Canucks at the Trade Deadline

What do we need as the top priorities?

Who is going to have to go to make it happen? Who is tradeable? Who should not be traded no matter what?

Lots of questions to be answered in the mean time. The rumor that Gillis was after Gaborik was interesting, not because it was very realistic, but because Gillis is obviously looking to make a big move and is kicking the tires.

Also, this is a great draft year- How much do we go for broke on trading picks? Or do we hold onto them?

Lots of questions to be answered in the next couple weeks! :)

Either go for broke and target Corey Perry, or sell and move Raymond and Higgins. I don't think this team should be wasting picks on guys like Goc or Hendricks when this team has way too many needs to be a legitimate contender this season. Do not want to turn into Calgary.

Nuckles 03-18-2013 10:17 AM

Needs:
- 3rd line center (preferably left handed)
- right handed top 6 d-man
- top 6 winger
- starting goalie :sarcasm:

An extreme version of how I feel. Don't mortgage the future to try and salvage this clusterfunk of a season.

LPH 03-18-2013 10:23 AM

Really hope we don't trade our first, or Kassian/Jensen, and if we do I really hope we don't trade those assets for a rental.

If we can get a good pick for Raymond I would do it, can't see him sticking around for decent money. If people are willing to overpay for guys like Raymond/Higgins/Lapierre, I would go for it, I just think there are going to be too many overpayments this TD because most teams are still in the running

Doubt Anaheim would move him to us though if we are making the playoffs. They will probably ship him out east.

But we need to somehow grab him in the offseason

CP 03-18-2013 10:24 AM

Needs:
- 2nd line center (who can drop to third line when Kesler returns)
- 3rd line center (who can drop to fourth line when Kesler returns)
- 4th line center (who can be a injury reserve when Kesler returns)
- right handed top 6 d-man (Salo? Schultz?)

Barney Gumble 03-18-2013 10:32 AM

Until the vets on the team starting playing with any kind of effort (and consistantly); pointless to add players now.

Agreed.

crazycanuck 03-18-2013 10:57 AM

A Center who can play 3rd line minutes but you can't just have him being a defensive specialist, with Kesler inconsistancy and inability to stay healthy, getting a defensive specialist is useless and won't do anything to help this team. We had hoped that Schroeder could've been this but he's not getting the job done and Ebbett isn't good enough either, while he is playing well now, it won't last

A RH top 4 D. As much as I like Tanev he's not a top 4 D at this point and Edler needs a true stay at home physical defenseman who can cover for Edler when he pushes the pace. Edler is closer to Ehrhoff of 2011 than Edler of 2011.

The problem with the Canucks this season is that there are too many players playing in roles that they are unable to play at the level the Canucks need consistantly. Whether this is out of position or playing higher in the lineup than they should be. Filling the two above spots will help push players back to their natural positions and correct roles within the roster.

I found it interesting because a move like that would almost certainly require trading away a key part of the core - and I'm curious who would that be.

I would have to assume that the Rangers would want Kassian/Jensen + 1st as a base for the deal.

Reign Nateo 03-18-2013 11:23 AM

I'd be pretty wary if I was the Canucks about trading Kassian/Jensen/1sts at this deadline. This team seems a further away from contending than just a Marian Gaborik to me.

Canucks need a Center, unless Gaborik can do that he's not the answer. If Schroeder had taken the next step and was looking like a player the Canucks could rely on to play 3rd line minutes than Gaborik would be a good player to look at, but with the lack of depth up the middle that is plaguing the Canucks this year, I'd be very wary to trade for Gaborik unless a Center is acquired first.

I agree, and if we can get really good value for some of our upcoming FAs and older players then I would go for it. Just smart asset management to try to sell high and buy low

No way in hell would I move Kassian + our 1st for a soft, injury prone winger making $1.4 mil more than the Sedins.

Just A Bit Outside 03-18-2013 11:31 AM

How this team plays the next two weeks will have a huge impact (Thanks Captain Obvious).

TBH, if the team is still where it is now in terms of health and play, I'd rather just try and acquire assets (i.e. picks and young players) and ship off some fringe/dead-weight players.

There is no way this team as it currently stands has a shot in the playoffs based on play and health.

I'd rather just go for broke next year.

and I doubt the Rangers move a 40 goal scorer for an inconsistent prospect with second line upside and a late first.

it doesn't make sense for either team imo

Bingo.
These teams are not good trading partners.

Canucks cannot afford his cap hit next season + don't have a deep prospect pool.

Verviticus 03-18-2013 11:52 AM

We need a new mascot too, Fin just isn't the same guy he used to be.

Prospects and picks.

Virtanen2Horvat 03-18-2013 01:05 PM

This is what we need.

-2nd line winger that can score (Higgins-Kesler-???)
-3rd line Center
-Right handed defenseman.
-New coach (If nothing improves)
