Kunitz Selke Canidate?

It seems they give awards like this to players who have some scoring to go along with their defense. With his 2 way play, could Chris Kunitz be a finalist for the selke award.

I'm going to say yes, he could be a finalist but probabbly not win in the end.

domaug* 03-11-2013 07:42 AM

ehh i don't think Kunitz is Selke material necessarily

spcastlemagic 03-11-2013 07:44 AM

Just the Rocket Richard is fine.

Kunitz is good defensively, but isn't a guy who shuts down opposition players. His real skill on defense lies in his ability to transition from defense to offense and make quality exits consistently. These are things that make your coach happy but don't really resonate with Selke voters.

Koempel 03-11-2013 07:48 AM

Kunitz is decent defensively for sure, but not Selke quality in my opinion. Could be wrong, but I don't see him as a take-away maestro. Also, it seems every now and then he just misses his assignment and the guy he is supposed to be guarding has a free tap in.

plaidchuck 03-11-2013 08:00 AM

Yeah doubt it will ever happen, to be nominated you have to pretty much have an established rep as being a two-way guy.

BreakfastatMarios 03-11-2013 08:06 AM

My thoughts on it are, Having his best offensive output ever.

Always dubbed as that guy who does the dirty work for both Crosby, and Last year, Malkins line. "He goes into the dirty areas" as the announcers like to say.

I think he has a great shot at being the 3rd person nominated.

Now he has Sock Monkee Power so the skys the limit.

IcedCapp 03-11-2013 08:13 AM

I don't even know what the Selke is for anymore, but I know Kunitz won't even get top-3 consideration for it.

MetalheadPenguinsFan 03-11-2013 08:23 AM

Not to be a party-pooper or to downplay the beyond amazing season that the Koon is having right now but....

Do we really think he can outscore Stamkos and win the Rocket???? Really???

Personally I'd be happy with 25-30 goals from him. Anything else is just a wonderful surprise.

No matter what though, if the season were to end tomorrow, I (and we all) will and should be damn proud of him for this amazing season he's had y'know? :)

SirBrad 03-11-2013 08:27 AM

too bad this isn't an 82 game season because Kunitz putting up a 100 point season would be something out of this world.

But yeah, don't think he's a finalist for the Selke.

You see there's this guy Kunitz plays with...

Weakside Lock 03-11-2013 08:32 AM

I wouldn't consider him a Selke candidate. He's a well-rounded player, but lacks the defensive prowess of others.

Killswitch7187 03-11-2013 08:34 AM

Now, now. We wouldn't want other fanbases to s*** the bed too much, would we? The league would be on suicide watch if all of the Hart, Lindsay, Norris, and Selke were won by Penguin players.

Jacob 03-11-2013 08:53 AM

Dude doesn't even kill penalties or play center.

wej20 03-11-2013 09:09 AM

Can't win the Selke if you hardly ever PK.

UnrealMachine 03-11-2013 09:44 AM

I would think that Sutter should get some (strong) consideration for the Selke. He is somewhere in between shutdown and shutout center.

:sarcasm: :sarcasm:

But yes obviously we know that anything is possible if your playing with a guy like Sid, but I just can't see the Koon outscoring Stamkos for the Rocket.

Hopefully I'll be proven wrong. :D

plaidchuck 03-11-2013 10:29 AM

Blasphemy! We all know no one should get it except Datsyuk, to suggest otherwise is just insanity.

cheesedanish87 03-11-2013 11:00 AM

What about Kunitz for the hart trophy? If he ends up in top 3 in goals and points he should be candidate with Sid and Stamkos

Bengui 03-11-2013 11:08 AM

Like someone said earlier, Kunitz's defensive strength is in breaking the enemy's cycle and transitioning from defense to offense quickly and consistently. While this does make him an efficient defensive forward, the things that Selke voter look for are shot blocking, clear takeaways, especially in the neutral zone, penalty killing and plus/minus, and Kunitz only stands out in one of these four aspects.
Quality of opposition, too. Forgot that. He doesn't get defensive zone starts against tough opponents.

No. Just no. Not even close yet, and he shouldn't be.

Til the End of Time 03-11-2013 11:20 AM

kunitz deserves the selke as much as letang deserves the norris.

Hey now no need to blame Letang that the Norris trophy now just goes to the highest scoring dman.

alcanalz 03-11-2013 11:27 AM

No..

Then you apparently are unfamiliar with defensive statistics:

Brandon Sutter 2013 season:

Corsi Quality of Competition = 0.374 (leads team)
Relative Corsi Quality of Competition = 1.726 (leads team)
GAA/60 = 1.73 (leads team)

Jordan Staal when he was last nominated for the Selke (09-10):

Corsi Quality of Competition = 0.345 (did not lead team)
Relative Corsi Quality of Competition = 0.903
GAA/60 = 2.16 (did not lead team)

Teams that are as bad defensively as we are don't get Selke consideration, and I'm fine with that.

Saku Koivu would get my vote this year. He's been Anaheim's best player most nights.
