OT: Is Edmonton a Hockey or Football Town?

As the title states, are the Oilers the main draw here or are the Eskimos just as popular? I mean in terms of fan passion, attention from the media, etc. If your a Oilers ticket holder, wouldn't you consider dumping your tickets after the fiasco that has occurred the last few years? Just always been on my mind and my cousin thinks deep down the Eskimos are the most popular team. I tend to disagree however.

Tad Mikowsky 03-17-2013 07:37 PM

Nah, Oilers take top rank here.

Petro Points 03-17-2013 07:40 PM

not even close..

Esks are way ahead of Oilkings due to history but not even close to the Oilers despite the suckage..

PDO 03-17-2013 07:46 PM

Oilers. Not even close.

Macciocia and Tillspin certainly didn't help.

Question for any STH's out their, will you be renewing your tickets?

timekeep 03-17-2013 07:49 PM

Like most Canadian towns, if not all, hockey is first.

after going through 5 yrs of suckage.. Oilers will have no issues selling tickets no that the team us on upswing... too much accumulated skill to not have fans lining up for season tickets.

IBleedOil247 03-17-2013 08:10 PM

Not even close. Even during offseason, sports radio struggles talking about football and 90% of the airtime revolves around "next year" for the Oilers

MoneyGuy 03-17-2013 08:15 PM

The Esk are my favourite team and the CFL my favourite sport but the Oilers are number 1. It's not even close.

RisingSun 03-17-2013 08:19 PM

hockey. local youth don't even idolize the Esks.

Hugo Stiglitz 03-17-2013 08:24 PM

Definitely hockey by far. When was the last time you saw an Esks fan wearing an Esks jersey not on a game day?

Perfect_Drug 03-17-2013 08:28 PM

Can't even name a single Eskimo.

Not that it matters on entertainment value, but they make roughly median household salary of Albertans.

:/

Even a large portion of the 20-35 age population could care less about the CFL. I have a lot of friends that follow the NFL religiously, but don't follow the CFL.

I'm not a football guy, so I can't comment on why.

 I thought I would be the only one. I remember Ricky Ray but that's about it. Oilers are hands down, absolutely #1 and it's not even slightly close!

Blue And Orange 03-17-2013 08:48 PM

Oilers are #1 and will always be #1 in EDM.

shoop 03-17-2013 08:49 PM

Oilers without a doubt.

I'm a big football fan, but NFL not CFL.

zeus3007* 03-17-2013 08:59 PM

Hockey and its not even close. The Esks have a decent following, but I'd bet almost all of them are also Oil fans.

Seedling 03-17-2013 10:37 PM

Yes.

Tyrolean 03-17-2013 10:44 PM

Although the Oilers are #1, the Eskimos get a lot of love because they are a mostly low paid blue collar type team. No high priced players so the team endures more to the everyday fans.

SephF 03-17-2013 10:45 PM

Oilers by far

Turrican* 03-17-2013 10:47 PM

Does a football player even have a street named after him? Gizmo Dr? Ricky Ray Way?

Brewster 03-17-2013 10:47 PM

You're asking a bit of a biased sample, but hockey AINEC.

The Perfect Human* 03-17-2013 10:51 PM

Oilers AINEC.

MessierII 03-17-2013 10:55 PM

Hockey first no doubt but Edmonton is great sports city in general.

The Last Dynasty 03-17-2013 10:58 PM

Oilers by a mile

there's no year-round "Esks Lunch" radio show and Trade deadline Day and UFA signing Day are bigger than most Esks games

and I enjoy Esks football

It also seems the Esks have fallen off the radar of alot of people in this town cause of the Maciocia/Tillman era...but maybe the younger sport fans is more and more NFL fans and less CFL fan
