What do you want to see the rest of the season?

Twenty one games remaining, nine points up on the Devils in the standings. As they say, we are playing with house money at this point. So what would you have the Pens do with these final twenty one games?

Go for the president's trophy? Seven points down that seems like a stretch absent something dramtic.

Focus on getting Crosby, Kunitz and Letang some hardware?

Give some time to some talent in the minors like Morrow?

Tinker with the lines and system to adjust to the type of trapping game we may see in the playoffs?

Make a major trade.

Stand pat?

Just play out the year as we have been?

The Pens do have some opportunity to tinker given this lead. Think that they may or even should?

MrBurghundy 03-13-2013 08:47 PM

1st seed. Something they haven't done in the Crosby/Malkin era yet.

Also a major trade. There is no reason why we can't be even more dominant on offense. We have the cap space, the trade assets, and hopefully the desire (since Shero wanted Parise this summer) to get it done.

Finally a huge overhaul of the bottom 6. Anybody not named Sutter or Vitale can **** off. I don't really know what to do with Jeffrey though. I'd think he'd be used in a trade.

plaidchuck 03-13-2013 08:50 PM

A shorthanded goal. A shutdown and dangerous PK.

JimmyTwoTimes 03-13-2013 08:51 PM

Get a first round bye.

No, I still think they make a solid trade, going for it this year. Your 4th option would obviously be nice, but doubt it happens.

wgknestrick 03-13-2013 09:01 PM

Glass to be "visible"

......on the trade charts:nod:

bathroomSTAAL 03-13-2013 09:17 PM

On topic, I want to see Kennedy and Glass on another team or even better, in the AHL. I know we have other problems but my problems with these guys are personal. They know what they did.

chethejet 03-13-2013 09:25 PM

I was in jest but point taken. let me rephrase, Flyers lose every game and Pens win the cup.

ColePens 03-13-2013 09:25 PM

Don't care for stats or hardware outside of the Cup. I'll go off the board with a few:

1) Health. I think it's fair to just simply ask for this team to stay healthy. I just want to see the team healthy.

2) Schematic changes. Did you see how good that 2-3 was with an F3 high against Boston? Hell yes.

3) Trust in rookies. Speaks for itself.

cheesedanish87 03-13-2013 09:52 PM

Everything cole said and better overall defense which i think they have been doing a better job of lately after the 1st period of flyers game. We obv need to get the PK going and I really wanna see TV play solid. We all know your not going anywhere with bad goal tending i just dont feel great putting our season on MAF i wanna have another option if MAF blows up.

Darth Vitale 03-13-2013 10:25 PM

A new troop of Asian Pens Cheerleaders.

Actually want the Flyers to finish 9th in the conference. Lose a chance to compete for the Cup by say 2 points, and still have virtually no shot at an early lottery pick. :thumbu:

We should be all about correcting obvious systems related mistakes/issues in order to be as set for the playoffs as possible.

Aggressive forecheck. For the third year running, I am on board the Cole Train as regards our forecheck. There was no reason to get away from the 2-3, and against Boston they showed us (and more importantly themselves) what it can do once again. I understand that it is a draining system to pull off for a full season, but you can't just start trying it in the playoffs, because it takes a lot of coordination to have the D and forwards stay coherent while pressuring like that, and we don't want to be open like a sieve to anyone with a half decent breakout.

Breakout variations. Additionally, as was also pointed out by MontrealPensFan yesterday in this context, after the stretch pass/break out was getting soaked up by Boston in the first period, we went back to having C's coming back for the puck or having our well skating D-men bring it up - in both cases WITH SUPPORT and to great effect.
Stretch passes were utilized still of course, but with much more purpose; ie. when there was actually an open forward to hit with it, or when there was no other outlet available.
This is what I have been screaming for in more than half the post game threads this year. Because variation is key and more so this is utilizing the best assets we have which is our puck carrying D and C's. No one would be liberated more with that strategy than Geno, and I cannot wait to see him back healthy with Neal and Beau.

Penalty Kill.
Then, what absolutely must happen is tinkering with the PK. We were never good at clearing the crease, but it seemed like at some point last season we completely stopped, because a few long range shots went past Fleury as he was getting screened by our own defenders. Annoying as that is, you cannot just give up the crease! Its the classic case of dealing with a sore thumb by cutting off the hand.
People here can ***** about Orpik (and all the other PK'ing D-men if they were fair) leaving people alone in front, but it is BY DESIGN. It is a system problem.
I also dislike the lack of aggression on the PK as regards the forwards, but some of that is also because Adams and Glass (and now Cooke) don't have the foot speed. Other than Dupuis and Sutter, we don't seem dangerous at all going the other way.

Protect the net.
The well worked 0-2 goal from Seguin was another picture perfect example of how opponents for more than a year have profited from both our D-men chasing behind our net simultaneously. Either we get that to work by having the forwards actually take up their men going to the net, or we become more cautious and make sure that one D-man will guard the front of the net, when opponents are pinning us in our own zone. I prefer the latter, because we don't have a Phoenix group of forwards where everyone thinks defense first.

These are the most important things for Bylsma to keep working on, and if he can please play Despres with Letang for at least three games straight - full time - then I think we also have our top4 D settled ES. But compared to the systems related issues, that is a detail.

