Gilbert Trade After a Year

Just wondering what the thoughts are on this. Clearly schultz has been exposed. This guy is a total hack. At least Gilbert could move the puck and be somewhat creative. This guys idea of an outlet pass is whacking it off the wall just hard enough to tee it up for the opposing team. Anyways, think Tambi got the short end of that one.

Several of us at the time said it was a stupid trade. You don't trade a puck moving D-man with his offensive upside for a stay at home, 3 to 4 minute less a night, steady D-man with no physical side to hiis game. Once again, Tamblowe got OWNED!

Minni must love the Oilers ... first Brodziak for nothing, then Gilbert for a has been.

Unbelievable how dumb our management is.

FIRE TAMBLOWE !!!

Awful trade.

Replacement 03-09-2013 12:34 PM

Sign me up. Everybody knows my thoughts since the deal went down.

Mr Forever 03-09-2013 12:35 PM

Trading a pretty good player when his value was at his lowlest. Poor asset management.

Declassified 03-09-2013 12:35 PM

I liked Gilbert, wish he was still an Oiler

Asher 03-09-2013 12:36 PM

Didn't like it at the time, haven't changed my mind since then.

NewOilRising 03-09-2013 12:38 PM

Gilbert's a plug, so neither team really won or lost.

Ramrod 03-09-2013 12:38 PM

Traded a #3 for a #5.

jadeddog 03-09-2013 12:41 PM

i actually do not mind the trade, never have really.... i think both teams came away fairly satisfied with the player they got... neither is exactly ripping up the league, and both are essentially the players that we all thought they were

i guess you might give minny the slight edge because PMD are a little harder to find, but it would really only be a slight edge (if it exists at all)

dnicks17 03-09-2013 12:42 PM

I'd be curious to see what Gilbert would look like in Krueger's "system".

OilDrop37 03-09-2013 12:42 PM

Can't stand Gilbert, soft as butter and a turnover machine. Both teams got hosed. That being said, I wouldn't shed a tear if they were traded back for each other.

GreatKeith 03-09-2013 12:45 PM

Schultz looked decent under renney then we change coaches and he looks like a disaster

alphahelix 03-09-2013 12:55 PM

I was away when that trade happened, found it kind of shocking but people seemed to like it (for some reason). No way in hell I would have done it.

Both players are soft and turnover machines. Gilbert at least could log big minutes and chip in offensively.

Not much substance to this post.

The defence this season has been burdened by an over matched forward group.

When Gilbert was here the kids were not playing tough minutes like they are this year. That puts excessive pressure on the d core.

When Gilbert was here the team had 2 less rookies to deal with. That also puts pressure on the d core.

When you add the fact that Renney matched lines and Kruger doesn't that ramps up the burden on the d core even more.

This is an apples and oranges comparison in terms of the rosters/systems between this season and last season.

Gilbert's defense in front of the net is as poor as Whitney's is now. Have been glad to get rid of him.

Tarus 03-09-2013 02:15 PM

A non-physical puckmoving defenseman who couldn't move the puck, produce offense, or defend, for a non-physical defensive defenseman who is medicore at defense.

Meh trade then, meh trade now.

nitz 03-09-2013 02:22 PM

I was willing to have a "wait and see" approach to that trade but it seems pretty clear to me that I'd rather have Gilbert now.

Koto 03-09-2013 02:26 PM

hated it when happened

moved to just disliking it.

hate it again.

This, basically.

I was indifferent at the time of the trade, but now seeing Nick Schultz consistently overmatched shows how much we miss a defenseman capable of eating minutes.

Sure Schultz blocks shots and is capable in the defensive zone and a fairly solid skater. But he doesn't possess a lick of offense.

Gilbert was a shot blocking machine. Skating was decent and was a guy that played in all scenarios - including the powerplay.

Smid - Gilbert
Whitney - J Schultz
Fistric - Petry
Peckham - Potter

looks substantially better than

N Schultz - J Schultz
Smid - Petry
Whitney - Fistric
Peckham - Potter

My thoughts as well.

Beerfish 03-09-2013 03:38 PM

My question is this. We have been shuffling around the forward lines all year and yet we keep subjecting our best young d man to a partner that is pure awful and does virtually nothing well.

Why the hell have they not moved J Schultz to smid and told him to just go for it and tell smid to not take any chances.

Brain dead coaching on this team.

raab 03-09-2013 04:06 PM

Didn't like it at the time, but gave management the benefit of the doubt. Still don't like it and want management fired!

flashy 03-09-2013 04:10 PM

Shultz is dead last in the league with a -15 plus/minus.

awesome.
