Realignment and the playoffs

Now that teams are changing divisions and stuff do you think that the Vancouver Canucks will have a better shot at the Stanley Cup? Do you think more finals appearances will occur?

Who cares about changing divisions? I'm more interested in the stuff.

Stuff rules :yo:

We lost the Avalanche and the Wild, and gained the Ducks, Kings, Sharks and Coyotes. We lose that trade.

Conference wise, we lose the Red Wings and Blue Jackets, and gain the Jets. We win that trade.

Top 3 of each division, and top 8 out of 14 make the playoffs. We dropped the Red Wings, who make it every season, and have one less team overall. It will no doubt be easier to snag those final two wild card spots and make the playoffs.

Granted, matchups would be different, but if the re-alignment was in place this season we'd have;

Chicago
St Louis
Minnesota

Anaheim
LA
Vancouver

Wild Cards
(Detroit) Gone to east
San Jose
Phoenix

Last season would've been much, much easier for the Canucks under the new format. It would've been:

VAN vs. CGY
PHX vs. SJS

STL vs. LAK
NSH vs. CHI

Though obviously there would've been different standings with the new formats and switched teams. Still, that would've been a lot nicer than facing the Kings in the 1st round.

the new format could really benefit the first place team, as the 4th place team in a division could routinely be an easy out like calgary...however the 2-3 matchups could be alot tougher as conceivably you could have the top 3 teams in a conference sit in the same division
