What happened, he didn't look that bad with the panthers? Seems kinda weird to retire in the middle of the season while he is still under contract.

Anyway great career and one of the best danglers in the game.

Tyler Durden 03-21-2013 06:13 PM

I really don't know why Tallon signed him. I'd rather have Samsonov or Wolski on the Panthers than him.

DL44 03-21-2013 06:14 PM

Poor Florida...

How many players in way or another have packed up and gone home now?

Kovy... congrats on the great career.. Always cheered for the guy to do well while people piled on... Easy to do as a fan of a west coast team i guess..

Crafton 03-21-2013 06:15 PM

in before he gets trashed for his compete level.

bon voyage Kovy. we had some rad times together.

Shrimper 03-21-2013 06:16 PM

Not surprised. He hasn't been able to compete for the last year or two so at a competent enough level for the NHL - can't comment for the KHL. I hope the Penguins invite him to the next home game as an honour guest. He was a huge part of our franchise and I'd like to think they'd do something to thank him.

caley 03-21-2013 06:17 PM

Richards went on to say he was expecting an announcement from him this week with Florida playing Kovalev's first team, the Rangers, but instead Kovalev just quietly retired during the week.

Started off with a bang, then didn't do much thereafter. Was a healthy scratch recently and the team basically told him he wouldn't be with the team anymore. I suspect he called around to see if anyone had interest and when they didn't, decided to shut it down.

For the record
1,316 Games - 430 Goals - 599 Assists - 1029 points along with 100 career points in 123 career playoff games.

SoupyFIN 03-21-2013 06:19 PM

1st game was good, then meh 2nd line minutes games before Shore replaced him and that was followed by a total disaster when Dineen tried to play him with 3rd/4th line which really isn't his thing.

Beville 03-21-2013 06:24 PM

He should've retired instead of joining Ottawa...

MaxChart 03-21-2013 06:25 PM

Bonne retraite Kovy!

Booba 03-21-2013 06:25 PM

Not sure why he didn't wait until the end of the season to announce it? Is he still going to collect his last paychecks?

Good career, but everyone knows it could've been great.

Happy trails, Alex.

Homeland Security 03-21-2013 06:26 PM

Enjoy retirement!

Hmm, we were just discussing his skillfulness and stickhandling abilities in another thread. As a tribute to his career, here are his top ten goals circa. 2007, compiled by RDS:

A montage by HFBoards' own Hockeysemin:

A neat skills demonstration (still doesn't do his skill justice though) in a Warrior Hockey tutorial video:

Here's Kovalev playing keep away against three players. Not sure which show this is from:

Kovalev carried the Habs to the best regular season record in nearly two decades. Finished 11th in league scoring at 35 years old. I'll never undermine how important he was for us, how fun he was to watch, and what kind of impact he could bring to a team when he really wanted to.

Burgs 03-21-2013 06:42 PM

Happy retirement, Kovy!

Kovy was great off the ice here and just the fact he drove Don Brennan and the local media insane makes me want to erect a statue in his honour, that's priceless stuff right there.

Great talent, maybe some of the best hands I've seen. All the best Alexei.

Laus723 03-21-2013 06:45 PM

Great first game, then nothing. Was given a chance, just didn't capitalize.

Happy retirement.

JayKing 03-21-2013 06:46 PM

Great player. Should've retired way back though.

vippe 03-21-2013 06:52 PM

You had a good one! One of my favorites.

A young Kovalev after winning the Stanley Cup in 1994:

ShootIt 03-21-2013 07:03 PM

I guess Tallon waterboarded him to force an early retirement. :sarcasm:

Last I heard he didn't want to retire due to $$ reasons.

iPunch 03-21-2013 07:03 PM

Not a fan of pulling the chute on his team before the season ended.

Rscorpio 03-21-2013 07:04 PM