Darth Vitale 03-13-2013 10:28 PM

Even better:

Philly sells off two 1st rounders a good prospect and roster player for Luongo and they still lose in the first round on account of bad goaltending. Would be epic.

alcanalz 03-13-2013 11:23 PM

1) Tighten up defensively, especially the PK.
2) Go in to the playoffs hot.
3) Go in to the playoffs healthy.
4) Get MAF some rest down the stretch so he's good to go. He's been good so far this year despite what his numbers say, but if he can be great going in... that would be terrific.
5) Sid continue to beast mode.
6) Play more in-your-face like when we won the cup. Get in on that forecheck hard and punish people, activate the D, play some penguin hockey. Whether that necessitates getting rid of a couple guys (cough TK), so be it.

I'm nearly certain that if we take the first seed, the Flyers will be in the 8th seed :P. It's just destiny.

Mo Wanchuk 03-13-2013 11:32 PM

I'd love to see Fleury get a shutout.

#66 03-13-2013 11:55 PM

Do some clean up in the deffensive zone and get better around around the cage.

I like the break out that Tender and MPF explained but I would also like to see a reverse or a double reverse used at times. There should be 4 or 5 different ways to break out using the lure of a stretch pass first.

Work in Bennett on the PP against teams that are known for a passive PK.

These, especially #2 and #3. Shero talking about having cap space after the Staal and Michalek deals means zero if he simply sits on it. The whole point of having that space was his way of saying "now we can spend on talent we couldn't have in the past".

And the bottom six could do with an influx of more size/physicality, plus a sprinkle of more offense from that God-awful 4th line of redundancy.

I'd also like to see the Pens try and earn Sid and the boys some hardware, but I think that will come naturally without any extra effort if the two above things are taken care of.

One additional thing to the above, I'd like to see the Pens play much more consistent defensively. Periods 2 and 3 against the Bruins is a start. But if this team could ever play the kind of defense where 2 goal leads are close to a guaranteed 2 points, I'd feel much more confident about their chances in the playoffs.

I agree about the overhaul on the bottom 6 but I would add Cooke to that list with Vitale and Sutter. Cooke is a significant part of our team and should go nowhere. He's part of the solution, not part of the problem. And I think Adams can be an asset on our PK and should stick as the 12th forward. However, I do think, especially come playoff time, we need to start double-shifting one of Sid/Geno with our 4th line more. (though I would like to see Adams spot upgraded in the summer)

Regarding Jeffrey, I agree: he can either be part of the solution on the 4th line (replace Glass to bring more offense to that line), or be used as part of a trade. So one way or another, I think he can be a useful asset in that regard.

Regarding a "major" trade, I am totally open to it as long as we don't overpay. Shero needs to set his price and be disciplined. At the same time, if it's only a 3rd liner swap (i.e. bring in a Kulemin to replace Kennedy as 3rd line RW, or play with Sid and bump Dupers down to 3rd line), along with what I said above about the 4th, then I think that would be perfectly adequate.

I've said this before: I do think a small move (upgrading TK + Glass) is required, but our problems have more to do with execution. If we can execute better, play better team defense and PK, and stay healthy, then I think we have as good a chance as anyone in the east. Even trading for Iginla or Perry wouldn't guarantee anything, so I don't want to overpay or sell the farm for a rental.

Came here to post exactly this. There is absolutely no reason guys like Despres should be out of the lineup at this point (other than injury of course). I'd also like to see Bort get a shot in the lineup sometime soon. He struggled in the last few games he played before we benched him and I'd like to see him get some confidence back.

Pancakes 03-14-2013 02:05 AM

I want a top three seed. I'm sick of finishing 4th or 5th and getting a really tough matchup in the first round.

Although looking at the standings the three teams at 6 7 and 8 are all bad matchups imo. Rangers have a lot of talent and Lundqvist, Devils play us so tough, and for some reason the Leafs have also played us real tough this year.

If we get a top-seed..... as looks more than likely.... anyone but the Devils.

Ziggyjoe21 03-14-2013 07:38 AM

1) Despres and/or Niskanen prove they are legit top 4 Dman capable of playing big minutes with Letang in the playoffs. This also eliminates the need to overpay for D at the deadline.

2) Bring in a RW. Doesn't matter if it's a scoring winger or 3rd liner. If it's someone like Iginla he'll just bump Dupuis to the 3rd line, which would kill 2 birds with one stone. Even if it's merely a 3rd liner like Ott, it would still improve our 3rd line tremendously witout breaking up Sid's line which is tearing it up.

3) Competent 4th line. Seriously, 4th liners are a dime a dozen. We got Adams off of waivers, it shouldn't be hard to acquire players with no talent who work hard and play D. There has to be dozens of players in the AHL that would be an improvement over what we have.

Le Magnifique 66 03-14-2013 07:44 AM

I'd like to see a move being made by Shero but targeting players that are still under contract and that we can move forward with

Better all around defensive game and bring back the Pens physicality from years ago on the blue line, these guys need to start hitting

Fleury needs to be reliable, he has been way too shaky in the last 3 seasons. Time for him to step it up

That's why I was rooting for the Devils to win. I'd love to see a Montreal/Boston (mostlikely Montreal) vs. NJ in a 4/5. Get those 2 out of the way.

SirBrad 03-14-2013 08:05 AM

I'd like to see them improve from 22nd in GA and 25th in PK%. Those are pitiful numbers.
