Definitely could use a smart top 4 d-man(a good shutdown guy)

I think we are extremely well off in terms of Offensive d-men, Not counting Phaneuf(we'll say he's our best two-way guy) we have Rielly, Gardiner and Franson.

But in terms of Shutdown d-men, Fraser is really our only top guy in that area, Gunnar is decent as well but we need one more impact top 4 guy.

And then we need a #1 C, Stastny would still be high on my list, any upgrade over bozak would be good.

Edited the title just slighty :P

St Louis GM Doug Armstrong is at the Buff-Toronto game tonight after watching Leafs last night. Is he here to see Leafs or Sabres players?

st louis again

I wonder what it would cost to get a guy like Kevin Klein. He's a top 4 RHD, 28 years old. Nothing spectacular, but an upgrade over a guy like Kostka.

TBH I'd be fine with Stas if we can land him for Mac + Gunnar. Really that's the benchmark for any deal we're talking about here. Once we do that, we can flip Bozak for a 1st, or Grabo to Chicago, Vancouver or Washington.

I believe we've also been scouting St Louis pretty heavily.

Ian Cole would be an interesting target. Too but he's left handed, we have plenty of those. I cant see many of their roster players being expendable. Maybe a larger trade for Stewart. Be's been inconsistent there, is having a good year, and will command a big raise this summer (along with several other key players).

Otherwise. id say futures. Rattie, Shwartz, or picks could be a target.

Leaf Rocket 03-21-2013 05:47 PM

I think it'll be for elliot. or schwartz hopefully?

He'd be a solid 1b kind of #1 C, very capable of making smart plays(similar to what Kadri does I'd say). He's also solid at faceoffs.

Bozak is an offensive black hole who is not a playmaker at all, he makes some DECENT plays but reminds of everything that a 3rd line C is, okay at defense, good at faceoffs, okay at offense. Badly need an upgrade there.

Then we need a top 4 dman because we are making some stupid plays on defense.

After we do that we can finally judge our goaltending i'd say, can't blame the goalie THAT much if we're leaving him out to dry, although the goaltending has been pretty average lately.

I dont think Elliot has a ton of value. He's had one good year, under a Hitchcock system that included a borderline Norris candidate and a Selke nominee. I dont have much faith in his longterm consistency as a #1 goalie on a standard non Hitchcock team.

jake allen is rockin
2.26 .915 8-2-0

we could elliot and send scrivens back to the marlies

Good point made here - our tending has just been as good as the players in front of him. They keep us in the game when our players are playing, but we have to play to keep the puck out of our net.

It's astounding how many goals we let in once we stop staking for periods of time; the final 8 minutes in Tampa, 18 minutes of the 2nd period against Winnipeg, the 3rd period against Pittsburgh... I could keep going.

Am I wrong in thinking that maybe the reason why Elliot's numbers were so good was because St Louis was at least putting in more complete games last year? Or is he actually that wretched so far this year? Unless he's basically free, I'm not at all sold on him over Reim/Scrivens.

Could it be for sobotka? or a younger prospect?

From what St. Louis fans say, Hitchcock LOVES Sobotka, so I doubt he gets moved.

They do have some good young prospects though. Tarasenko and Allen are obviously unavailable. But I think bother Shwartz and Rattie could be had. St. Louis has a pretty solid core, and are probably looking to take the next step and be considered among the legit contenders. They might be willing to move one of those guys for instant help.

Hopefully not Elliot, don't want to give up a roster player for how he's played so far. It's a dream but Stewart would be amazing.

Scrivens required to go through Waivers if I recall correctly.

If a goalie is coming in, Ben would be going the other way unfortunately.

I don't see Elliot as much of an upgrade over Ben this season. Brian Elliot has had a down season and that wouldn't be a risk I would take in terms of a one for one swap.

But if it were a package deal with St.Louis then it would be something to consider.

coachbob 03-21-2013 07:50 PM

Its pretty clear....
Leafs' best years since 67 were when they had great goaltending. Joseph and Belfour.
Its time to end the James Reimer experiment. He's a nice kid who is hard to dislike, but he will not be an elite stopper.
Send Bozak and Reimer to Vancouver for Luongo. That deal really means Bozak and Reimer for Luongo and Colborne.
Kadri, Grabo, Colborne, Mclement.

Didact 03-21-2013 07:51 PM

Leafs should add no.1 goalie to their list.

If we could get Schwartz for Kulemin I'd be ecstatic.

Safe to say it's already on their list. Both Reimer and Scrivens need sheltered minutes to develop.... won't get that here.
