Oilers Interested in Drew Stafford

oil has certainly watched stafford in buff, but while they could use his 6'2", 214 lbs, he's left NHL scouts wanting much more from him.

Possible trade scenario:Hemsky for Stafford. Hemsky 29, Stafford 27. Hemsky 1 yr left $5 mil, Stafford 2 yrs at $4 mil. Both RW.
Not sure I'd want Stafford on the Oilers, and not sure I'd be happy with dealing Hemsky. That said, big guys with skill like Stafford aren't easy to find, so maybe I could be won over. It would be an interesting deal, for sure, but would run somewhat contrary to Buffalo's gameplan of getting tougher/harder to play against.

Captain Hook 03-11-2013 09:10 PM

Interesting if that move were to happen.

rockinghockey 03-11-2013 09:12 PM

I know that we want to get bigger but unless Stafford can play on the LW no thank you. We have Yak that will take over on 2nd rw. Plus Hemsky is having a good year and is healthy and is playing a lot better than Stafford. I would rather trade Hemsky even if it is for picks and prospects as we can bundle those together for a player that we really need. Either size on the RW, big centreman or top 3 dman.

I could see Stafford being dealt. Gotta think a change of scenery would do him a world of good.

Brooklanders* 03-11-2013 09:15 PM

Stafford could use the change and Oilers the size but not at the price of Hemsky. Hemsky is the better player

Draiskull 03-11-2013 09:15 PM

Can he play the left side?

belair 03-11-2013 09:16 PM

That deal has Lupul>Pitkanen>Cole>O'Sullivan>Vandermeer> :badidea: written all over it.

Why would the Sabres do this?

Because they are winning the trade?

Why does Edmonton do this...we need size, but it should be on the left wing, or on the top 4 of our blue line. Yakupov will be our 2nd line rw going forward and is the only reason Hemsky is available at all I think.

I agree, unless Stafford can play LW no thank you and for Hemsky BUF has to add. I would be more interested in Foligno.

Foligno would be a great addition.

Nalens Oga 03-11-2013 09:26 PM

Why would Edmonton want to get another winger? They could dump a bit of salary by trading him for Hemsky but it's only a $1 M difference and Hemsky's better when healthy.

Stafford might have size but he doesn't play big. Their best bet is to trade for a big prospect like the Canucks did with Kassian.

5cupstandard 03-11-2013 09:27 PM

Caley you are on fire with all these threads this evening!!! Found the Rampage one quite amusing...

thefifagod 03-11-2013 09:31 PM

I can't see the Sabres doing this unless they simply want to add a shorter term contract. I'd look for the Sabres to add to their young core in a trade of Stafford, be it picks or prospects, instead of someone like Hemsky.

Aceboogie 03-11-2013 09:31 PM

Heard this to. Hemsky would be the only guy that would make sense, dont need another RW, does stafford play a physical game with some defensive ability?

All teams want to do packages for a better piece. We'd hope the same for Hemsky, but if we need to do a 1 for 1, that's fine, as long as it isn't Stafford, simply because we don't need him.

The only reason Buffalo might hesitate is if they don't want to add the extra 1M in cap with the cap coming down...but otherwise I see no reason why the Sabres would turn it down.

pigpen65 03-11-2013 09:35 PM

Stafford's practical size is 4'2"

BackGroundMusic 03-11-2013 09:44 PM

If Buffalo is dealing guys, it's for futures, not for rentals. This makes no sense.

Aceonfire* 03-11-2013 09:46 PM

This rumor has been around for a long time. Both players only seem to play half a game at a time. One has size and the other creates plays.

Have no fear. You're unlikely to get Hemsky anyway.

La Cosa Nostra 03-11-2013 11:34 PM

Trade Stafford for an impending UFA the season we are trying to tank. Mm no.
