Travis Ewanyk Signed to 3-Year ELC

Per Twitter.

Ewanyk brings a lot of heart. As long as injuries don't derail him, I could see him as a 4th line forward that PKs and plays his bag off.

joestevens29 03-22-2013 11:03 AM

Great for the kid. Not sure if he's progressed as much as they would've hoped. Can he play for the Oil Kings next year?

You definitely grow to appreciate Ewanyk when you watch him play. His stats certainly don't tell the whole story.

I think that could be injury related, just missing time, but he's the kind of kid this team has been missing from the organiztion a Shift disturber.

8G -15A-23 PTS...on one of the best Jr. hockey teams in the country

am I missing something here?

Beerfish 03-22-2013 11:37 AM

Could be a useful pro. We have had some pretty suspect 2nd and 3rd rounders the last few years for drafting at the top of these rounds. He needs to stay healthy.

joestevens29 03-22-2013 11:41 AM

Honestly Mike Brown or Travis Ewanyk? I'm kinda glad we traded a pick for Brown.

CornKicker 03-22-2013 11:45 AM

im not sure why the oilers have a love affiar with oil kings is but i wasnt impressed with ewanyk or moroz when i saw them play. must be budget cuts in the scouting dept.

ewanyk is a heart type player but his skill level is mediocore at best.

Oilbleeder 03-22-2013 11:48 AM

I liked his potential coming out, but injuries have really hurt his development. Still think he can have a future in the NHL.

BTW, this is now contract #50 or is this a sliding on like Musil?

Still in Junior so this one slides as well.

It's different.

It's a "next year" contract. Doesn't start until July 1st.

He can sign an ATO to play with OKC/Stockton.

Dabomb 03-22-2013 11:58 AM

All I remember is that he had one hell of a period against Russia in that Team Canada Junior exhibition. He had great energy and was hitting everything before he got injured in that game.

Koto 03-22-2013 11:59 AM

i dont really get it.

contract slot for a player with the UPSIDE to be a 4th liner.

dont really need skill from players like him anyways.. As long he knows his role and is good at it he'll have a better shot than jack of all trade guys like Curtis Hamilton and Pitlick.. Too skilled to learn the grinding game of a bottom 6 player and therefore getting nowhere.

Byers, House and Vande Velde are impending UFAs.

Need some bodies in OKC.

Jimmi Jenkins 03-22-2013 12:14 PM

Yeah this signing clearly spells the end of VV

Groucho 03-22-2013 12:16 PM

I like Ewanyk. Heart and soul player, shift disturbor and he hits like a truck.
Type of player our bottom 6 will always need.

He is not a long shot at all. He will be a engery player for the Oilers within 3 years. Everyone that is complaining about this signing it obvious that they have not seen him play.
He is not there to score goals for us. He is a heart and soul player. He is a very good skater and can drive the puck to the net, but he finishing skills are not great. He can hit LIKE no tomorrow and is not scared to take on anyone. If you go too Oil kings games you will notice that if his team comes out flat he will go and try pick fights to get his team motivated. He is great in his own end one of the reason why the Oil Kings have a great PK. He also does well in the faceoff dot.
He is exactly what the Oilers are need right now. He also will most likely become a better and more reliable player than Mike Brown.

I love this signing and don't base your opinion on his stats go youtube some videos of him

Most posters from here live IN EDMONTON and always watch the WJC Exhibition. I've never been impressed with Ewanyk, seemed like they drafted the kid just because he plays for the Oil Kings (like Moroz).

We'll see I guess, I still think he's a long shot. Kids who play his style take a long time to translate their skills to the NHL unless they're huge kids like Kassian. Ewanyk is big at 6'2 190 but he's not exactly a monster.

Regardless, congrats to him on his ELC. Hopefully he continues progressing.

Doesn't mean if you live in Edmonton that you have watched the Oil Kings. What WJC exhibition are you talking about? I can not seem to remember him playing in one.

They drafted him because he was 17 year old kid playing a shutdown role against the other teams top line, and also he hits, fights and does whatever it takes to win the the game. Last season in E****y's first 21 games of the year the Oil Kings did not lose one game not saying it was all because of him, but is a very important player, but we are both allowed are own opinions :)

He played in the U-18 tournament. I'm not trying to dismiss his junior accomplishments I just think this style of player is a long shot when it comes to making the NHL. He could prove me wrong though and that wouldn't be a bad thing.

I hope he does, but I guess time well tell.

Oilfan2 03-22-2013 01:26 PM

Big whoop...Wake me up when they sign Danny DeKeyser ..

misfit 03-22-2013 01:36 PM

I still see him as a longshot to have an NHL career, but I think this organization will give him every opportunity to prove me wrong. Spurgeon was used as more of an offensive weapon with the Rockets than Ewanyk is with the OKs, but I see them as similar type of player in the pros. I just hope Ewanyk doesn't have the same issues with injuries (though he's already had one fairly big one).

Good for Travis to get his ELC. Can anyone tell me if he's still eligible for junior next year?
