist.

Is he still crazy though lol?

McNasty 03-08-2013 08:32 AM

Couturier isn't playing well enough for this to really be a log jam atm, let them cross that bridge when they get there.

Tripod 03-08-2013 08:44 AM

I just hope Couts is signed to a nice bridge contract...not a JVR type one.

DrHamburg 03-08-2013 09:45 AM

you have time to figure it out. Next season are big years for Schenn and Couts. Maybe Couts doesn't develop offensively and is going to be just a shutdown 3rd line center? Schenn right now in a 82 game season would be on pace for about 60 points. Schenn could be a 65 point, two center next season. With Laughton being called up next season, you are going to be able to have him 3 years in a 4th line and injury move up role.

Another thing though is the FO%. Schenn and Couts are both really bad. around 42%. Those numbers have to improve. What if Couts just turns into a really good shutdown player and is moved to wing? There are a lot of options right now and that is a good thing.

Trade someone. Maybe two someones. I personally am sick of this "you can never have too many centers" philosophy. The Flyers have had an excess of centers going back to when Briere arrived, and what has it gotten them. They've tried pretty much everyone at wing at some point, and has anyone actually looked good there? Not as far as I can see. Our best wingers are... actual wingers: Hartnell, Simmonds, Read, Voracek, and Gagne (still).

Trade from a position of strength (center) to address a position of weakness (defense). Please, Homer.

Problem is if right value in deals don't happen, a trade can't be made.

The only center that would land us a legimate #1 defensemen is Couts.
No one will give us a #1 D man for Laughton.
Brayden Schenn could be packaged for a #1 D man but with what you would have to add is probably not worth it. Besides if you trade Brayden I'd slightly worry about Luke, I know its a business but playing with your brother in the NHL is a dream come true. Trading your brother because you aren't the #1 dman the team wants could be a problem.
Giroux can get you a #1 D Man, but then you go from strong at center to very young and all potential based.
So basically Couts is the only one. You can probably get Myers straight up. Not sure I want him. Who else would move a #1? It is always a great idea in theory, but what teams are like "Cannot wait to trade our #1 Defensemen"

Well, this is why Homer gets the big money. I expect that the Flyers would have to give up Couts+ to get a bona-fide #1, if one is somehow available. I would be ok with that, though it would hurt. If you can't get a real #1 type guy, you can still try to get someone with mobility and the ability to move the puck and create some offense. Even that might mean losing a player we'd rather not lose, but there is a real need on the blue line and it will only get worse when Timonen retires.

He signed a 2 year deal I believe in the off season.

Konopka is a horrible player. He knows how to do one thing, win draws. Anything else is embarrassing.

Not going to get a no. 1 D. Probably have to go the Devils, Canucks, Rangers route, and create a competent group 1-6.
