Ranking the top NHL Coaches, as of the 22nd of March 2013. Vote for who you think the best coach is in each poll. Each poll will be open for... well, we'll see. First one will be two days.

Coaches taken from here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NHL_coaches

Trafalgar Law 03-22-2013 10:35 AM

Ralph Krueger should be 2nd last, just barely ahead of Joe Sacco.

Trance Kuja 03-22-2013 10:47 AM

I voted for Walrein.

FinHockey 03-22-2013 10:53 AM

Homer vote for Joe Sacco.

DKQ 03-22-2013 10:59 AM

Dat stache.

SoftEuro4thLiner 03-22-2013 11:21 AM

:walrus: takes this one. Tippett, Boudreau, Quenneville, Julien, Hitchcock and - of course - Joe ****ing Sacco after him. I'm not sure in which order yet.

Flow 03-22-2013 01:42 PM

Mr Joe Sacco

MastuhNinks 03-22-2013 01:47 PM

MacLean

He played to Ottawa's strengths perfectly last year, giving the team a more offensive focus which lead to them going from 29th to 4th best offense. Now this year his offensive firepower is limited, and he has the team playing a more conservative defensive game with back-up goaltenders in net, and he's successful at that too. He's also a coach that gets 100% out of his guys which is always a great quality.

Anth93 03-22-2013 02:13 PM

Carlyle should be in the bottom 10. Just making that clear now. He's an awful hockey coach.

I went with Boudreau.

Erik Alfredsson 03-22-2013 02:37 PM

For once the guy in Ottawa, MacLean.

InjuredChoker 03-22-2013 02:38 PM

Babcock is rear talent in coaching department.

Not many other can see the offensive talent of Dan Cleary or Justin Abdelkader who he has consistently played on a top 6 role with pp time.

OmniSens 03-22-2013 02:39 PM

Tough here. I give Babcock the slight edge over MacLean

edit: Didn't know MacLean was getting so much love :amazed: Glad he's our coach

This guy

Machinehead 03-22-2013 02:43 PM

Also, if Tortorella finishes any higher than 25th those responsible will be getting a plague of frogs.

eklunds source 03-22-2013 03:07 PM

"What have you done for me lately?"

Buckets and Gloves 03-22-2013 03:13 PM

Less than 17% voted for Babcock???... really HF

The Nose 03-22-2013 03:13 PM

Babcock doesn't deserve being in the top 20 if we're just going on the past couple years. But his career credentials will out him at the top.

Leafs at Knight 03-22-2013 03:56 PM

Am I missing something with Joe Sacco coaching his team to last in the west ?

Orr123 03-22-2013 04:05 PM

I homer voted MacLean.

Last year he took a team predicted to be 15th in the East, to a playoff spot.

This year he's taken a team that has lost virtually ALL its star power and players and continued to make them competitive and not lose a step in the standings.

The major reasons I picked MacLean over some of the other coaches is because of a few things.

1) His stache
2) I'm a Homer
3) The real reason I chose him, is because I can't imagine any other team not falling, even slightly, in the standings after losing their #1 C, #1 W, #1 G, #1 D and a handful of other players.

Maclean is great (love the guy), but you can't judge a coach by 2 years... hence my argument for Babcock.

Coaching is something where past accomplishes matter more than a year to year thing with players.

Players rely on their bodies which deterioate, coaches rely on their minds.

I was ranking it as current. Who is the best coach now. Which I misread the question.

But I still stick by it, experience or not. He's been assistant coach along side some of the best, and has always had a great track record regardless of where he has coached -- even if not in a head coach position or in the NHL.

Billy Mays Here 03-22-2013 04:25 PM

Between Tippett, Trotz, Quenneville and Julien for me. Need to see a little more of Maclean before I vote him in the top five.

Voted Sacco for the lulz though.

PeterForsberg 03-22-2013 04:37 PM

Why in the hell is Sacco 1st? He shouldn't even be on that list.

I get that. I'm not saying Babcock isn't a great long-time coach. And has done well with injury to his own team. But I still don't see any other coach in the NHL doing what MacLean has this year. Its un-freaking-believable.

Babcock is great, no denying that. But I wouldn't take him over MacLean right now for the Sens. (this isn't a knock to babcock, but MacLean just fits in Ottawa... and has done incredibly well thus far).
